Chicken curry with naan
Milton C.

Pig and Whistle is a nice place to grab a bite and a beer. I settled on the chicken curry with naan. For my beer I ordered the speckled hen. The curry was more of a British version rather than an Indian version, which makes since if you're a fan of Indian food. The curry was very flavorful, but the naan was a bit off. Not exactly an issue as this is not an Indian restaurant so you get what you get. The live music was entertaining for most of the restaurant patrons and the overall vibe was good. Some members of my party tried the beef pie which got a good response and the steak looked delicious; maybe I'll try it next time. The table enjoyed some calamari as an appetizer. The calamari was lightly breaded and held the spongy texture of squid cooked just right.

PIG, WHISTLE, AND MORE THAN A PENNY 'Ello chaps! Pig n Whistle is an Australian take on traditional British pub food and fare. They nailed it on ambiance and décor. The food ranges from bangers n mash, and fish and chips. Food is pretty standard, but good. Nothing surprising or memorable, but not bad either. What was memorable was the price tag. Soda is more expensive than wine, and this place for 2 people will set you back more than $60. Great variety of food options, and lots of tv's on with football matches.

Cool place to hang out and get your sports on. Dropped in to catch some American sports and Miss Tabitha was ever so accommodating. She put the Dodgers game on and I was a happy camper. Food is great. Highly recommend stopping in.

A massive hit with the ex-pats, the Pig 'n' Whistle on Eagle Street boats a large selection of brews and what is quiet rare to find in Brisbane - Guinness on tap. Big brother to the nearby outlet on Queen St Mall, this English pub caters for a much larger crowd and is the ideal location to watch a footy match (footy in this case referring to soccer, less so to rugby). The majority of the staff hail from the UK, so it's easy to get caught up in a heated argument over whether Manchester United or Arsenal are a better side, or whether cider is a girls' drink or a guys' drink. There are plenty of cosy booths to down a sneaky pint and chow into traditional British fare (think the likes of roasts, bangers and mash and of course, chicken tikka masala). Or chill out with a bunch of mates in the beer garden and listen to some live acoustic guitar in the late afternoons.

Great atmosphere and bar woodwork

Self service but a very thriving place at 5pm. Enjoyed my burger and wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Great place to eat and hang stress free. Friendly staff and the typical quirky theme. Great comfort food after a 14 hr flight from LAX.

Jam-packed with people of all ages from all the countries the beautiful world has to offer. Only catch is, you can only get in if you're a traveller or student (ID/Passport required) and if you're a girl. Although we have snuck the odd guy in with a bunch of girls with much success. It helps if you know the bouncer. They play music with the likes of Love Shack, Horny, Addicted to Bass and a lot of songs popular all over the world with the kids in the 90s era. They do go back to Dancing Queen and Mr Wendal as well and boy can you boogy to the tunes of this place. Be prepared to have some form of alcohol spilt on your fancy clothes every time you go there. Be prepared for people dancing on tables (even though they've banned it). Be prepared to body squish your way from the dance floor to the toilets and then back to the dancefloor with very willing body squichers - usually from Braz-eeeel (Brazil) and write a note on the wall to your ex-lover in the toilets and pretty much throughout the whole bar, on the walls, on the furniture... everywhere. Leave your memory here for free. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts, yes it's not posh, it's rather backpackery... but that's how we would like it to stay. Join in the songs with your hearts and hands and sing and dance to the wee hours to an awesome DJ with various glow in the dark articles through his hair. People have fun here, and that's what being young and travelling the world is supposed to feel like. Footloose and fancy free.

But the layout of the place is even better! It is a basement bar, half of it outside and the other half kind-of-inside. Very spacious, clean and with good selection of beer (albeit mostly mainstream beers, but a lot of them). Very comfortable, with some big TVs and also music. Good people watching too. The food is good, not amazing, but you can't expect amazing in such a central, tourist-y area. I had the wings and they're a solid 8/10, at least. Service was great too. Shout out to Elise behind the bar.

However, like most of the pubs in the CBD, this one does close quite early (though late enough that I was able to slip in here for a drink one night). There is nothing fancy or flash about this pub - expect the standard beers on tap - no craft beers. It also has a pokies area and a bistro, though there is a pool table tucked away in one corner. The beer garden is pretty cool as well, but unfortunately for the smokers it is not the designated smoking area. During the day it does get fairly crowded (though I have never noticed anybody out in the beer garden, despite it being a pretty nice day), but it was fairly quiet when I was there.

But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.
