My husband has bought some beautiful chairs in 1984, they held up thru many years of use. One was broken and I had someone else fix and reupholster them. It was a disaster! I have a 50's Swedish Modern chair that had seen better days. I took it to all the best Upholstery places in Austin, who undoubtedly promised to do a bang-up job. The estimates ranged from $450 - $1800 and i just about shit my pants. Since I drive by S. 1st every day- i stopped in to John's Upholstery - who estimated the job @$150. I reluctantly handed over my beautiful chair and the fabric. One week later, I had a perfectly upholstered new chair- including new foam (this was billed EXTRA at all the other places). Sitting on my brand new restuffed couch cushions as I type and I'm so happy. Thank you John's for breathing new life into my droopy sofa and chair. Instead and buying something new I was able just to get new foam cushions. And you got it done in one day! After getting a crazy $850 estimate from another place (for only three new foam cushions), I searched Yelp for help and found John's. This place may not be fancy, and Google maps has the wrong address (it's actually 1606 Stassney) but they were a heck of a lot cheaper than the other guys. Plus they stayed late to get it done in one day. Not sure if I would take a Victorian antique into get reupholstered....but for simple cost saving work, I would check it out. read more

I've used John's for a lot of pieces. There prices are fair, but you need to be very clear with them on what you want. Recently, they did cushions with out the trim/band piece and they looked awful. I had to buy new fabric and it was frustrating. Also, I think they tend to over stuff the cushions. So...use them, just be diligent. read more

I just had the pillows for my sofa re-stuffed and am really pleased with the work done by John's Upholstery. The business was a little hard to find because it is a workshop behind a house. They looked at the pillows on Tuesday, gave me a quote and said they would try to have them done by Friday. I had my Crate & Barrel sofa cushions re stuffed with denser foam. Richard and John steered me to just the right thickness and density. They did a great job! 6 cushions cost @$300 mostly because the seat cushions were deeper than most. I definitely recommend the shop. I spent weeks and weeks pricing and looking for places to have some chair cushions reupholstered. I was so frustrated with pricing near between $600-$900 for 4 cushions and an estimate of 8-10 weeks for the job to get done. I finally found John's Upholstery and decided to give it one more go. They gave me a real and decent price and a time frame of two weeks. I was so relieved. I left the cushions and fabric there that day. Not only did John's do an amazing job but they completed the work in about 4 days. No frills, no BS, just good and honest work. Our looooong (almost 9 feet) couch's upholstery was shot. My wife took the measurements to one recommended place that told her: (1) 20-22 yards of fabric would be needed; (2) the job would take two weeks; and (3) it would cost $950, more if any "extras" needed to be done. John's: (1) 15 yards of fabric would be needed; (2) it would take 5 days, maybe a week; (3) it would cost $750 (their base price is $675, but because of the length, he charged a little more), and the only extra charge would be if we needed new foam. They looked the couch over and determined the foam was in good shape but needed to be wound with some batting. They fixed one of the arms that had some material that had come loose. No extra charge. They got our couch on a Monday, and it was ready that following Saturday (five days), it cost $200 less than their competitors, and they did a BEAUTIFUL job. read more

Richard and John made this right for me and I'm ugrading my review. They did a good job on the chair and, now that all is said and done, I'm satisfied with the end result. The original problem was a misunderstanding, which happens & which I can understand. Their initial handling of the situation stressed me out, so that cost them a stronger recommendation. We visited Johns to get advice and pricing for recovering 6, 45 y/o dining room chairs which also had failed foam and webbing. The chairs are a bit more complex than usual because they have a tufted pillow back with edge cording. Johns gave a reasonable quote for the entire project, picked up and dropped off the chairs, and got it done by the promised time. The choice of fabrics was huge. but we were guided towards a high quality fabric, priced lower than virtually identical fabrics. The work is impeccable, every bit a good as the original chairs. In fact, the seat foam is a slight bit more dense, and much more comfortable. We would go nowhere else. This is craftsman work. read more

Totally impressed with John and his guys. I we decided to reupholster our large loveseat. So I got on yelp.com and called John on a Saturday evening thinking I would get his voicemail. Shockingly he answered and was able to get me a price over the phone via some pictures I texted him within about 15 minutes. We grabbed our material on Sunday and dropped off the chair about 10 AM on Monday. John called me The next day and said the love seat was ready to be picked up. Again I was amazed at how fast they worked. John was headed in my direction with some other pieces of furniture so he offered to drop mine off. Never once asked to be paid to do so. I have a 10-12 year old couch that I love - perfect fabric, well-built frame - but over the years the cushions have gotten pretty out of shape. Family members would joke about sitting on my lumpy old couch. I took the cushions (three seat cushions and three back cushions) to John's Upholstery on a Thursday morning and by Thursday evening I had them back. My couch looks like it is brand new. I actually had trouble fitting all the cushions back on the frame, as they are now so full. The total cost was $350 - way less expensive than buying a new couch. This is definitely the way to go. I had John's Upholstery recover a couch of ours when they were on South 1st, about a year and a half ago. I took them a vintage Mexican blanket to cover the main seat. They did a beautiful job, really even better than i thought it could look. They did it very quickly and I was shocked at the low price. I had brought it to a few other places before and the cost was going to be outrageous. We have gotten so many compliments on the couch. I live in Marble Falls and shopped around for a reasonable place to have my chair upholstered. I found John's gave me a reasonable quote. My chair is an over-stuffed chair with tufting and piping. I had my infiniti factory seat installed. First I asked if it need additional padding to installed it. The idiots installed padding over the entire seat and it was puffed up like a balloon. Later I noticed that they had scratched my door satin trim. I brought it to their attention of course they denied it. The idiots took it to the back and but the buffer on the satin chrome and and it worst. Then they looked and me and told me they were trying to help me. Excuse me. What idiot would put a buffer to a satin chrome and pad a seat to the point it does match the other seats. Only idiots. Professional? I think not. read more
