Got to see Josh Harrison today on a post solid-biking week topped off with a 13 shots of sake, 2-3 beers bender last night, and feeling fatigued, washed out and unable to get energy back, plus having some hip flexor issues. On top of Dr. Harrison's extremely excellent techniques (and yes, he does listen and if you tell him you've got more to crack, he WILL redo it!), I was treated to 2 new things today: First was the "decompression" device -- I couldn't get a more specific name from the doctor than that. It's a device primarily used with injured patients, but also for people having back issues as well -- it's a modern version of the medieval "rack" -- minus the arm and leg restraints. How's that work? You basically get a waist restraint and hip restraints made of Velcro fastened onto you snugly, to hold you secure. Then the mechanical parts slowly stretch your spinal muscles -- and your spine itself -- a few inches total at a time, hold it there for 90 seconds-2 minutes, and then relaxes and returns you to your previous position. I was on the device for about 15-20 minutes today. Everyone suffers from some degree of spinal compression and they usually don't get a chance to stretch it out properly -- even sleeping only lets it decompress some -- this device helps you to do it fully. For any of you readers out there thinking this sounds extremely painful, let me assure you -- it was wonderful. It's very slow and stretches you out a few millimeters at a time. I think it was originally designed to help car accident victims regain some flexibility, but it works wonderfully in a chiro's office, as well. I also got an impromptu massage from Bryan, a fairly new masseur at the clinic. Bryan is of Mayan descent and is built like a stocky fullback -- but there aren't any end-of-the-world prophecies happening under his care -- he can go back and forth between gentle and deeper massage. I haven't seen if he can really bring "the heat" for when I get super tense (i.e. a lot of pressure), but I imagine he probably can -- his pressure seemed to be just what I needed today. He uses "Biotone" in a big ketchup-squirt bottle container -- made of grapeseed, apricot and sesame oil. He said it can get a little slippery -- but hey, sometimes that's what your skin is yearning for. Both Bryan and the Biotone felt amazing (and it absorbed right up onto my skin). 2 more excellent reasons to go see Dr. Harrison if you're in the SE neck of Denver. Just S of Leetsdale between Monaco and Quebec -- definitely worth it. Josh is the best chiropractor I've seen! I;ve been seeing him for 6 years, having chosen him because of his educational background, Lucky me! Who knows how education correlates to excellent performance in the "real world", but I picked a winner. Usually very promptly available, Josh seems to know and execute just the right adjustments to cut my back tightness loose. I have had lower back surgery 20 years ago, and sometimes feel some radiating pain radiating down my left leg. This ends up less severe as a result of Josh's treatment. (A fear I came in with was concern that muscle/chiro treatment would not destabilize the disk problem. Josh manages to fix my back muscle aligment with NO disk impact.) I bought a deal for an adjustment and a massage. I went in a little unsure about it as first. Went in and met with a very laid back Dr. Harrison. We did a quick consultation regarding the pinched nerve in my arm. I am a hairstylist and have had this pinched nerve for months. Went to another chiropractor before Dr Harrison and she was not able to help. Went to someone else who did the needling treatment which helped for a bit. Finally went to Dr. Harrison and the adjustment was 5 minutes. Then went to his massage therapist for a deep tissue massage which was awesome. It's 6 weeks later and the pinched nerve has never come back. I had the greatest experience with this guys. Very laid back environment, very friendly and they know what they are doing. I was in town for the weekend and just needed an adjustment and not an evaluation. I got a great adjustment, he put me on his "roller table" for 10 minutes and I was very happy with his skills for only seeing me once.
