Came here for a dental emergency when my crown molar snapped off over the weekend. Dr.Sarkissian saved my smile all in a few hours. I was very impressed with his technology, the office has an onsite Cerec machine that uses a 3-D scanner to create a crown in about 30 minutes. I was able to get my new crown installed the same day. In other offices I had been to prior the turnaround time for a replacement was a three week wait & temporary composite in the meantime. The office is well kept & has very kind and helpful staff. I tend to have a bit of dental anxiety, but Dr. Sarkissian and all of his staff made me feel safe and well taken care of. Accessible parking on site as well. Can you imagine a Holistic Dental office with latex gloves? Or handing out water in plastic bottles? Or an office that the Dentist doesn't know the difference between Hydrogen Peroxide in the 'brown bottle' as he called it, or food grade? Stop looking! This is where you want your children and yourself cared for. My 21 month old had a lip tie that caused severe decay and had to have a few fillings, a baby root canal and the lip tie lasered away. To avoid speech impediments, infections, and further complications this truly was unavoidable. So we did what we knew to do. Researched! We saw 4 different dentists in order to find the right team for our son. Dentistry can be extremely toxic, from ingredients to methods used. We are so happy with this team who practices the most holistic approach possible. They not only use high quality products, (read ZERO MERCURY amalgam fillings) they were high quality and compassionate practitioners. Amazing dentist and staff. They really made my 3 year old feel comfortable and made sure they explained everything to him before cleaning his teeth. They didn't try to make us do x-rays which I was thankful for as I never understood young children needing all that radiation unless there is a major problem. I went to Dr Sarkassian first to remove amalgam fillings. Yes, he did a great, 'safety first' kind of job. The next thing was the crown that I got from another dentist which started spontaneously bleeding one night. Dr S. showed me in X-ray that there was a gap between my gums and the crown - normal, he said, but he could fix it with laser cauterization. [Its a longer explanation, but trust me when I say it made perfect sense when he explained what had happened and how he would fix it.] The reason for the two stars is 3-fold - 1] the Moment he stopped doing the big work on putting the crown in, he had me sit up in the chair and sign a release that I didn't object to the work - a legal release form that I accepted the work 'as is'. After I signed, I sat back and he finished up the details of doing the tooth. 2] He has a staff person dedicated to talking about your 'treatment plan' - but I worked in restaurants for long enough to recognize an 'up-sell'. I have never had this happen in any other Dr.'s office, although it is a familiar patter in restaurants and at car dealerships. 3] The crown he did totally doesn't match the rest of my teeth - it is far enough back that I don't care, but my new dentist is clearly appalled. [He hasn't said it in words, but his facial expression spoke volumes.] I am amazed that he stopped work and asked someone who was still groggy from anesthesia to sign a legal release - and that he has them handy is a bit scarey in itself, I think. I have a new dentist [Dr Ho in La Canada] and I am going to go write his 5 star review now, if you want to read that one. read more

This is one of those good/bad reviews. First the good. I was searching diligently for a dentist who would remove my 40 year old amalgams. I didn't want them in my mouth anymore, and my own dentist wouldn't do it. Well, Dr. Sarkissian did an excellent job, with great attention to patient and staff safety around the toxic methylmercury in the amalgams. I really like what he has done to keep up with his profession. I love the Waterlase; there was no need to inject novocaine for dental work in my mouth. I like the attention to holistic principles, and NO flouride. The office is beautiful, the staff is friendly and professional, and the location is convenient - just a couple of blocks off the 134. Here's the downside: Dr. Sarkissian has chosen to ask for cash up front, rather than to bill your insurance first, and then bill you for what is left. This caused a big problem for me, stretching my treatment out over a couple of years while I rustled up enough cash to pay him to remove the fillings. Also, I purchased a very expensive package to treat TMJ. (He also has other packages, such as sleep apnea treatment), and I was sorry that I did. My chief criticism is that I paid a large sum of money up front, and received NO written explanation of the package or what it included. I just got verbal instructions to complete one task, then another, then another, and finally quit when I discovered that they would be taking away from me the appliance that they made for bruxism, and would be giving me something else. I also got incomplete verbal information about the financing I used that ended up costing me $600 in unnecessary interest. (I was told it was an interest free loan for 18 months, but NOT that I would be charged interest for the ENTIRE loan if I did not have it paid off in 18 months). So I would warn: caveat emptor about his large packages. Be sure you get everything in writing before plunking down your money. read more

