I heard about Crooked Tree Breadworks on a recent trip to Petoskey and dropped by on my last day in…read morethe area. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to visit until near the end of the day and at that point they had sold out of most of their items, including the famous pepper parmesan rolls. They still had a few items left and we decided to pick up two of them. Kouign Amann ($4.95) - The caramelization of the sugar on this pastry is on point. The bottom has a layer of sugar that has melted into a glaze with extreme caramelization, almost on the verge of being burnt. If it had been left in the oven for a few moments more, it would probably have started to develop an acrid taste. Luckily, it was pulled out at just the right time. Even the sides of this pastry have been graced with sweetness and a top layer of thicker sugar crystals/grains adds an amazing crunch. While the kouign amann may not have as many thin laminated layers as a croissant, there is still an excellent buttery interior which helps balance the outside sweetness. The interior is fluffy and layered well into an even honey comb pattern. This kouign amann exceeded my expectations. (5/5) 3:00 O'clock Baguette ($5.90) - Yikes, this is by far the most expensive baguette I've ever bought. I was kind of dreading it when I first felt the baguette through the bag - it seemed a bit soft and limpy. When I tore into it soon afterwards, I found my concerns to be somewhat unfounded. By somewhat I mean that yes, there is hardly a crust on the baguette, but the interior still exhibits a nice chew and the flavor is very well developed. It's a decent baguette, but nothing outstanding. Perhaps the crust would be better earlier in the day when fresh baked? (4/5) I was definitely surprised by the quality of the baked goods at Crooked Tree Breadworks. I'll have to revisit earlier in the day on my next visit to the area so I can try more of their breads and pastries.

I understand that sometimes things happened but the the mean glares we reviewed from the women working there was incredible! Also the egg was in a square shape and had a weird texture. Our visit was on Sunday Sept 21. we also ordered a breakfast burrito and it was hot and the cinnamon donut was tasty.

Their handmade bakery goods and other goodies are made fresh daily, sometimes hourly, are always delicious and you can tell they take great pride in only offering the very best they can. We have ordered 'Yule log' otherwise known as 'Bûche de Noël', Christmas cake several times, including this year & they are always delicious and very well received by our Christmas guests! They use locally sourced ingredients where they can and always seem to have a lively, fun, yet relaxed atmosphere of locals and seasonal guests either stopping by for an excellent cop of coffee & a treat or maybe lingering for a while enjoy a breakfast treat or sandwich and while hopping onto the Internet to check of email via their Wi-Fi network. You are always greeted with a friendly 'Welcome' or 'Hello, we'll be right with you.' if they are busy and you always feel welcome even if it's your first time! We loved everything we've tried including their artesian breads, pastries, cookies, Pecan Rolls (so good when they've just come out of the oven!!) as well as their made-to-order cakes, which are amazing!! Highly recommended & we love supporting locally owned & operated businesses & this one is definitely worth supporting!

Yes, friends, this donut temple is housed in a former gas station with Greek Revival flourishes, now lovingly restored into what can only be described as Art Deco meets Glazed & Confused. A former gas station with a Hollywood-era name, like a movie star who left the screen for something more meaningful. Like donuts. The donuts? Subtle. Soft. Soulful. They're the anti-Crumbl. No technicolor sprinkles, no birthday cake frosting tsunami--just golden rounds of lightly sweetened perfection that whisper, "You don't need to show off when you're this good." Try the Old Fashioned. Then sit out under the overhang like a dignified donut aristocrat and soak in the scene. Johan's isn't just a bakery. It's a vibe. A vintage dream. A fried philosophy. On Wednesday, after visiting the farmers market, we stopped by johan's for a breakfast treat. My wife had a breakfast sandwich and I had an apple fritter that was as big as my head. No kidding, it was huge. They were both delicious and reasonably priced. The freshly brewed coffee was exceptional. What a fun way to spend a lazy morning. There are so many pastries, muffins, donuts, and sandwiches offered that I could not even begin to list them all here. It would be fair to say that there is something for everyone, including frozen novelties for kids like Sponge Bob Square Pants popsicles. There is a small inside place to sit and a larger covered outdoor patio where you can sit and people watch.
