I've been to quite a few Jose Peppers and the Espinaca with chips and salsa is always my favorite part. For this particular visit, I went with the lunch carnitas taco which was the perfect amount considering I always go to town on chips and dip...like embarrassingly demolish the chips and dip. I digress. I wouldn't go as far to say I was impressed by the flavor of the taco, but I was pleasantly happy with it. I was able to fill up on the one lunch taco which also comes with 2 sides. I opted for black beans instead of the standard refried bean choice and they were ok with their seasoning. Our waitress was pleasant, but was fairly soft-spoken which is not necessarily a bad thing. My mother and I had a bad experience here. A woman seated us and told us that some guy [let's just call him Joe] would be right with us. Joe walked by us a couple of times, and didn't even look at us. The woman who seated us ended up taking our drink and food orders, even though we were at one of Joe's tables. Joe finally acknowledged our presence but wasn't genuine and frankly gave me the creeps. When our food came, my mom's tacos were sizzling hot...you would think that would be a good thing, but apparently her dish was left in the heating shelf for too long because Joe forgot about us, and the heat ended up burning the lettuce and tomatoes and sauce onto the plate. Basically, there was a brown, singed crust on her plate. Furthermore, the BOTTOM of the plate was still dirty with food from the last time it sat with other dirty dishes. Gross. I ordered the chicken avocado enchiladas, which said they had chicken and cheese in them topped with guacamole and avocado cream sauce. THE ENCHILADAS WERE 99% NACHO CHEESE. It was disgusting. Avocado was dark brown. I picked out the pieces of chicken and left the rest. This may have just been a poor choice on my part, but the dish was easily 3000+ calories with no nutritional value. GOOD THINGS: Chips were really light and flaky and yummy. My mom's tacos had a lot of fish in them and, once they cooled down, were okay. WEIRD THING: Is it normal for restaurants to bring a bottle of hand sanitizer to your table with you? I wasn't sure how I felt about that. We were passing through Topeka, KS and decided to stop in to Jose Peppers. In short, I was impressed. The things I liked: My wife ordered the chicken and avocado enchilada. I ordered the chicken burrito. Service was quick (my order was to go, to be consumed at the hotel). The servers were friendly, offering drinks while we waited. Both meals tasted fresh, the salsa was excellent. My wife even speculated that perhaps the tortillas were made fresh (I don't know if I believe that, they could be, but I find that highly improbable, possible, but improbable). The things I didn't like: Some kind of tamale-like filling was served on the beans (just a small scoop), my wife liked it, but to me it was sickeningly sweet. I did not eat it. As mentioned the salsa was outstanding, but the chips were sub-standard (not horrific, just not good). Overall: Fresh tasting cornucopia of delightful Mexican food (it may not be an actually cornucopia, but it was a healthy size portion). I would go again if I lived here. read more

It is chicken breast, jalepeno cream cheese, wrapped in a tortilla square then deep fried, with melted cheese everywhere. I love it. Jose Peppers proves that even chain restaurants can get it right. Had their sampler for dinner to get a feel for a large cross section of their offerings and liked everything on offer. The Pollo Magnifico which is a baked crispy chicken burrito topped with cheese is undoubtedly the best I've had and I highly recommend it. i went almost near closing time but still the service was fast and friendly so overall a nice place to have a decent meal. read more

Okay, well there are some amazing places to eat Mexican food in Topeka, and they all seem to get hit with health food violations at some point. This place is corporate, their food is average. First and last time at your restaurant. We arrived a few minutes after 2:00 pm. Got seated and chips and drink. After about 25 minutes and twice requesting a server, finally Rochelle came to the table. She was unable to answer basic questions about the choices. We placed our order and my husband requested another soda, never came. After almost an hour I stopped her and asked where our food was. Her response was I may have forgotten to put the order in before this large group who came in after you. So it's going to be awhile. I said how is that our fault you forgot our order? Her nasty response to me was and I quote, it's not my problem that we are short staffed! I said excuse me but it kind of is and she snapped off again with this isn't my problem and stormed away. We gathered our stuff, went up front and requested the manager. I offered to pay for the sodas we drank and told her what had happened. Her response was I'll take care of the sodas so don't worry about it. That was pretty much it. That server was nasty and rude and the manager ineffective. So you've lost customers and I'll be sure to let anyone i know about it. read more