This is a review in hindsight: I used to be a patient of his for several years. I spend massive amounts of money because I had many problems with my teeth and jaw due to TMD and silver fillings almost in all of my teeth. This review is simply to help others in my condition. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr. Sarkissian as a great if not the best dentist I had for amalgam removal. He knows what he is doing and takes his time as he uses the correct protocol to protect the patient and his staff from this toxic element. Totally worth every dollar I spend to remove my amalgam fillings! He does decent crowns too. I am happy I found him to do this work in my mouth! Thank you! I would NOT at all recommend him for SEVERE TMD or TMJ problems. It took me several years and "wrong dentists" to find one experienced and knowledgeable enough to treat my very severe and complicated TMJ disorder. It's not him! Sarkissian "tried" to do so but it only cost me thousands of dollars with no long-term relief. He really does not have enough experience treating TMJ disorders from what I can see now. I wish he would have enough integrity to return my hard earned money for a job not well done. If you have a SIMPLE TMJ problem that is not debilitating then maybe he can "try" his techniques on you as he gains more experience in the field. I don't like sharing my secrets so I write this review with some remorse, knowing that my dentist would probably be busier for it. Sarkissian's motto is "Primum non nocere" which means "First Do No Harm". He totally lives up to his motto by incorporating modern dentistry with holistic principles. You know that drill regular dentist use, the one that incites shivers and phantom vibrations on my teeth? Well, this dentist uses Waterlase MD, his Jedi laser to combat cavities. Waterlase MD is gentle enough to forgo that anesthesia. And gentle enough for my daughter's ever multiplying cavities. My really young son fractured his front tooth on a couch accident and we were advised by other dentists to get it pulled out and have a baby root canal procedure done. Scary. We went to Dr. Sarkissian, he looked at the tooth, sent us home with some homeopathic medicine & echinacea and a week later, the fracture was gone. Once I save up enough money, I'm getting my teeth fixed by Dr. Sarkissian. read more

I've been a patient for years now and I always enjoy going to Dr. Sarkissian's office for a cleaning and dental work. The hygienist is wonderful and absolutely pain free. I've had a number of fillings done by the Dr. and he always manages to fill my cavities in a way that does not require any numbing or novocaine. When it came time for my kids to see the Dentist we were very happy that they had a positive experience. The Dentist can always be so scary for kids! My oldest son had some real dental issue because he had an extra front tooth that had to be removed. The second front tooth came in totally sideways. The Dr. was essential in helping us get our son's teeth coming in straight and adjusted BEFORE we needed braces using appliances and retainers. So now he is 11 and most of the work is done and he will need minimal orthodenture due to the Dr.'s advice and treatment. All in all Dr. Sarkissian's approach is friendly and uses all the latest technology to deliver pain and stress free treatment. His office is clean, quiet and efficiently run and I never have to wait for my appt. The only down-side to all of this is in the category of "you get what you pay for". Since Dr. Sarkissian is not in my (or any) insurance network, I pay for most of my family's services out of pocket with very little covered by the insurance company. The fact that I continue to come back when I could switch to an in-network Dr. is actually a testament to how much I love being his patient! His services probably would not be as good if he had to lower his standards due to being controlled by a certain insurance plan. I wish my bill was covered more by my dental plan so that is my only criticism and the reason for the 4 not 5 stars. All else is wonderful! We've had two great experiences with Dr. Sarkissian. First, when she was only two, our daughter had major carries in both upper front teeth. We consulted at least five different dentists. Dr. Sarkissian was the only one who immediately wanted to try to save them. All the others just wanted to pull them. Dr. Sarkissian didn't *promise* he could save them, just that he wanted to try. And he did. He removed the decay and built them back up, layer upon layer of porcelain. This was not cheap, but she had those teeth for four crucial years of her childhood. (Imagine lacking your upper front teeth for four years!) More recently, he used the natural development of her jaw (stimulating growth rather than pulling teeth or impeding development) to treat her crossbite, giving her a lovely profile and a future very likely free of oral surgery. As others have said, the doctor, office, and staff are first-rate and you pay for that care. For us, it has been well worth it. read more

