The Dessert Degustation menu (but does not divulge all the delicious hidden suprises).

One of the best fine dining experiences in Brisbane. We went to Bacchus celebrate a friend's 30th and booked in to do their Dessert Degustation (O-M-G!). This isn't our first visit to Bacchus, we also went for our anniversary a couple of years ago and were blown away by how amazing it was and I'm glad to say we weren't let down this visit. Bacchus delivers on all fronts - service, quality and even though as a fine dining venue it is on the high end for $$ you never feel like you didn't get your moneys worth. Now, about the Dessert Degustation... Holy Amazeballs Batman! It is like you died and went to dessert heaven where everything is chocolately caramelly sugar coated nutty deliciousness and these amazing people keep appearing and bringing you more. 5 courses of dessert plus a bunch of hidden suprise courses that come out between them created as per the chefs discretion and are beautiful surprises (see photos and die of jealousy). Truthfully you will feel like you could fall into the deepest sugar induced coma ever but it's totally worth it. Sidenote: Cocktails are superb! Just do it. The staff are always attentive, professional and friendly. I would recommend Bacchus to anyone looking to have a high quality food experience that will not disappoint.

OK. Fine. Nice. At our recent trip to Brisbane's newest fine dining restaurant, located at Rydges Hotel, South Bank, we found the experience to be just that: OK, fine, nice. Which is why it was disappointing. The food, while being lovely, was not as great as I expected. Fine dining, to me, suggests something special, something that makes it above good bistro fare. And I don't think Bacchus was quite there. The flavour combinations of the pork croquette with beetroot puree and the pan fried white fish with peas, broad beans and vongole were fair. The cucumber and scallop carpaccio, however, was a little off; the tomato jelly consommé too watery and bland. And the beef tenderloin was good, without being anything special. In the review I read prior to our visit, they mentioned that there was an emphasis on matching olive oils to the food which I found quite intriguing. But the only time I noticed the addition of any olive oils was in the mashed potato (which admittedly, was quite more-ish). The waiter didn't mention it at all, which was surprising. But above the food, other elements also detracted from our experience. Particularly the sommelier, who appeared to be an obligatory part of the meal rather than optional. After stating we only wanted one glass of wine each, having already had a couple of aperitifs before dinner, the sommelier proceeded to dismiss what was available on the "by the glass" list as average and steer us towards a very expensive demi of French white. After my partner had indicated he wanted to drink red. And not even enquiring as to our food choices so as to match the wine appropriately. *And* referring to the Veltliner as being there "just for show"... I could go on. I would be interested to read what other reviewers thought, but based on our experience, we won't return (at least any time soon). My restaurant star scale: 1 star: rubbish 2 star: majorly let down by one/multiple aspects 3 star: positives and negatives average it out 4 star: minor detractors only 5 star: as close to restaurant perfection as you can get!

This was the first time I've been to high tea and I will say I was not disappointed. I had high expectations for these because from pictures that I've seen everything looks so extravagant. The server treated us very well and checked up on us multiple time to make sure everything was alright. You got to choose from a selection of teas and could try as many different ones as you wanted within the three hours there. The food that was given were to delicate and tasted as good as it looked! I was partial to the breakfast portion like the scone and cucumber sandwiches. They were light and fluffy. Although everything was small you definitely got full! By the end of the three hours, we didn't even finish everything. Definitely try the high tea here whether you're been to one before or not. The experience was worthwhile.

Delicious food for serious foodies. Their seven course degustation is amazing. Every dish was a pleasure and surprise from scampi tartare with caviar, gnocchi made out of calamari and scallops with mussels to decadent chocolate dessert. It's expensive but a lovely treat and well worth it. Amazing service with the best matched wines from all over the globe. It's a true foodies journey. A special occasion place to have a delicious treat and me extravagant.

Jam-packed with people of all ages from all the countries the beautiful world has to offer. Only catch is, you can only get in if you're a traveller or student (ID/Passport required) and if you're a girl. Although we have snuck the odd guy in with a bunch of girls with much success. It helps if you know the bouncer. They play music with the likes of Love Shack, Horny, Addicted to Bass and a lot of songs popular all over the world with the kids in the 90s era. They do go back to Dancing Queen and Mr Wendal as well and boy can you boogy to the tunes of this place. Be prepared to have some form of alcohol spilt on your fancy clothes every time you go there. Be prepared for people dancing on tables (even though they've banned it). Be prepared to body squish your way from the dance floor to the toilets and then back to the dancefloor with very willing body squichers - usually from Braz-eeeel (Brazil) and write a note on the wall to your ex-lover in the toilets and pretty much throughout the whole bar, on the walls, on the furniture... everywhere. Leave your memory here for free. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts, yes it's not posh, it's rather backpackery... but that's how we would like it to stay. Join in the songs with your hearts and hands and sing and dance to the wee hours to an awesome DJ with various glow in the dark articles through his hair. People have fun here, and that's what being young and travelling the world is supposed to feel like. Footloose and fancy free.

But the layout of the place is even better! It is a basement bar, half of it outside and the other half kind-of-inside. Very spacious, clean and with good selection of beer (albeit mostly mainstream beers, but a lot of them). Very comfortable, with some big TVs and also music. Good people watching too. The food is good, not amazing, but you can't expect amazing in such a central, tourist-y area. I had the wings and they're a solid 8/10, at least. Service was great too. Shout out to Elise behind the bar.

However, like most of the pubs in the CBD, this one does close quite early (though late enough that I was able to slip in here for a drink one night). There is nothing fancy or flash about this pub - expect the standard beers on tap - no craft beers. It also has a pokies area and a bistro, though there is a pool table tucked away in one corner. The beer garden is pretty cool as well, but unfortunately for the smokers it is not the designated smoking area. During the day it does get fairly crowded (though I have never noticed anybody out in the beer garden, despite it being a pretty nice day), but it was fairly quiet when I was there.

But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.
