My son was struggling in math and had fallen well behind due to an illness causing months of missed school as well as having ADHD. Upon my initial meeting with James, the director at Poway Mathnasium, he explained they would administer testing to find out what my sons weaknesses and gaps are so they can do two things- 1. Start off on a positive note by putting material in front of him that he could recognize and take on so he'd leave there feeling confidant and look forward to going back. 2. Set up realistic goals focusing on filling in the gaps and bringing him back up to grade level. This worked extremely well with my son and the change was noticeable after just the very first session. My son is not a math fan, but would get in the car and comment on how well he did and how much he enjoyed it. After several weeks he was already looking forward to his regular mathnasium days and seeing Jonathan and Samantha, his two favorite math techs. The reward system is a big plus.They also do homework checks and explain the work if needed. I recently graduated high school and I can honestly say that if mathnasium was not an option for me I probably would not have gotten accepted to UC Davis this fall. I've been coming here since my sophomore year of high school and the instructors (Samantha especially) took a lot of care to ensure that I learned the materials. Sometimes the instructors even knew my math teachers so they knew their teaching style and how to better help me in the classroom which was so helpful! My son joined Mathnasium 1 month ago and we are happy with the results thus far. The investment is well worth it. Mike was able to customize our agreement to suit our needs and budget. You do not have to sign up for 6 or 12 months if that arrangement is not within your budget. They will work with you. The staff is friendly, funny and attentive. I was surprised when my son said he really enjoys going as it can be a challenge to keep him engaged. I have 2 children at the Mathnasium in Poway who have different strengths and weaknesses but who are both very well looked after. We're so lucky to find a place like Mathnasium of Poway. Our daughter was struggling in math, so my wife or I would spend most school nights helping her on her homework, explaining concepts, and going over past quizzes. It's subject she used to enjoy, but gradually lost interest as the concepts became harder. However, once her school introduced Common Core, we were at a greater loss because it required a different approach to solving math. We enrolled our daughter in Mathnasium at the beginning of the summer. She took an assessment test which helped identify her areas for improvement. We would go about 4 days a week, so she could progress thru her personal binder of assignments. What we like are the friendly tutors and how they explain, coach, and encourage kids in a calm and open space. It's an inviting learning environment because even after kids finish their daily work, they are free to play with hands-on puzzles or play chess with a staff member, while they wait for parent to pick them up. However, what amazed us the most was seeing our daughter become more and more motivated. Mathnasium somehow rekindled her passion for math. As the school year begins, only time will tell how she performs, but she enters class with greater confidence and a better understanding of math. My 6th and 8th grade daughters have been attending the Poway Mathnasium for 1-1/2 years. Last year my older daughter's math teacher went on maternity leave at the beginning of the school year. The rest of the year was a series of substitute teachers. Needless to say, this was not a great year of math instruction. My daughter made up for this lack of consistent instruction by attending Poway's Mathnasium 2-3 times per week over the summer (in addition to regular attendance during the school year). Mathnasium reviewed and reinforced the 7th grade concepts. She started 8th grade with a much better handle on math. She recently took the MAPS testing and scored very well. I attribute her great test scores to (1) finally getting a decent math instructor at school; (2) Mathnasium reinforcing the concepts learned at school and helping with homework; and (3) increased confidence and skill level.
