First time to visit this place. Great service and the food was unique & very good. Loved the Smashburger and Waffle Fry Hashbrowns. The Smashburger was unlike any I'd had before as were the Hashbrowns. The others enjoyed their Gluten Free selections that were prepared in a separate fryer, which is so important for Gluten Free & Celiac sufferers. Their choices were Bacon egg n cheese biscuit, Fried Chicken (some of the BEST EVER) biscuit, Corn Dog and Waffle Fried Hashbrowns. This little place is a hit with the college students along with others enjoying downtown Charleston. Good new burger place in downtown charleston! It's right off king street with a fun vibe and good food. I've heard a lot of hype about this place, so we had to try it out. We ordered a deluxe burger and a crust burger with curly fries. Both burgers were super good and juicy, and served piping hot and came out quick! The curly fries were a good choice too. The meat is well seasoned and they don't skimp you on the toppings. The service was really friendly also. The menus didn't offer an explanation of what everything was, so I had to ask. They have lots of sauces to choose from for your burger, so that's fun. I also think it's slightly pricey for getting just a burger with no fries, but maybe that's just me. First time we've been on for Brunch and we're able to get the breakfast portion of the menu! They serve BFST til 2pm on Sundays! They have a Gluten Free biscuit-- The GF biscuit was dense with a nice buttermilk flavor but a little tougher than expected - still solid. GF FRIED Chicken biscuit - tender chicken with the perfect amount of crispy crunch, not too heavy of a breading finished with a sweet & spicy glaze. It was tasty! GF BEC! The scrambled eggs were light and fluffy and a generous portion with gooey American cheese and crispy bacon. The GF Hashbrown Waffles are always a fave as they are perfectly crispy on the outside, soft potatoes on the inside with a sprinkle of sea salt for a perfect taste. The size is great to toss on a burger or biscuit or eat offside! They normally don't have a corn dog, but it was GF and on special today. It was a flaky cornmeal crust on a juicy hotdog. At first it looked like it may be overcooked but it was perfect for Goldielocks-- not too hard, not too soggy, just right! The crust Burger is a slightly caramelizes crunchy burger with a hard smash on both bun and burger. Thinly sliced onions wilted atop without a flip. Toss some cheese and add bacon on that baby and you're in for a tasty toasty crusty treat! The manager is always so friendly and helpful and makes sure that everything is right so it makes for the perfect experience whether it's your first time in, your fifth or your fiftieth! Finally got to try out Joyland and I have to say the burgers were legit, we tried the regular smash burger and then the burger that was fully smashed (which came with its own special sauce). I have to say the crinkle fries were ok, maybe should have tried the curly fries instead. We did notice that the inside was very warm so we enjoyed our food in the outside alleyway, not sure if the AC was broken or something. Joyland is quite literally what's in the name. I went in with my husband after a date night show and it did not disappoint. My husband is a chef and was excited to get me learned an all Chef Sean Brock of Husk has done for the culinary industry. So saying I was excited was an understatement. Walking into the establishment, you're greeted by bright colors and warm smells. The menu is simple and catered for the burger connoisseur. (There's an impossible burger in there for you non-meat-eaters) BUT THE FLAVORS- OMG! In short, they have delicious burgers, fries and nicely crafted milkshakes. Charleston-legend Sean Brock opened up a location of his Nashville hot spot Joyland here so naturally I had to check it out, and it definitely didn't disappoint! I got myself a crustburger (think a smashburger with two patties, cheese, and onions on a bun that is also smashed like a pancake) as well as a "dipstick": dark chicken meat deep fried and covered in a BBQ sauce (with a little bit of hot sauce mixed in). The dipstick was ok but I loved the burger and curly fries. They were extremely filling and heavy - I don't know if they're cooked in lard or butter or whatever but just one double smashburger was more than enough for me. Curly fries are my jam and they hit perfectly. Joyland also offers crinkle fries but I ordered enough as it was. Washed it all down with a bottle of Mexican coke! As of writing this review they opened a little over a week prior to today, so they're still working out some kinks. The fountain machine wasn't operating and they only offered water and sweet tea outside of canned drinks. Our food took a while to come out, and this was before the lunch rush came in, so who knows how they handled that pressure when they're busy. Luckily these are easy fixes and shouldn't effect them in the long run (at least I would assume not). While the food was excellent, I don't see myself making another trip out of my way to go back. If you're downtown, it's worth a stop. If not, you can go to another establishment and probably get a good burger at a comparable price and maybe a little faster than what we ended up waiting for. I'd recommend to check it out though, if only to say you tried it. read more

I wanted a quick lunch and needed to use my birthday reward before expiring. I'd been twice and had a great first go but my second time eating here; was thoroughly disappointing so much so that I reached out to speak with someone. I ordered a kid's cheeseburger meal online through the Local by Toast App. My meal would take about 45-55 minutes until being ready. Gladly, I work downtown so no need for parking during the busy lunch hour. Walking inside there was a table of young private school students, young families, and others on their lunch breaks. I was greeted sweetly and asked what I needed. The cooks could see me and they greeted me too. The cashier/hostess was super nice and I enjoyed the small talk that we shared (I learned that her mom and I have the same first and last name -- how cool is that?!?!) I had to end up reheating my food only because I ran late. The sweet tea tasted like my Granny made it (she made the best). My cheeseburger was good although it was missing condiments and the waffle hashbrowns were tasty too and had just the right crunch but they are way too greasy. I'd still give my food and experience overall a solid 6 out of 10 and I look forward to another visit. read more

