The fudge is really delicious. I compared the Howse's sample of dark chocolate fudge with Kilwin's sample of dark chocolate fudge and the Howse's sample was markedly better (better flavor and creamy texture, while the Kilwin's was sweeter and more grainy). I also tried the Kilwin's regular chocolate fudge which was better than the Kilwin's dark (better texture) but still didn't taste as good as the Howse's fudge. The downside is that Howse's is more expensive, $14.75 per slice, so $29.50 for 2 slices, whereas Kilwin's is about $23 for 3 slices. On the day that I went, Howse's had more fudge flavor options than Kilwin's. read more

This business may have great candy, but the question is how much are you willing to pay for it? Came in looking for great fudge and got it, for way more than my wallet could handle(around 3 dollars over Kilwin's price per 1/2 lb.) Don't even get me started on the price of individual candies or chocolates! I like the quality of their fudge, however the way they prepare their candies is completely unsanitary. They wrap caramels and dip strawberries and turtles with uncovered hands, and mold their freshly made fudge in the same manner. Who knows exactly what you're getting into when you enjoy your caramels! The shop itself has shrunk in size, as they have barricaded half of their store off with a wall of plastic crates, making for a rather tight squeeze on a busy day. They also seem a bit understaffed, as I have been there at least on 4 separate occasions and have always been served by the same young man. I have nothing against this family owned business, however having been around for such a long time, you think they would have been able to hire outside workers, or even update the ancient interior a little to fix the old displays, ceiling tiles, or flooring. Too much dirt and candy bits stuck to floor corners, and dust hanging on old glass block windows. You can still retain the vintage look while making things look nice and clean! Great candy just isn't enough to operate a business anymore, and I believe this needs to be recognized in order for the shop to attain a clean, healthy candy making and selling environment. read more

Yes to just about everything here. They're super friendly and almost all of their food is delcious. i would highly recommend the cookies and cream fudge, the almond bark, and the turtle style fudge. This is the BEST fudge "Up North". We've been coming to the Harbor Springs area for 30 years and pass by every other fudge shop for Howse's. I just love that it's family owned - check out the photos of the family members over the decades. Great turtles and caramels, but for me it's all about the fudge. An absolute gem of a fudge and chocolate shop. Family run and owned third generation business in downtown Harbor Springs. I take the opportunity to support them every chance I get, particularly since Kilwin's opened up down the street and is in essence a national franchise. Lovely family-owned shop with good caramels and excellent caramel apples. However, DO NOT SHIP. They simply don't send out what you've purchased. And then you can call and tell them your shipment never arrived, and they will apologize and say they're sending it out again, and it simply doesn't happen. Definitely stop in for the wonderful fresh fudge & candies, but don't get snookered into having them ship anything to your friends & associates. It doesn't seem like a scam, it just seems like they're incompetent (and maybe a little bit like a scam). read more

I have loved this shop practically ever since I can remember. The fudge is delicious, and there are so many different kinds to choose from. The dark chocolate peanut brittle is my new fav! But the reason I want to review them is the incredibly wonderful job they did helping me with my son's wedding goodies last summer. I needed some for the rehearsal dinner, and some for the goody bags. They even constructed the little paper containers I'd bought online, and put the rehearsal dinner goodies in my little white lace bags. I have been buying Howse's taffy apples for over 30 years! Since I no longer live in Harbor Springs, MI, I can still order their apples and send them to friends and relatives. They are fabulous Granny Smith Apples with thick carmel, and/or added walnuts or pecans on the carmel. These apples are good all year round, but really special as a Halloween Treat.You can send them to your son or daughter in college anytime (Be sure to send enough for others where they live).