We've eaten here a handful of times when we visit Topeka and it's always been good. But the last 2 times.....!?! Awful. Awful is an understatement! We thought the first bad experience was a fluke, things happen kind of thing, but apparently not because the last time we were there was worse! Much worse! We arrived about 130pm for a late lunch. The hostess seemed bothered to look up from what she was doing to have to seat us, and the staff I did see milling around seemed to be half asleep and moving at a snails pace. She eventually grabbed some menus and led us to our table where we passed dirty table after dirty table while we walked on and over old food on the floor, only to be seated at a table that was thankfully wiped down but the seats and floor were COVERED with food! Everywhere was old food. Like 5 toddlers had eaten there and just threw food around and stomped on it. I was stunned and waiting for the hostess to have some response, maybe even show some embarrassment, but instead she seated us there, turned and took off before we could say a word. My husband, 3 small children and I sat there in someone else's lunch mess for about 5 minutes waiting to be served and waiting to request another table. A clean table. I kept waiting for the candid camera cameras to roll out......but they never did! Even other patrons having lunch kept looking at us, equally stunned that we were seated there. I should've taken a picture but I was too busy trying to keep my 3 and 4 year olds from smearing old rice into their clothes. Needless to say, we got up and left NEVER to return again! If this is how the restaurant is shown to the patrons and public, how is the back, the kitchen, the hygiene of the employees......?!? read more

