Cheesey garlic bread
Libby B.

I really like this place. Came once on a Friday with coworkers and then by myself on a Tuesday night for dinner. I liked the salad I had at my first visit even though I forgot to say no olives! But really, I came back to try the cheesy garlic bread. Oh my goodness. The happy hour from 5-6 PM with $7 wine/beer can't be beat, and I just had myself some cheesy garlic bread and wine. Nothing beats that! I like that there are different levels of seating and the garden bar is particular nice if the weather cooperates. The layout is spacious too. Just go up to order your food, get a buzzer, and grab a drink from the bar while you wait on your food. I've heard great things about their burgers so if I get a chance, I'd like to try one of those before I leave town. They even have their own bottle shop next door which is really convenient (if pricey). They have different specials per day and trivia on Wednesday nights. I could see this being a nice hangout for locals.

I can understand why the Jubilee does particularly well. It's a pub that serves cheap booze and has a generous smoking section. It also serves food, but don't expect anything amazing. First date territory this is not. That's the thing about Jubilee - there's no fear of overwhelming expectations about the place; it just exists. That may sound like a negative thing, and for some businesses it is. But the Jubilee serves a purpose. It's a watering hole for the white and blue collar workers, a place they can eat a little something and bitch about the boss. Everything here is mediocre, from the outdoor settings, to the food and beer options right up to the internal fittings and decor. The food is just okay, the coverband is shit (subjectively speaking) and it's sometimes full of people you'd rather avoid. But it's here and it's close and it's cheap. I'd recommend that anyone seeing a show at the Tivoli should buy their drinks at the Jube, then go up to catch the show. It'll save you some sweet dough and probably be an excellent place to pre-game it, drinking wise.

Ahhhh The Jube. Where you can get cheap pots of Carlton Draught and a good steak that you can eat in the 'beer garden'. Where you get chips not on a plate, but served in a fancy cone. Where you can lazily listen to live music on a Sunday afternoon and where you can dance unashamedly. The Jube is the most casual venue I've ever been to but also enjoyed. It's not really your typical Valley scene and that's just as well, considering it's wisely perched just on the outskirts and right across from Limes. I used to absolutely LOVE this venue for a Sunday sesh. Cheap beer? Check. Huge, cheap feed? Check. Slightly bogan crowd? Check. Some decent music to have a sing and a dance to? Check mate. Mostly I used to love it here because friends of mine were charged with the musical responsibilities and I used to love coming to hear them play. But that's what The Jube is for: enjoying a lazy afternoon of music and drinks with friends. It's a good place for a cheeky drink and a casual hang with friends. Apparently they also do a great lunch and some Saturday night attractions. Who knew?

The Jube. I used to come here for a sneaky pint on my lunch break. It looked like a lot of other people did too. If you work in the Valley or in Bowen Hills, the Jube is the place to go for your liquid lunch. The bar staff even seem to expect a bunch of suits and tradies to come charging in from midday onwards and so they serve you quickly, so you can down your beer and get back to work. The Jubilee has a fantastic outdoor area. Smokers will be delighted that they have a large area where they can settle into a table with their beer and smoke away, rather than have to finish their drink and go out the front, down the street and be publicly shamed, because "no one smokes here anymore". The Jube has two levels, and lots of rooms. Because of the way the Jube is designed, you can have all sorts of music going on at once in each of the rooms, and they don't really interfere with each other. The Jube allows 4zzz and local bands to put on gigs there. One is Dub Day Afternoon, which have always turned out to be great days spent at the pub. The rock 'n' rollers and punks also play at the Jube a fair bit too if that you're thing. There isn't a time a day where the Jube isn't great.

