I expected to leave my 6 year old's 4 hour nut challenge (in a very small room) wanting to pull my…read morehair out, but instead left this office with even more love for Dr. Detjen and team. We've been seeing an allergist for many years that we absolutely love (shoutout to Dr. Story), but wanted to explore OIT after my son had a scary reaction to nuts while we were on vacation. And it seems like when it comes to OIT Dr. Detjen is the main show in town. We went in for an introductory appointment and I really liked Dr. Detjen and his entire team. We left armed with lots of different info, including an order to get a CT scan since he thought my son was getting way more colds than he should be at his age. The only thing I didn't like was that this office hasn't moved to an electronic paperwork system yet. While they seem to be ahead of the game when it comes to allergy related issues, they are about 10 years behind when it comes to administration. I thought the CT scan was BS, but have to admit it was one of the best things we've done for my son. The results showed that he had a bad sinus infection that wasn't clearing up. After 2 weeks of brutal antibiotics/steroids this past summer I've noticed quite the difference in both the frequency and length of his colds. The waitlist for OIT is a long one (and I fear this review may make it even longer). Our first step is to do a few challenges. It took several months to get in for challenge #1, but it was well worth the wait. The staff went out of their way to make sure he was comfortable and he mentioned sitting around for 4 hours eating snacks and playing on his ipad did make for an enjoyable afternoon. He passed this first challenge (and has been on the hunt for rocky road ice cream ever sense), but I have no doubt we will still have a great experience if he doesn't pass future challenges. We are headed back there in a week for a hazelnut challenge and my son is actually looking forward to it, although I think trying nutella is a big part of the reason why. We're just a few months into our journey with Dr. Detjen, but I'm already so impressed. His office is very conveniently located for us, but I can see why many people make a long drive to see him and his incredible staff.

Normally I would give this type of person five stars as she was timely. friend, very smart and…read moreupbeat. I went to see her for the sole reason of getting a second opinion of a corn allergy to confirm what a different doctor had diagnosed me with two prior. I have been grossly misdiagnosed for 11 years at NMH so am extremely sensitive and wanted to be certain that life after altering corn diagnosis was indeed accurate. The doctor didn't perform any skin or blood test though I specifically asked for one at least to be performed ahead of time. She Shea is that since I didn't have anaphylactic reaction to corn that there was no need to run tests and bill Medicaid , though in speaking with Medicaid they were fine with them conducting whatever tests were medically necessary. The doctor told me I could either try avoid corn for 4 weeks to see of it helped my bloating or simply eat it and see if if I noticed a difference!!!! I am disabled and it took a huge effort for me to get to her office only to hear maybe you should try corn, perhaps not. When I booked my appointment I was assured by her receptionist that a skin test and/or a blood test would be done or I wouldn't have made the trip up to Evanston from the city. Anyone could've given me that advice. I left in tears and contacted my insurance company who helped me find yet another allergist at NMH who seems to be more receptive and listens to the patient. I'm updating this review out of fairness to the provider. She was very gracious and kind during the visit but there was a misunderstanding and perhaps I didn't make myself understood. She called me today to apologize which is a sign of class and good manners. I just wanted to be tested to have a finite answer about my corn diagnosis after living with a misdiagnosis with a different provider for 11 years; which has nothing to do with Dr. Chou. She couldn't have been kinder and more personable. She offered to run the tests and to do what it took to make me feel at ease. She is top notch. Thank you. I would recommend her now after her follow through.

October2024 visit I arrived with a written summary of my symptoms, research articles, and clear goals (testing for MCAS, CFS, fibromyalgia, and coordinated care). Instead of addressing any of those concerns, Dr.Hirani performed a routine allergy test, which later came back negative. She never acknowledged the complexity of my case or explained why the allergy test was chosen over the issues I raised. March2025 visit I returned specifically to discuss persistent post‑exertional malaise and ongoing MCAS‑related symptoms. The conversation quickly became confrontational; after I stopped speaking because I felt unheard, Dr.Hirani asked, "Well, what do you want from me?" I requested MCAS testing. She replied that she didn't think I had MCAS because I didn't have hives, repeated this point while writing the order, and offered no alternative referrals or acknowledgment of what I had spoken to her about. Her demeanor was rude and dismissive, and she provided no guidance toward specialists experienced with complex, multisystem conditions. Outcome After leaving Dr.Hirani's office, I sought another physician who confirmed I do have MCAS. I am now receiving appropriate treatment. Bottom line Dr.Hirani did not engage with the detailed information I provided, dismissed my concerns, and failed to refer me to a colleague with expertise in complex cases. Patients with overlapping autoimmune, connective‑tissue, or complex conditions may find her approach unhelpful and potentially discouraging.
