I'm a sucker for a good cocktail and Canvas has the goods. Their cocktail list is broad and innovative and all nine of my drinking companions ordered something different. What was delivered to the table was a vast array of cocktails presented in different glassware and garnished beautifully. Presentation wise the cocktails in the Tiki mugs and coconut shells were the most impressive, while taste wise the Harlan's Spanish Breakfast demonstrated the artistry of the staff here. My own cocktail, The Vaquez, was a boozy affair of 23 year old rum, Amaro Averna, and maraschino liquor served over a coconut water iceblock which, as it melted, added different flavours to the drink. Genius.

Breakfast cocktails? I think I'm in love.... I'm of the ilk that believe in breakfast drinking, and you know what? There's just not that many establishments in Brissy that allow me to dabble in my love of a pre-noon debortuous tipple. It seems that I've finally found a place after my own heart... Canvas welcomes the breakfast drink with a breakfast cocktail menu which, while being small, was everything you want for your breakfast party. The food menu was tasty and reasonably priced, there were unique items on the menu and some standard fair so you should be able to please a group of picky peeps. If they don't like the menu you can always push them an extra cocktail. When we visited there weren't many people which I found quite shocking... Definitely put this place on your breakfast list and get some good honest Bloody Mary into you!

Canvas. If you haven't heard of it - prepare to be blown away. Over the past couple of years it has been open, it has won a slew of awards - from 'New Bar of the Year' in the Australian Bar Awards, to the 'Best Bar' in the Courier Mail. But why? Is it the upturned ship's hull which acts as a ceiling, the flowing, mellow artwork adorning the walls, or the deep leather couches which create the mood of the place? Better yet, it is the incredible bar staff, who are walking mixology-encyclopaedias, who can literally recite any piece of information pertaining to even the most bizarre liquor. What do they do with this expanse of knowledge? Create sensational cocktails - of course! Don't believe me? Then try a 'Vasquez' - Ron Zacapa 23y.o, Maraschino liqueur and Amaro Averna, served short over a coconut-infused ice sphere. The longer it takes you to drink it - the more flavoursome your drink will become. These guys only use top-shelf, premium products - so don't expect to find a bottle of Bundy around these traps. Got a hankering for a chilled martini? It can't get any cooler than being infused with liquid nitrogen. Or just after a simple G&T? The bar staff will chisel you off a hunk of ice, ensuring that your drink will retain its true flavour and be dilution-free. Not a cocktail aficionado? There is an extensive wine list and selection of craft beers. Cheese and tapas boards are available, and be sure to grab a mate and come on a Tuesday to dig into a tapas board teamed with a margarita ($40). Sunday is definitely the best time to pop in - live jazz, soul and flamenco happen every week - be sure to book ahead and it's fast becoming a popular watering hole!

Jam-packed with people of all ages from all the countries the beautiful world has to offer. Only catch is, you can only get in if you're a traveller or student (ID/Passport required) and if you're a girl. Although we have snuck the odd guy in with a bunch of girls with much success. It helps if you know the bouncer. They play music with the likes of Love Shack, Horny, Addicted to Bass and a lot of songs popular all over the world with the kids in the 90s era. They do go back to Dancing Queen and Mr Wendal as well and boy can you boogy to the tunes of this place. Be prepared to have some form of alcohol spilt on your fancy clothes every time you go there. Be prepared for people dancing on tables (even though they've banned it). Be prepared to body squish your way from the dance floor to the toilets and then back to the dancefloor with very willing body squichers - usually from Braz-eeeel (Brazil) and write a note on the wall to your ex-lover in the toilets and pretty much throughout the whole bar, on the walls, on the furniture... everywhere. Leave your memory here for free. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts, yes it's not posh, it's rather backpackery... but that's how we would like it to stay. Join in the songs with your hearts and hands and sing and dance to the wee hours to an awesome DJ with various glow in the dark articles through his hair. People have fun here, and that's what being young and travelling the world is supposed to feel like. Footloose and fancy free.

But the layout of the place is even better! It is a basement bar, half of it outside and the other half kind-of-inside. Very spacious, clean and with good selection of beer (albeit mostly mainstream beers, but a lot of them). Very comfortable, with some big TVs and also music. Good people watching too. The food is good, not amazing, but you can't expect amazing in such a central, tourist-y area. I had the wings and they're a solid 8/10, at least. Service was great too. Shout out to Elise behind the bar.

However, like most of the pubs in the CBD, this one does close quite early (though late enough that I was able to slip in here for a drink one night). There is nothing fancy or flash about this pub - expect the standard beers on tap - no craft beers. It also has a pokies area and a bistro, though there is a pool table tucked away in one corner. The beer garden is pretty cool as well, but unfortunately for the smokers it is not the designated smoking area. During the day it does get fairly crowded (though I have never noticed anybody out in the beer garden, despite it being a pretty nice day), but it was fairly quiet when I was there.

But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.
