We found this great little coffee shop while on a trip for my brother-in-laws basketball tournament. The staff are super friendly and helpful, and the coffee was excellent! A few things we really enjoyed: first, even in a small-ish town they had plenty of non-dairy milk options that my wife could have. She got an iced 1/2 caff latte with almond milk and vanilla syrup and said it was very good both times. Second, and even better, they carry gluten free, vegan baked goods!! (See my review on Madelyn's). These are egg free, dairy free, and gluten free ! All very good and highly recommended. A friend visits River Road Coffee House daily because he lives it so much. When I was in town taking him to brunch, I had to check it out. I needed caffeine anyway for a long drive back home. I wasn't sure what to expect when I pulled up as the building is pretty plain from the outside, but I was excited that it had its own parking lot. I received a very warm greeting when I entered. The girl who took my order was so kind and we had a nice conversation about Matcha. River Road just got Matcha, so I was excited to be able to order that. It is unsweetened, which is great, because then you can control how sweet you want it. They also had a sign out front stating they made their pumpkin syrup in-house, so I got a regular Matcha latte with that pumpkin syrup and it was 6/5 stars! Oh my gosh, I wish I lived closer so that I could get it more often. The food menu looked delicious and if I hadn't just come from brunch, I would've grabbed something. They also have a little grab and go counter if you're in a hurry. The decor was simple, but cute. Two things I liked most were a drink, inspiration board listing so many different flavor combinations, and a Polaroid picture board of all the dogs who have come through the drive-through. read more

I love river road coffee but I have went multiple times now and haven't gotten the things I've requested. It's not hard to add some whipped cream on top and that makes me wonder if I'm getting the extra espresso I paid for. Starbucks never disappoints and it saddens me to go support a corporate business instead of local but that's what you have to do to get the coffee you asked for I guess. read more

We ordered a frozen hot chocolate and a salted coconut latte. The drinks were quickly crafted with attention to detail. Really smooth flavors and I was delighted that they serve one line coffee blends. The iced drink made a long rainy drive much better. read more

But if that's not every going to be an option again I would suggest at the very least reopen the lobby take out all the chairs and tables but allow patrons to park and go in when we sat in a line for 15 min for two lattes they were delicious but not something I would do again anytime soon you're definitely losing money. read more

Meh. It's very popular for froofy drinks but I am a coffee guy. Black coffee or an Americano, and the occasional hot tea. So I'll review those. First of all, whether you get a small or a medium Aericano they use only one shot. What?! Yeah, I was surprised as well. Makes no sense and a medium with one shot tastes VERY week. The black coffee isn't bad but always has a slight hint of cinnamon. I don't know why, but I can taste it every time I would get a cup of black coffee. It could be because they are using the same decanters for their flavored coffee's as the regular coffee. I don't know. Hot tea is the same as the Americano. If you get a medium or large do you just get more hot water. Don't offer larger sizes of hot tea if all you're going to do is fill it up with more hot water. They are definitely a coffeehouse and do not cater to key drinkers or offer any looseleaf teas, at least not when I have been there in the past. That being said, if you are into froofy Coffee drinks they got you covered! They are delicious, and they offer a lot of different choices. They are definitely very sweet and most will run you over five dollars with tax. read more

been going for years but for the last 9-12 months the customer service is horrible. Stopped spending my $ there after many times with no customer interaction at the counter. Stood in line with others and the staff made no attempt to welcome us. No "hi". No " thanks for coming". No " nice to see you". No "we will be with you in a minute". The drive thru were the only customers they were servicing. Several times after waiting for 5 minutes or more with no acknowledgement we left. and other people left as well. We all are now at the downtown location where our business is appreciated. they always greet you with a smile and a welcome. In the economy today I don't know how a business can treat customers poorly and expect to stay open. We have many coffee shops in the area that appreciate customers. The latest sign on the 21st store says it's under renovation. I hope it's for staff and management renovation. I still wont go back. Downtown is always friendly and knows who butters their bread!!! Well, WTF Yelp? They removed my entry for a new business and added my review to this other, incorrect location. They have a new location in downtown Newark. 26 N. Park Place. Study spot requirements: Plentiful seating: Yep. About a dozen tables out front and another small room in back. There's a small bar by the window, some high tables and some normal 4 tops. Respectable number of outlets, too. Locally owned: Yes, and partners with OneLine coffee roasters. This is the fourth location, I think. Relaxed atmosphere: Pretty quiet and laid back. Couple of families hanging out and a few take away customers. Wi-Fi: Free, password changes regularly. Quality coffee: Totally. Bean variety and brew methods to please the coffee snob, plenty of flavors and frozen treats for everyone else. They do a classic cappuccino correctly, too. Snacks: Pastries and baked goods, plus a few gluten-free goodies. Plus, Palumbo's Italian Market is in the same store space so you can get read food from them. I'm quite glad I've found this local gem. I'm quite loyal to Starbucks, but sometimes I just can't bring myself to get out of the car and walk into Kroger, so off to River Road I go. It's quite busy in the morning and the drive through window isn't in the best location so the line is usually out to the road. If I'm coming here, I'm not trying to get out of the car so that is slightly off putting, but it's good so I wait. And it's worth the wait for the large iced River Road mocha... I don't know what is in it, but taking my first sip it's like Zeus himself, flew down from mount Olympus to bring me the sweet sweet ambrosia of the gods blended ever so gently into a sweetest most satisfying coffee I've very had the pleasure of drinking, angels descend from heaven above and dance on the hood of my car. Yes, it is that good. Kind of expensive for the size though. But their cups are biodegradable. read more

