I was first referred to Preferred Builders by my tax preparer, Happily, my first repair/remodel turned out wonderfully so I immediately started a remodel on my own home. Scope of work: remove all the carpeting in the house and install laminate plank flooring in those areas. The travertine flooring in the entry, kitchen and hallway had large craters which collected dirt and water residue after washing. I had the floor steamed, the craters filled and the whole floor resealed. I had a gasline installed in the kitchen and a new gas oven installed. I also had a complete bathroom remodel which included removing a huge jacuzzi tub and installing an elegant and safe walk in shower. For the bathroom Nir listened to my concerns and needs and then gave me two 3-D renderings of my options. Elba was fabulous and fast with permits, a purchase list and provided weekly job schedules and updates. I have now completed this remodel and I can't be happier. My Preferred Builders team was pure gold! I highly recommend Nir, Elba and Orel, the Foreman. We contacted Victor at City Builders on Yelp based on excellent reviews before giving up and Moses came out for the estimate. Instead of trying to sell us something overly expensive for what we thought we wanted, he took the time to show us several indoor options to create an indoor laundry area at a fraction of the cost. We were so enthused at having room left in our budget that we expanded the project to convert our older electric cooktop to a new gas cooktop. We had a quote in hand the next day, and he was able to start work the following week. All the new water and gas lines, appliance installations, drywall work and touch up were done faster than expected. The finished work is amazing, and we were extremely impressed. We know picking the right contractor is difficult, and there's a lot on the line. We have no problem recommending City Builders and know that we'll be calling them for whatever future home improvement remodeling we may need.

I hired City Builders and Development for a full front yard remodel at my home in Van Nuys -- metal…read morefencing, an automated gate, drainage, electrical/low-voltage, and pavers. What they delivered was unsafe, defective work and months of stress. After the job was completed, I had two independent licensed gate and fence professionals inspect the installation. Both found serious safety and code violations. The gate-operator entrapment safety device was bypassed and left sitting under the operator instead of being installed properly. The pedestrian gate near my pool was not self-closing or self-latching as required by California law -- leaving me exposed to serious liability and potential injury to anyone on my property. On top of the safety issues, the fence and gate assembly were fabricated about a foot too short, leaving large gaps under several panels that a person can crawl under. Instead of correcting the mistake, City Builders added "patch" pieces to hide it. Welds were missing or only tacked in multiple spots, posts were visibly extended with seams, and the gate operator was anchored with undersized hardware with exposed wiring pushed into the dirt. I sent City Builders detailed defect reports and photos -- including the findings from both independent inspectors. Rather than owning the problems and presenting a clear remediation plan, they dismissed my concerns as an "inflated scope," made partial repair attempts that made some things worse, and walked away leaving me to cover the cost of proper repairs. I have filed a formal complaint with the Contractors State License Board with full documentation. If you care about safety, code compliance, and accountability, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere.

From the moment I first sat down with Eyal Weizman of MDRN Construction, I knew he would be my…read morechosen contractor for my kitchen remodel. We seemed to speak the same aesthetic language and he quickly and enthusiastically whipped up a rendering of what my kitchen might look like. He was also very sensitive to and willing to do great work within my budgetary constraints. I immediately knew I would be in good hands. My kitchen remodel was for a very narrow space that had had a double electric oven and a big fancy gas range. The old cabinets, which were solid wood, had likely been there since the house was built in the 50s. An unfortunate water leak did major damage to the wood floor and seeped into the 2 layers of asbestos-laden linoleum underneath. Due to the need for asbestos remediation as required by my insurance (and the law), I was literally forced to see my entire kitchen torn out to the studs -- cabinets, appliances, floors and all. Enter MDRN Construction - after unsatisfactory experiences with the contractors my insurance had set me up with, I finally realized I must choose my own. In short, MDRN came in on-time and on-budget. Any out-of-line costs beyond the original estimate were due to major upgrades or amenities that I asked for on my own, with absolutely no arm-twisting from the contractor or his crew. For example, we were needing to upgrade the electrical in order to accommodate new all-electric and induction appliances, as well as replace the floor complete with framing and subflooring. I therefore also opted for raising the floor in the (sunken) kitchen annex to have it all be on the same level and to move the new commodious refrigerator in there. This upgrade also involved raising the exit door to the side yard and creating new concrete steps to the outside. Even with this extra work, MDRN still came in on time, though at the outer rather than the inner range of their estimated time frame (three months instead of two). I also have nothing but high marks to give the various crews that did the work, from demolition to electrical to cabinetry, to plumbing, dry wall construction, painting, and tile flooring. Everyone that came to my house, as Eyal promised, was a pleasure to be around and highly professional -- efficient and meticulous. The Ukrainian-born cabinet installation crew (in-house to MDRN), especially, were master carpenters and the finished product with solid wood exteriors is a showpiece. And absolutely everyone graciously pitched in when something extra was required, like hoisting my giant new refrigerator through the only possible square opening in the kitchen wall when the delivery guys couldn't possibly handle it themselves. Eyal came by frequently to check whether everything was going smoothly and what was still needed. And the most consistent presence was his assistant construction manager, Bardia, for whom no task or issue was too large or too small. He handled everything in a timely manner with ease and aplomb. If you're looking for excellent work, excellent client relations, honesty and efficiency, and a great aesthetic partner to work with, then MDRN is a terrific choice. The only advice I would give anyone who plans to live in their home while any pretty major construction is going on, is to stay on top of the daily dust-prevention and cleanup. I don't need show, but the work should be good functional quality. Above all, I hate salesmen who try to sell things, without basing on clear facts. I am an engineer and I like to thoroughly research, even though I am not in construction trades. I got 4 quotes before proceeding with Adam. He stood out from day 1, making it clear what he was recommending and why. He didn't try to oversell, and he gave clear evidence backed rationale for everything. He was honest. He encouraged me to get other quotes so I do my due diligence. I checked and double checked what the other foundation contractors told me, and it became clear towards the end that Adam's advice had been fact based. Some of the other contractor's advice conflicted... do an underpin, don't do an underpin. An underpin can harm your foundation by adding stress as you don't have rebar, etc. At the end, having satisfied myself I went with Adam. His prices were not the lowest nor the highest, but fair. Stand up guy. Highly recommend. Good company, the crew whi worked on my home were all Sunshine employees, not random temps. Looking forward to not worrying about my foundation again.
