The staff here were extremely friendly and efficient for how busy it was inside. We ordered a blueberry muffin, coconut donut, and French crawler. The blueberry muffin was fantastic and had almost a crumb like texture on the top of the muffin. The French crawler and coconut donut were also great and each had their own unique flavor profile. You really can't beat the prices here as everything was extremely affordable. The parking lot does get a bit crazy in the mornings but people seem to move in and out quickly. read more

Visiting Newark for the week and when I asked the locals where to get donuts they all said "Jolly Pirate"! The donut shop feels like a throwback to better times, and that only enhances the vibe. Such a disappointment, spent $17.85 for a dozen donuts and they were terrible. We used to go here every couple weeks. We knew it was under new ownership last year and we hadn't been in the area for a few months so we stopped in for our donut fix. I don't know what they changed, but nine donuts we didn't even try. My favorite as a kid from JP was always a stick donut to have with coffee and was a childhood memory with my dad. I had to spit it out, they were burnt and the inside had no flavor at all, the apple spice donut the icing had an odd flavor and the filling was Apple gel no apple chunks anymore and tasted like a tin can. The crumb donut was so dry it fell apart and tasted like saw dust. I though, oh it maybe was just one bad donut so I took a bite out of those 3, all were trash and my husband took two bites of his maple long John and dropped it into the trash can and took the 3 I tasted threw them back in the box and took them outside to the dumpster can. Will never go back!! So sad, one person was working. No one was working we recognized from when the other owner had it and the donuts ruined the childhood memories we had of enjoying that as our Sunday treats after church and now it won't be where we stop for donuts anymore. Great yeast donuts that were so light and fluffy. I always pick up the jelly filled ones and that's the yardstick with which I'll grade a donut place. The banana creme, apple and raspberry filled were absolutely delicious. My friend had picked the other three and she enjoyed those as well! The cinnamon sugar donuts had way too much cinnamon in the mix and no where near enough sugar and they had that crunch on the outside like they were old. The selection sucked. Visited for the first time and I'm not sure I get the hype I see in other reviews. Got a cream-filled longjohn, a peanut butter-filled chocolate-iced yeast donut, and a chocolate old fashioned. They were fine. The pastry was good--light and fluffy for the yeast donuts, dense but tender for the old fashioned--but the fillings were skimpy. Maybe it was a rough day, but the customer service left something to be desired, too. Placing my order felt like I was inconveniencing the folks who work there. I don't expect anyone to act like I made their day by showing up at the shop, but I'd prefer not to be scowled at. Lastly, walking into the shop, you're greeted by a sign that says guns are welcome and that the store is protected by the second amendment. I would give it less. Not only for not wearing masks like you are expected to do. I have talked to the health department and they don't agree with you. But then to tell a customer to STFU and then defend it by continuing to talk badly about your customers. I am a 30+ year customer and my mom has been going longer. But I will no longer ever come back. Also FYI she is in the health industry, so she puts her life on the line in nursing homes to make sure people are ok. So ensuring she is ok and her patients by wearing a mask and being around others who are doing the same is being smart, and responsible. An extremely sketchy donut shop with all of it's townie charm. I've never been here during the day -- most of my trips occur after midnight during the night hours, usually with five friends in tow (or on a date). The same two women always service the counter and the eight or so stools are usually filled with aging townspeople who have nothing else to do on a Saturday night. The baked goods are delicious and it's fantastic that the place is open 24 hours. I'd recommend getting the donuts to go, though. While experiencing a donut seated at Jolly Pirate is something everyone should do, it gets old... or rather, kind of weird, after awhile. read more

Haven't been to a JPD in quite sometime and found this after leaving the Indian Mound Mall area. I stopped in and got a donut and coffee.. while the coffee isn't that great.. I did really love the chocolate cream donut.. I also feel like the prices were fair and the girl working was nice too. There was a nice selection of donuts and while pretty basic, I did notice a maple bacon concoction that seemed more of a gourmet donut. This place has been in Newark forever, and I have very fond memories of this place from my childhood. The doughnuts are good and very fresh. We got a dozen (13 at Jolly Pirate) and enjoyed all of them. The only negative thing that I can say is that the filled types fell flat at times. The long cream stocks had plenty of cream, but our round creams were underfilled. But good all the same. I really enjoyed my plain vanilla cream, and I always love Boston Cream as well. The kids love that the doughnuts come in the treasure chest boxes. It's nothing fancy, but the prices are reasonable and the doughnuts are fresh. Definitely much better than going to the grocery store. Prices are around 0.95 per donut, 7.99 for a regular dozen (they were on special for $6 today so be sure to ask about specials), $12.99 for a specialty dozen, or $9.99 for a mixed dozen. read more

Disclaimer: I am a sucker for cheap and delicious donuts that come in a treasure chest box. Jolly pirate offers a baker's dozen for $8 which is a steal. There are a lot of choices for donuts which is also excellent. The shop itself is a bit run down and would not be the best spot to hang out. The shop offers some specialty doughnut sticks (which I am forgetting the name of now) but there is one reason to stick normal donuts: if you order a dozen they come in a box that looks like a treasure chest. The box is also much more efficient than most because the donuts are put in on their side rather than lying flat in a tray. The staff were helpful and patient with me as I deliberated about which donuts to order. If you are in the area, I certainly recommend seeking this place out for a snack or sugary breakfast. Looking over the other reviews I see someone gave a one star review. This is a professional shop for sure and they do make donuts fresh throughout the day and into the evening so it is not surprising that on "free doughnut day" they ran out.