I want so badly to love this place, as I want to support small businesses and "ethical" coffee, but after repeated visits I have finally come to accept that it is just not to be. Spending $4-5 for a fancy coffee is a luxury and if I am going to indulge, I want more for my money and taste buds than lightly flavored milk. The ambience and the service are great at both locations, but the fact is that the coffee is just REALLY bad. This has been the case, actually, with every Crimson Cup store I have ever been to. It is obviously this brand of coffee that is the problem. Someone already mentioned that the coffee is weak and they are correct, but I assure you that adding an espresso shot will not change that. I really don't think they even use an espresso roast for their lattes because there is absolutely ZERO coffee flavor, much less a more concentrated and robust flavor that is supposed to be imparted by an espresso. Essentially when you buy a latte, you are paying for milk with a tiny bit of color from the coffee, a little flavor from the syrup, and an overwhelming sweetness akin to drinking condensed milk. Sorry River Road. Maybe you can find a new, ethically sourced brand of coffee that actually tastes like coffee? I'll be glad to give you another try then. read more

House coffee was fine, fresh and smooth on my visit . I wish I would have seen the press pot option but didn't ask. Tj eh ham and cheese croissants were pre made a one wrapped. They heated it and plated it for me but the heating killed the croissant. I suggest having it cold or room temp instead. Staff was friendly ,young but maybe not with the training for a true coffee house. read more

I'm addicted to coffee, and my favorite is an Americano. For those of you who won't know, it is just espresso and water. So if you order Americano you can easily judge the quality of the espresso itself, which is the basis of a great drink. That being said, best Americano that I've ever had! The lay out is super cool and open here. I like that there's an Italian deli sharing the space. Perfect in case you get hungry and plan on being here a while. I imagine this would be a great spot for groups, dates or just to get some work done. Actually, I'm only seeing 3 spots where there are outlets, so that could be an issue... My barista was very nice and pleasant and my earl grey was tasty. Very flavorful which isn't usually the case in my experience. My biggest complaint is the temperature. It is literally freezing. Not only does it appear that the AC is on, but every fan is on as well. It feels like a morgue, and my tea, which is usually piping hot, cooled off quicker than I would have liked. I wanted to support the local small business on small businesses Saturday, so I hit the drive thru for a mocha. The pace in the drive thru was glacial. If the place had been packed, I could understand but there was maybe 5 cars parked in the lot. But, I quickly forget long waits when I get served an amazing mocha. However, what I got was a funky tasting kinda mocha-y burnt aftertaste latte. I managed to drink half before calling it quits and chucking it into the trash. I don't know what syrup they use but it is truly heinous. I didn't taste much coffee because of the overwhelming funky syrup taste. And the aftertaste...burnt, bitter, off. I gave two stars because the girl at the window was very friendly. I wish I had taken a sip before driving away. read more

River Road has the best espresso hands down! After lots of research to learn how to make a good cup of coffee at home, my taste changed a lot and I realized how mediocre Starbucks is. while searching for a pre-lunch pick me up, I stumbled on this gem (and narrowly escaped another nearly desperate Tim Hortons purchase). the place is thoughtfully laid out and made me wish I could've stayed and enjoyed my fancy coffee there. the staff was great. the fellow at the register gave me a thorough run down of them menu when I told him it was any first visit. Local owned, feels like your average coffee shop inside. I ordered a cup of dark roast and was disappointed when I poured the cream in the cup and could see the cloud of milk hit the bottom of the cup before blending with the weak joe. I prefer a thicker brew. Will order shot in the dark or an espresso drink next time. read more