Had a great meal here on a busy Saturday night. Sat at the bar, service was fast and friendly. The bartender made a fabulous strawberry margarita, and she didn't pour light, which was nice. Wow! After eating here at least a dozen times, I can't believe that I haven't written up a Yelp review. This is my nephew's favorite place....so if he's in town, this is the go-to spot for dinner. Love the chips and salsa. We always add one or two orders of their white cheese espinacas. Servers are generous with bringing more chips whenever you want more. I've started ordering the parmisian shrimp quesadilla. After all the yummy chips, I only eat about half. The other half is just as good heated up on a stone in my oven the next day. The marqaritas are good, but inconsistent with the amount of alcohol. Sometimes 2 gives me a blush and sometimes I can't even tell I had a drink. The Big Bunch ate here last week and the manager was great about taking our big reservation and being ready for us. Stopped for a late lunch at Jose Peppers and it was clear that the restaurant was completely understaffed. From the wait at the hostess stand of over five minutes with no one greeting people, the large number of empty booths piled high with dirty dishes, to the server who takes drink orders comes back with waters one drink and says I forgot what you wanted the experience left much to be desired. The food was not bad. The guacamole had some kick to it. The parmesan-crusted vegetable quesadilla was quite good. However, the whole meal went downhill when the server brought the check, we requested a box and the server disappeared never to be seen again. We had to first go and find someone to give us a container, and then flag someone down at the hostess station to pay the check. Restaurants are not fun when they are short-staffed, neither for the patrons nor for the employees. Pretty average Mexican restaurant but the one star is because the waiter took my wallet. I left my wallet on our table, I was with a group of people and went to use the restaurant before we left and never sat back down... left for like 10 minutes and realized what I had done went straight back and it was gone. No where to be found and they would NOT check the security cameras. So, reason for this review is when I go to a restaurant it would be nice to go to an honest place where you don't have to worry about a bad situation turning worse because an employee is a thief and the staff doesn't want to help. I called the next day and asked them to check their cameras and the lady said they were "too busy" because it was the weekend and maybe they would if they had time with a very rude tone, I said thanks and she straight up hung up on me after that. Came in around 3 no one is at the front....okay right before shift change so this is bound to happen. I stand there for 7 minutes.yes I checked the time. The person comes up not so much a hi, welcome or sorry. He just says "how many?"....I'm like okay this is not how you're supposed to greet people but okay don't worry about it. He gets us Sat at a dirty table with no silverware....then he gets on his mic and asked who's going to take the table in front of me.....nobody wants it. Well that's cool....guess I should leave?.... I'm still holding in. The flustered guy who sat us is like um let me get you started. Runs to grab paper and says "what would you like?" I'm like "umm where are the kids drinks, I don't remember what you have." He's still flustered and says"it's just like the regular drinks." So I'm desperately looking over the menu to find the drinks and can't find kids drinks. So I ask "do you have juice or milk or something?" He's still extremely flustered like I'm inconveniencing him....he rambles off a few juices and yes they have milk. Okay cool. We'll get through this. And then after he writes our drink order down he says "whatll have?" I'm clearly confused. So I'm like "execuse me?" He says again"whatll you have?". I responded"what do you mean?". He sighs at me frustrated and says "to eat". I respond "oh. I'm not ready I need a minute." He just turns and leaves. Okay I'm still holding in here. We'll get through this. I have my two sons with me. We just have to order and then I'm sure it'll be fine. Guy seems to be searching for another server after taking my drink order. Guy finally comes back and drops off drinks and he's like "need anything else?" I respond well are you our server?". He says no I'm actually just training." Now I'm like ohhh okay. Give this guy a break...he's trying I guess? So I responded "oh okay well I'm ready to order of you could let someone know." He responded I'll take it". Okay get the order in. Should be smooth sailing right? Wrong. No one comes back. My kids finish their drinks and politely set them at the edge of the table. I too finish my pop and my water and follow suit to make it easy for whoever to refill them. I'm watching as one server cleans their section, another server is frantically running around trying to take care of her tables and then another server leisurely taking care of her section. The trainee who took my order is sitting with the manager. Okay.....still haven't met our server. We sat for 12mins without anything to drink at this point. Our food comes out. Oh cool the manager is bringing it out. She drops the food and just leaves. Doesn't ask if we need anything. Ignores our empty cups just walks off. Did I mention I still don't have silverware?.....I see her get on her walkie as she walks away..maybe she's calling for our server?...i have no idea. We get over halfway through our meal before anyone comes to check on us. Oh look its the server I've been watching leisurely taking care of all her other tables. She doesn't apologize, she doesn't introduce herself. She too seems to be flustered and short with me. She seems to get upset when I try to tell her what our drinks were. I thought I was being helpful since she wasn't the one who had taken the order. She gets the refills and disappears. We finish those drinks before we're done eating but our server is too busy chit chatting her regulars to notice. Oh did I mention our server is the certified trainer?..... She finally comes over to drop the check not to ask how was everything or if we'd like anything else but just to throw a bill at me. She does say she'd grab boxes, I try to explain what I'd like and she trys to cut me off and talks over me then visably gets annoyed and starts walking off while I was still talking.... Okay this is the point that I gave up. This was the point that I'm like no this is the worse service that I've gotten but it wasn't just her. There was a visable lack of care from the whole place except for the one server frantically running around. The manager didn't care about our visit, my "server" who is a certified trainer and last but not least the trainee. Nobody had any care. I find this extremely sad. I just wanted to have a nice meal with my kiddos. I'm not hard to please I just want a drink while I'm eating. I'm sorry Jose Peppers that we were too difficult and demanding for your staff to handle. I usually tip between 30%-50% because I'm industry but this is the first time I've not wanted to tip but I couldn't do that. I know how much servers make and I still tipped 20% which is more than most. I'm hoping that the management and trainer and trainee will take this as a learning opportunity but sadly to say I'm sure I'll just come off as "one of those customers." Now, im not from topeka, or this part of the midwest at all, so perhaps i cant give this place an accurate rating, as i feel like the food here may be extremely mid-westernized? Everything here was deep-fat-fried and covered in copious amounts of greasy cheese....now, like i said, if that is the mid-western taste, then I see why topekans seem to like this place. However, having lived in texas, this place does not even slightly resemble true tex-mex, and it certainly is not authentic, like some of the places i ate at growing up in chicago. On my first-only-last trip to jose peppers i ordered what i was hoping was cheese dip, but it tuns out it was some vile concoction of cheese, cream cheese, and spinach. I couldnt even eat it, after taking one bite, so i sent it back to get some plain cheese dip....which really wasnt much more tolerable, to be honest. It was yellow, sharp and tasted worse than a jar of tostitos! The beans here boast about being lard-free, but we were told that they are still NOT vegetarian because they are made with pork! My wife, being vegetarian had NO options here! So next time you want to eat as much cheese and generic fat-ass-fried tacos as possible, and you want to feel like a true mid-westerner jose peppers is your place! read more

One star is generous. The food was awful. The taco had no flavor and was filled with gristle and fat along with the meat, the best part of the tamale was the masa around it. The cheese enchilada tasted like it was filled with queso cheese. The refried beans were runny and the rice was salty. The queso as an appetizer was not very spicy; very bland. The salsa tasted pretty good after I added habanero sauce to it. I ate one bite of each part of the entree, drank a lot of water and asked for my check. I declined a to go box. We love this place. We enjoy trying new places in the area but when we have tried several that were misses, we always end up at Jose Peppers the next time we want to eat out. It's our go to place when we want consistently good quality food. The food and service is always great. We h had great servers here each visit. Have not tried anything we did not love. The chips are the best we've had in Topeka. Always fresh and warm. The California quesadilla is my favorite and never disappoints. It's a kid friendly place and the staff always goes above and beyond to make it fun for my 3 year old son. First time eating here as a Topeka visitor. The service was top notch; our waitress was amazing with our kids and made sure our drinks were never empty for too long.