I just had a great experience with Dr. Sarkissian and his staff. I had an old filling removed and a new one put in. It was an absolutely pain free and calm procedure, completely opposite of what I am used to experiencing at other dentists offices. They were very attentive to the fact that I was nervous, were very careful with my tooth, cleaned the deeper parts of my tooth with a laser and even let me watch The Walking Dead during all of it. I didn't even feel the needle when they had to numb me. The front office staff is very helpful and works well with your insurance to ensure that you are getting reimbursed, and quickly. I've been going to Dr. Sarkissian for about 3 years now. Yes, it costs more because he is an out-of-network dentist, but it is so worth it. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my and my daughter's teeth. At 3 1/2 she had a cavity in between her two front teeth. He fixed them with the waterlaser and she didn't need any anesthesia. She was calm and just watched a movie while the doctor and his assistant worked on her. Afterward we were able to get something to eat right away. She had no pain or swelling. I also had three fillings done and it was the same, painless and easy. No recovery time needed like when I get Novocaine and regular drill work. Another thing I like about him is that he does look at the overall health of his patients and advised me about what to feed my daughter and how to optimize our health. One thing I do have to say is that he has a very quiet, unassuming manner which some might interpret as aloof. They are quite mistaken. He truly cares about his patients. My 2 1/2 year old son needed a lot of work done on his teeth, and we were referred to Dr. Sarkissian by our hometown holistic dentist. I should mention we live about 2 hours away (in Bakersfield) and we decided the travel was worth it for the extensive work my son was needing, as well as the fact that we were not willing to compromise on seeing a holistic dentist! We are a very holistic family (healthy eating, no vaccines, etc) and for some reason my son had food allergies, and later on began having a lot of tooth decay, so the idea of anesthesia was very scary for us, knowing he clearly has some sort of health issues going on. However, our first trip down to see Dr. Sarkissian went so well. My son was nervous at first, but quickly warmed up and was laughing. Dr. Sarkissian is really great with kids and put my son at ease- something really important to me. He let me know that my son had many cavities and needed fillings and possibly even pulpotomy. As a mother, I wanted to know all the details here. It turns out Dr. Sarkissian has his own anesthesiologist who is very qualified and has all the certifications and has worked with young kids for a long time. Important details when deciding to put your toddler under anesthesia! The day of the procedure we met early with the anesthesiologist, Dr. Hussein, who answered all of our questions and talked with our kids- he was so amazing and kind! He is a father too, and was great with the kids. I was really surprised at my son who was so at ease.. my son normally is pretty shy and afraid in these type of situations but he climbed into the dental chair and laid down without hesitation. They allowed us (the parents) and my young daughter to be in the room for sedation. Dr. Hussein talked gently to my son and got the "mask" on him to help him relax before starting the IV. My son did not mind the mask over his nose and did not even flinch when the needle for the IV went in! He soon went under and we left the room for the treatment to begin, and a few hours later he was finished. My son was groggy and sleepy, but had no complications at all. Dr. Hussein was so amazing and deserves recognition for his part here! Now for Dr. Sarkissian, his work absolutely blew us away. I've posted before and after pics to share of my son because 2 of his front teeth were almost completely gone from rot, and we imagined they would be just filled in- but no- they were completely rebuilt! My son looks like a new kid with his smile, and my husband and I could not be more happy with the work. Dr. Sarkissian is also an amazing artist (he has a lot of his artwork around the office if you stop to notice) and I believe that's one aspect that makes his work so great. He's intelligent and educated but also artistic. The price we paid for everything was, well, a lot! And it came all out of pocket, but it was worth every penny when we saw the "after"! Everyone we know comments on my sons teeth about how great they look and a friend of ours is now taking their child to him (also a 2 hour drive for them), but Dr. Sarkissian's work speaks for itself. On my first visit to Dr. Sarkissian's office, I was very impressed with the quality of care and professionalism of his office, from the dental staff (Karmen and Myra) to Dr. Sarkissian himself. Myra in particular was very nice and patient - she took the time to follow up on the questions I had after speaking to Dr. Sarkissian during his dental exam. The office itself is very clean and they take a lot of care in explaining everything they do. I would feel comfortable referring a friend to Dr. Sarkissian as a child's dentist - there was a child patient in the room next to me and it seemed to be a peaceful process. No crying, no screaming! After my exam, I had more questions (lol), so Dr. Sarkissian took the time to answer my questions more fully in his consultation room. He also answered my questions about my father's sleep apnea. He encouraged me to seek second and third opinions about his recommendation - which to me, means that he is confident about his knowledge and skills and open-minded enough to learn from others. He has probably the BEST bed-side manner (if you can call it that) of any dentist that I've seen - he is really patient and comes armed with lots of information, including some videos he showed me in the conference room to illustrate his points. He does not dismiss your concerns like other dentists have. I am very careful and research my major health decisions, but rest assured that I will definitely consider Dr. Sarkissian's recommendations after doing my research. P.S. If you don't get a call back after leaving his office a message, I recommend calling a few times and/or emailing him - I had to call him a few times during business hours, to reach a person on the phone. read more

