I was lucky enough to be in Whole Foods (Roosevelt) yesterday and stumble upon a box of caramels near the cheese island. There were two different kinds of caramels, molasses and fleur de sel. Decided to go with the salted version and I am so glad I did. As many know the trick to a great caramel is in the texture; too soft and its a runny mess, too hard and it will have you in the dentists chair tomorrow morning. Jonboy Caramels were just right, chewy but soft enough to eat with ease. Flavor wise they've nailed it on the head too. There was a great balance of sweetness and saltiness that makes you want to eat the whole box in one sitting (which my wife and I almost did). Can't wait for my next trip to Whole Foods so I can try the Molasses version. read more

Jonboy KEY LIME with SEA SALT caramels are a distinctive departure from the usual fleur de sel caramel. As soon as you bite into one, the key lime flavor and sea salt are immediate and lingers throughout. Came across these guys on my first occasion to the Ballard Farmer's Market after having lived in the neighborhood for about a year (better late than never right?). You can find them here, as well as in a couple different markets in the area - the advantage of coming to the Market though is that they have samples for tasting, though it may be cheaper to buy in a market. Last I checked, they carried sea salt and molasses-ginger flavors. And while I wasn't too interested in the sea salt, their molasses-ginger was amazing. Smooth, creamy, chewy and rich - a bit too rich to be eaten whole though, so I'd recommend splitting a single piece into two or three portions (and hey they last longer this way :D). $8 lands ya a box of, well, enough to last ya a while. read more

One stick is a bit too much for me so I like to cut them in half and eat a little bit at a time. I also get more this way =) Molasses-ginger has a bit of zing to it and is a more unique flavor. Fleur de sel is more traditional. I love the texture as it's not too sticks to your teeth chewy. I like the bits of salt too. It's a great combination of sweet and salty. Although I must say I am not a fan of their Absinthe with Black Salt (not a fan of licorice), I love Fleur de Sel and another one with bourbon. The side of the box of fleur de sel caramels we bought had a made on date (10/28/09) and best (eaten) by date. Not that we'd let a box of these delights sit for another 3 weeks or so. Certainly I would not let these go by the wayside after paying $6.50 for a box. The wife and I really don't know how many caramels were in the box since we scarfed them down as soon as we got them home from the Queen Anne farmers market. The samples that they had out at the farmers market didn't really do them justice. Must have been the cold weather. At home, they were super rich with just enough salt to tickle the taste buds. Just bought two boxes of the Fleur de sel at the University Farmer's Market. The family did a drive by taste test and we came back as soon as we tasted the caramels. It's got a great blend of sweet and salty. I especially like the fact that the caramel was very smooth. It doesn't get stuck in your teeth, like the typical store bought caramel. We bought one box for ourselves and another for some friends. I mean we could share our box, but that just wouldn't be fair to us. I also tried the Absinthe (taste like licorice), but didn't get a chance to sample the Molasses-Ginger since we already had our hearts set on the Fleur de sel. The absinthe black salt caramels are my favorite but they have a strong anise flavor so if you don't like that you should try a different variety. Found these babies at the West Seattle Market at Halloween time and they are THE BEST CARAMELS ever! I got the fleur de sel and my husband loves licorice and got the Absinthe and Black salt caramels and we've both gone into hiding our own boxes to keep for ourselves, they are TH@T good!