Everything is a la carte... burgers without fries; $3 surcharge for bacon. Despite ordering two orders of fries, I had to ASK for ketchup. A side of Joyland sauce (which tastes like mayo and ketchup mixed together) costs extra. No napkins delivered with food nor were dispensers found on the outside tables/placed prominently so you'd know to grab some after ordering before sitting. I am an In and Out girl all the way! Every time I go out west I'm so sad when I come home to nothing like their meals. Well I can honestly say joyland stole my heart last week! Truthfully! When you walk in it immediately feels like a retro diner, with a modern flair. It's nice to be in a restaurant with so much color when the world is becoming so monochromatic. I immediately just felt nostalgic and happy! It lives up to its name My husband and I got the works. He got the Crustburger meal and I got the Joyland Jr. We started our meal with the dipstick. The Crustburger was 5/5. It's crispy and not too heavy. The sauce was tangy and exceptional. The Joyland jr was a 4/5 it was cooked very well and the bun was not soggy. I just wanted more sauce (which I asked for and they gave me a free side of it). The FRIES honestly left me speachless so crunch and so flavorful 5/5. The dipstick was perfectly cooked fried chicken. Not soggy in anyway, and a perfect crunch to it. It reminded me flavor wise of like a sweet and sour chicken but spicy. Although this was fast food I didn't feel heavy or gross after. Our meal took maybe 5-10 minutes. The person who checked us out was extremely kind and helpful, giving the best suggestions! Sean Brock has thrown his hat into the fast-food arena with Joyland which has left me with mixed feelings. We decided to try last Sunday, so we went there at 2:30 to avoid the crowds, mission failed as the restaurant was packed. The inside was bright and vibrant, seeming to use every color of the rainbow. I can't complain about the service as the staff was informative and very friendly and seriously busting their butts to get the food out. My wife and I both started with the chocolate shake, and it was very good with just the right thickness so it was thick, but you could still draw it through a straw and nice and chocolatey. My wife got the Joyburger, a standard smash burger with cheese and onions. The burger was quite tasty, but I wouldn't give it that wow factor, hard to compete with Heavy's right around the corner. The waffle hashbrowns were crispy but lacking in potato and no real spice. They do give you some Joy sauce which was like a milder Zaxbys Zax sauce which did help them in the flavor department. The crinkle cut and curly fries looked good and would probably be the better choice. My wife and I also tried the Joystick which is breaded chicken on a stick with choice of dipping sauce. The meat was plentiful but unfortunately somewhat dry. A better option would probably be the Dipstick which comes soaked in BBQ sauce. Finally, I got the Crustburger which is their signature item. Two super thin patties cooked to a crisp with cheese and onions on bread that reminded me of a grilled cheese. Now the flavor was quite good, very beefy and smoky, but after eating half I kind of got tired of nothing but crust. As much as I love the crusty edges, I also enjoy the juicy parts of a burger as well so it kind of became one note. That's just my opinion and you might try it and love it. Now they are brand new, and these could be just growing pains until they find their rhythm but if you are advertising the Sean Brock name, I would expect something more extra. They are worth at least checking out just pack your patience. read more

Walked in super excited to try it out. 6 pm. Nobody inside, cool, no lines. But the staff didn't even look up from the kitchen. There was literally no one there to acknowledge us. Alright, I was torn between 3 and 4 stars but went to 4 stars for a handful of reasons. First, as burger lovers we knew we had to visit this place so we came for dinner around 7ish on evening. I so badly wanted to love it based on the hype but that's not quite what happened. The restaurant was pretty dirty - napkins on the floor, tables not wiped - but we wiped down a table and stayed. The staff all seemed to be doing their own thing and seemed confused when we asked a few questions, but we got it figured out and placed our order. As others mentioned - pricey for what it is. I love a good curly fry, so that was great but they are basically on par with Arby's (whose curly fries I also love). The burger was good, but not amazing, especially when there are so many other stellar burger joints in Charleston (including one I love that I drove right by to come here). Now, the pros. They are open late and have good food, which is perfect for this area of town. They had quick service and the portion size was fine. Will I come here again and give them another shot? Maybe, if I'm down here. I won't make the trip for this specifically, though. read more

First impression.. Staff terrible,, smells like sewage when you walk in the front door, dirty, weird vibe, crap music.. Just being honest here. Not a welcoming place not a Great vibe....the Mgr was there and that was the only thing keeping it going.. If they weren't there would have been worse..place was empty when I came in on a Sunday at 5pm. . The food... Well... I asked for my order and added in an ice cream and asked for them to give it to me when my order was ready.. They proceeded to turn around and immediately hand me the ice cream.. Which was just below mediocre in taste. Burgers definitely make up for all that.. Crust burger is basically a patty melt variation and their deluxe burger is pretty good.. Fries are frozen and were way under cooked.. When you eat then you can taste the freezer burn unless you douse in ketchup.. Deluxe had way too many pickles on it.. Like 7.... Overall burgers are definitely noteworthy but the vibe and terrible service don't make up for it. Hugh Babbies IN west Ashley destroys this place on service, quality and taste.. Not only was their signature crust burger absolutely delicious, the team really went above and beyond. My boyfriend and I showed up pretty late one night to give this place a try. Who I assume was the manager on duty, greeted us and was super helpful in guiding us on our first order. When he found out it was our first time visiting, he gave us a discount and include all the sauces for us to try in our bag, along with some extra fries. The food was great, the team was great.
