I had a wonderful hand-made conch ceviche salad here one day for a mid-afternoon snack. I walked down toward the docks near Zachary Taylor park and sat on a bench to eat it with my wife. Very reasonably priced and Bahamian. Their hot sauces were wonderful and I absolutely loved the owners, they were Steelers, Dolphins and Patriots fans! My advice to the owners is to paint the inside of their store a nice coral pink color to brighten it up. And play up the Bahamian connection! It's a wonderful thing to see in Key West. I do feel if I was a local I'd go here for my daily needs, too, though it is more like a bodega than a full grocery store. Holy moley this is the best conch salad ever! A local overheard my husband saying he wanted some and was wondering where to go, and she said just walk down a block, make a left, go down and hit Johnson's. We'd just left the Hemingway house and figured we'd check it out. Great idea! Great conch salad, nice little Mom & Pop store with friendly service. I wish we'd had more time. This is one of those family-owned businesses built up with pride, you can tell. Their daughter's graduation picture was on the wall and it was just so fitting. This was definitely a hidden Jewel. I love Bahamian conch salad. I especially like it when it's prepared by a native Bahamian. This grocery store had several options for traditional Bahamian items. The couple who owns the store was very friendly. The cab driver suggested to spot when we asked for conch salad. This was a great option. The bowl of conch salad was freshly made as we waited. The bowl only cost about $13 and was well worth it with all of the Conch that was in it. There was also an option for a spicier version of the conch salad that was given to you on the side. Old school Key West...conch salad to compete with Bahamas. Five star little grocery! Sweetest, most authentic couple running this joint! Stoped by to grab a quick bottled water and left 15 minutes later after enjoying a nice chat with the owners and local customers. Noted a local buying a gorgeous bowl of conch salad and I could not stop thinking about it. Rolled back in the following day to treat ourselves to a bowl of that salad and now we still can't stop talking about how GOOD that darn conch salad was. It wasn't just a conch salad...it had a bonus.... We were on a quest for the best conch fritters in the Keys and sadly, we were so disappointed in the multiple fritters we sampled throughout the Keys. Johnson's conch salad was garnished with two of the BEST fritters we have ever had. (This was the bonus, y'all)! The portion of salad was so huge, came in under 14 bucks, gave us food euphoria and then had those amazing fritters tooth-picked on top. Anyone that misses this little Key West gem which is just a block or so off of Whitehead is a sucker for missing the REAL Key West. We started our search for Bahamian Conch Salad on our trip through the Keys at Alabama Jack's in Key Largo. It shouldn't even be called conch salad (awful). We also tried it at Half Shell Raw Bar. This was better, but not perfect. Perfection was found at Johnson's Grocery! It's an old school corner grocery store across from Blue Heaven. It is run by a sweet couple. The conch salad was amazing! It is just like we used to get under the bridge in Nassau! It's $13 for a bowl and worth every penny! The even gave us 3 delicious conch fritters on the side. Comes with hot sauce and lime juice on the side as well as lime and orange wedges so you can season it on the side.