I arrived at his office in an emergency situation, having never met him before. He spoke to my husband and me rather frankly yet in a gentle way the facts and options of my situation after looking at my mouth and the x-ray we brought in taken an hour previously elsewhere. Dr. Sarkissian is a man who cares and really enjoys his profession. After all this, he even stayed in touch whenever I emailed him with my many questions over the following week as I was trying to sort out what I was going to do. From the very beginning we tried to raise our son as healthy as possible. Did not buy any baby food, but invested in a blender and cooked his own organic food. When it was time to find a dentist for him the fist time, we initially followed the recommendation of a friend who sent us to a dentist specializing in pediatric dentistry - even with smaller treatment chairs. But we left in horror - this dentist did not see anything wrong with putting mercury in my son's teeth and was planning to use anesthesia for every little treatment - probably considering his own convenience more than the health effect on the child. We were so glad that google then helped us to find Dr. Sarkissian. Not only did we agree on using anesthesia as sparingly as possible, he also did not use any amalgam which in nearly all other countries around the world is either banned or at least not used any more. Dr. Sarkissian does not have smaller treatment chairs for children - - - he has something much better! For a small child the parent is in the chair and has his child on his lap - this is so much better as it comforts the child in addition to giving the perfect position for the treatment. Reminds me of the story of early space flight when astronauts found out that ball point pens don't work in zero gravity. After being his patient for several years I can say first hand that Joseph Sarkissian is not a practicing holistic dentist because he used toxic materials on my restorations and I need to have it redone by another dentist. (btw, he gives out free teeth cleaning appointments in exchange for reviews on Yelp and facebook which explains why he has so many reviews when most dentist don't have any) I came to him knowing I have dental material allergies. I did the serum testing that he recommended yet he didn't follow the safe material listings. He actually used highly reactive materials in my mouth on 6 occasions. The materials he used are cheaper than the ones I requested. I completely trusted him and liked him so I didn't check on what he was doing. I couldn't understand why I was feeling sick. I was sick for months. When I discovered that he was putting highly reactive materials in my mouth, I was shocked and at first thought it was an error. I complained about it and his response was to completely ignore me and insist on cementing the materials in my mouth even while I was ill from the reactions. He just didn't care, didn't want to be bothered. Dr. Sarkissian is free to pursue any kind of dental work he wants, but to say that he is holistic is false advertising and has caused great harm. If he would have just followed the material compatibility report and been honest about it, my dental work would have been finished long ago without all the trauma and side effects I had to suffer. read more

Dr Sarkissian is very nice and I was attracted by the idea of "homeopathic"dentistry, thinking it would be more natural and more safe. Unfortunately his skill level is not good. I have had problems with much of the work he did and I always wondered about the visible metal between my gum line and the crown he had placed. When I finally moved to a new dentist I was shown with a camera exactly what was going on, which even I could immediately see and my dentist commented that some of the choices of inlays/crowns/fillings were the opposite in terms of placement of what would be considered best. My dentist graduated #1 out of a class of 200 at USC years ago, his work has been excellent (the best I've ever had!) and I trust his judgement. And by the way, my dentist also does not do amalgam fillings either. I'm sorry to say, but I would look elsewhere for truly good quality dentistry. read more

It is very comprehensive in presenting who he is and what he does, and very helpful in terms of information & education. I appreciate how specific he is on the website with such things as spelling out the exact things to take in dealing with an abscess - not just telling people to take homeopathic remedies but saying which ones to take, and not just saying to take remedies that have a natural antibiotic effect but actually listing them. I first saw Dr. Sarkissian about two years ago. Even though I lived in Malibu at the time, a close friend promised me it would be worth the drive-- boy was he right! Dr. Sarkissian has taken care of every issue I had with my teeth and gums, from mercury removal to crown replacements to some long overdue bonding. I probably have seen Dr. Sarkissian at least ten times now. What strikes me the most is how meticulous and painstakingly thorough he is with everything he does. He really is so much more than a technician; he is a master of his trade and an artist in everything he does. I have never had my mouth looking as great as it does now!