It had been a while since I'd been to The Jubilee Hotel and that memory is still pretty hazy. Another look-in surprised me: pretty large rooms connecting to each other through homely doorways, funky retro wallpaper and a relaxed vibe. I certainly didn't remember how big the place was, and thankfully my recent trip saw me remembering the night's activities (and photos were taken to prompt any memory lapses). We were attending a private function upstairs. The music was a bit electro at first and slowly transformed into psy-trance. There was a teeny tiny smoking section upstairs, with smokers being delegated to a small, imaginary but very policed area beside the door. Smokers were crammed together like sardines, but they looked happy enough. Drinks were of an average price; the "glassies" were pretty friendly people, too. What I enjoyed most was the relaxed vibe and all of the connecting rooms. It feels like someone's taken an old deserted semi-mansion (not in the haunted house sense) and turned it into an other-worldy pub. The fittings aren't new for the most part, and the place is filled with old wooden tables, but this contributes to the relaxed vibe. It's fun to know you can sit on a table and swing your legs and the security guards won't ask you to hop down, either. Downstairs the vibe and fittings are newer. There's some private-ish rooms down here - private because people are usually in another room dancing or outside eating or smoking - meaning you can probably sit down with your friends in your own room if the place isn't too packed. Even if it's busy, there's enough space for leftover room. In this way, it's pretty much unlike any other popular pub in Brisbane.

The bar has a couple different sections, some Pokies inside too, but the pub quiz is outside on the beer-garden style patio. It's huge, lots of room to spread out. Picnic-style tables for good chatter and space for your food & bev while you enjoy the lovely weather (even in winter, it's not too cold in Brisbane). The Quiz Master is the best I've ever had. I love a good quiz, and this adorable guy (from Essex, adding a touch of ol' Blighty to the mix) is hilarious, fun, engaging and completely entertaining. The quiz itself is well-constructed and lasts a couple hours. The questions are a mix of challenging and easy, but of course the hardest ones for me are sports, Aussie politics and (the worst) Aussie sports. Thank goodness I have some proper Aussie mates on my team to fill those roles. Super fun night - highly recommended if you like silly jokes, lively competition and good music. On the food & drinks side of things at the Wickham, there's a great menu, complete with veggie/vegan options if that's your jam. The service is quick and efficient. Full bar. Smoking section round the back of the patio. 5 stars all-round. I'll be back!

However there is much more to this pub than initially meets the eye. If you walk through the British style pub it leads you to the biggest beer garden in the Valley which is quite a nice surprise. The beer garden is perfect for nights out and accommodate allot of people which makes it prefect for those group nights out. The great thing about the Elephant and Wheelbarrow is that it has something happening every night of the week. The most noticeable of these are the great food deals. This includes 2 dollar steak nights on Sundays and 1 dollar taco nights on Tuesdays. These are just some of the examples of meals for under 10 dollars every day of the week. Don't be fooled by the cheap price however because the food is definitely up to standard. On Fridays there is also a great deal for groups of 5 people or more, this gives a group a meal platter worth 80 dollars when you book in. The Drink prices are fairly pricey however so this is where people wanting a cheap night out need to watch out as the cheap meal deal can quickly get pricey. There is also a wide range of live music nights such as Monday karaoke, live music on Sunday and a great range of other live local acts through the rest of the week. Personally I enjoy the Elephant Unplugged on Wednesday nights. The Web site is updated regularly and is a great way to find out more about events that are hosted by the Elephant and Wheelbarrow.

He went so far as to call it the "loo water" rather than the "waterloo". Well walking into Waterloo now you would never guess its previous misbehaviors. There's the restaurant, then a seating area around the corner where there's often live music of a weekend and then there's the lounge area on the other side with curtains that can be pulled across to make your own private function room. The design is very cool, but the different sections make it a bit confusing. Is it a lounge, a bar, a restaurant or a music venue? Or all of those things? The seams in the design are pretty obvious, making it confusing as to what The Waterloo Hotel is trying to be. These things aside, when I've eaten there the food has been great. There's a tapas platter option which is good when you're with a group of people and in need of some nibblies while you have a few drinks. The bar is beautifully stocked and the staff have always been friendly. There are also function spaces available for hire. The times that I have been to the Waterloo Hotel have been great. It's a huge space, so perfect for a big group, and has everything you need for a night out- music, booze and food.

With new owners, and I'm assuming, a new passion to make it a gastro-pub of choice when you're seeking a simple but familiar meal, I'd say they're on the right track. He dined from the bar menu, ordering a steak sandwich which not only looked great, but matched it in taste. I found myself reaching for more and more of his lunch than my own. I ordered the pork belly and seared scallops from the main restaurant menu. The scallops were cooked to perfection but this dish made me realise I'm just not that into pork belly. I've tried, several times, but the ol' pork belly and I are not destined to be friends.
