I went to Julian Elementary from fifth grade onward, then, their Junior High and high school. Some…read moreteachers were definitely better than others. The ones that weren't as good were by no means bad people, but in high school I did notice some teachers favored the Advanced Placement students over the regular students. I had tried to enter an AP class for the first time in eleventh grade, and certain people tried to keep me out of them and tried to discourage me from taking them because I was in Special Ed and they didn't think I was smart enough to aim higher. If I had not taken AP I don't think I would have bridged my educational gaps as well as I did, so I'm glad I took the advanced class. We had some really good teachers too and I'll gladly call them by name. Mr. White ( the math teacher, now in Borrego) , Mr. Munson ( My English and U.S History teacher), Mrs. Kodimer ( the Art teacher). These were the teachers who seemed to believe in the students the most. I was a brat, and they held out for me anyway and considered my potential and ability to learn. I now hold a special place in my heart for these subjects. And just to address Anonymous A's post about Brian Duffy. She's wrong about them. It's so easy to debase someone's character on a Yelp review while giving no real descriptive evidence of their wrongdoings. I butt heads with Brian Duffy a couple of times, but that was because he was our principal and I was a brat. But never. NEVER. Did I ever think that man was a racist. He gave us no reason to think so. And as for Mr. Copeland, before he became the principal, he was my first teacher in the public school system back in '07. Funniest dude ever! His class was a lot of fun and he taught us how to build Boats and had cool parties in class and at Mission Bay. He also helped my mom and I rescue our horses during the Witch Fire when we had to evacuate by tying them to our cars and driving them out of the neighborhood when we had to evacuate. I had Mr. Copeland as a Junior High math teacher as well. Good guy. Definitely thinks of all his students as equals, he's just not a panderer or a kiss-ass. Which is good. We need more teachers/principals like him in the world. The school is like half Native American and Mexican anyway. Far from an "all white" school, and no, that's not what the staff/ teachers want it to be. I'm not sure what her grievance is with the busses, but I can assure you race was not a factor. - An Actual Former Student of the Julian Union School District Over and Out! Oh, one last thing! Mr. Martineau, if you're reading this, you're super awesome, and I have really fond memories of my sixth grade class because of you!

She was really flexible with my changing head count and just shared the minimum cost which was around $330. She had me choose what design I wanted to paint in advance too, which was easy! Review - I planned this for my birthday and I had such a fun time. Davina really walks you through the steps in an easy to understand way and shows you how to do each step on her own canvas. It was totally fun and doable for my friends who are not generally crafting people! The studio has great decorations and ambiance, Davina gave us glasses, glow in the dark hair clip, and a hat to take home with us. The final painting is so pretty and glows in the dark. Super recommend, especially for kids, families, friends. COVID - we didn't wear masks but you could wear masks. Davina shared she is vaxxed and boosted.

Students attend weekly meetings that include Hot Words (usually SAT prep), a family style dinner, a take home lesson, and tutoring by college students or other volunteers. RC also sends eligible students to UCSD over the summer to take courses for college credit, to a week-long summer camp to bond with other students, and helps seniors complete their college & scholarship applications... did I mention this is all for free? The students who I've met here are some of the most intelligent, friendly, and resilient high schoolers I know, and everyone on staff is wonderful. If you live in San Diego and you have a couple of free hours every week, definitely DEFINITELY check out this organization! Because education is a right, not a privilege - and you can help make one student's dream a reality!

Over the years, Reality Changers has proven that it is much more than a non-profit program. I have volunteered as a tutor and mentor since Spring of 2008 (back when I was still a student at UCSD) and it has been extremely rewarding seeing the students grow and mature into responsible citizens and adults. The weekly program consists of S.A.T. test preparation, an insightful lesson, a delicious homemade dinner (which is five stars for sure! not every volunteer gig you do feeds you!), and then 1.5 hours of study time. During this time, you are paired up with a small group of students which makes it easier to connect with the students. Reality Changers has even had inspiring guest speakers such as politicians, leaders in the San Diego community, and university officials. With the help of the supportive and encouraging staff and volunteers, these inner-city youth from San Diego become the first in their families to attend a four-year university.. and not only do they defy all statistics against them to get ACCEPTED, these students earn scholarships to go to schools such as Duke, Harvard, Dartmouth, USC, UCLA, and more. This truly shows how Reality Changers is more than just a program that helps high school students. It gives teens who never might have had the chance an opportunity of a lifetime and I am happy and blessed to be a part of it. It is amazing what a few hours a week can do to transform a student's life. This organization is unlike place I've ever volunteered at because they really make everyone who is a part of the program - whether you're a tutor, a parent, a volunteer, or a student feel like part of the RC Family. Also, tutors come from very diverse backgrounds - there are many college students (from UCSD, SDSU, PLNU, etc), professionals from the community, retired adults, and more who are all invested in helping inner city students from San Diego be the first in their families to go to college.

My daughter has been taking piano and voice over 2 years and has gone from being in the ensemble to getting the lead role in her last musical! They tailor the lessons to fit the needs of the student. They are great with kids, ex-professional performers (they know their stuff), and easy to work with (accommodating & flexible) - everything you want in a music teacher. My neighbor's daughter took lessons from American Music Academy on multiple instruments and is in the high school band as a freshman (rarely happens). My daughter, Maggie takes piano from Dave because she likes all the "young" music. Their team can teach you any style your heart desires. They are both very flexible with our crazy schedule, which I appreciate enormously! The convenience of having an at-home lesson is very rare today. They show up at our door on time, ready to teach with a huge smile. David is wonderful with my daughter. He has an uncanny ability to make her laugh and learn all at the same time. I would recommend American Music Academy to anyone who wants to learn music. Did I also mention - David is multi-talented - he plays many different instruments AND he also teaches vocals. Thanks for bringing music into our lives!
