Would give zero stars if possible, want to warn others. I came in about a year ago to get three dresses altered for a work trip, one had a stuck zipper, one needed to be let out at the hips, and one needed to be taken in at the top. The cost was about $100 total. Reasonable for the work absolutely, but I ended up paying $100 to destroy $500 worth of dresses. I don't know how they were butchered so terribly, the zipper was replaced and put on completely crooked, the dress from Reformation that was let out at the hips looked like it had been blindly ran though the machine, and the third dress looked taped down. The second two had a bunch of loose threads all over. When trying them on at home I was practically in tears, and came back in to see what happened. The lady (owner maybe) told me someone else had worked on the dresses and she apologized and said she would fix them. Keep in mind at this point I was leaving in a few days ( admittedly the time crunch was on my end, I originally brought the three dresses in two and a half weeks before leaving and explained the timeline) so she said she would fix them herself. When all was said and done, the one that needed the zipper fixed was still crooked and went from fitting me like a glove to bunching in the back, the hips on the second dress were uneven and weirdly pointy (see picture) and the third one was rough, had loose threads, but overall was not terrible. I was offered no refund. This is the worse service I have experience. I had to scramble to find new dresses in short notice for my trip and ended up spending much more money than I had budgeted. Please save yourself and avoid this place at all costs. read more

Went there by a recommendation of a friend and unfortunately came out very disappointed. I put in a pair of jeans to shorten and take in the waist; little did I know when taking in the waist you should also take in the rest of jeans, and she did not do that. When I came to pick up the pants and saw the rest of the jeans were so wide and big, I asked about how she took them in, and she said it's another $20.00 if I want her to do the rest of the job. I explained to her that since she is the professional, she should have explained to me initially that the rest of the pants will be unproportionally big. She said she understood, and she learned for the future, but she won't fix the rest of the jeans anymore. When I told her it is hard to take jeans that were already fixed to someone else to fix them, she did not care at all and just insisted she is not going to fix them anymore. If you do go there, double check what she is going to do with your clothes so there won't be any disappointing confessions upon pick up. read more

After using the tailor service for over 25 I made one inquiry about a possible omission of work! Oh boy, bad call. You would have thought it was personal attack, questioning their/her work. Bottom line, in order to not have a confrontation, I walked, took my belongings ( that I paid for and yet the work wasn't done,) so as not to make a bigger issues, Just an FYI BTW, very difficult to work with people who hear but don't listen read more

I have been going to John's tailor since it's original girard Ave location. Although it has changed around to a few different locations within La Jolla, they have always been reliable in getting the requested job done. I am always greeted with a smile and a hype crew while dressing and trying on things to alter. Always done on time and accommodates rush jobs when urgent. Their new location on Eads is also very convenient as there is more parking in the area. Definitely recommend for all your tailoring needs. read more

I absolutely loved John's Tailor! They were so reliable and made an "emergency" situation super easy to navigate. I was leaving for a wedding and trying on my outfits beforehand, finding out that a jumpsuit that I was going to wear was a little too big. I panicked, knowing that I had a flight in only a few days, and John's was the perfect place to go. Christy was able to alter the jumpsuit in only two days, and it looked absolutely amazing! The prices are very fair and I was actually surprised that it didn't break the bank for this high quality. I have a feeling I'm going to be going to her for a VERY long time. read more

Great small business that has been open nearly 40 years. Pant hems (including denim jeans) are only $8 a pair, lowest price in town. The owner and tailor John, originally from Hong Kong, was a pleasure to interact with, with his dry sense of humor. I took in four pairs of pants earlier this month and was pleased with the results. Will definitely return. Tip: the shop has moved to a new location in an alleyway off Pearl so call ahead although there is a sign at the old spot. The new location has dedicated parking out front and is a short walk from Ogden's dry cleaners. read more

I have been taking stuff to Christy (John's Tailor Shop) for probably 5 plus years and am very happy with her work. In addition to simple tailoring (adding zippers, shortening pants, etc.) she's made my grandkids' Karate suits, special stuffed animals, and most recently a set of entire sofa slipcovers (6 cushions and 5 backs) without a pattern. The worst tailor experience I've ever had. They charged triple what the cost of the item was to take in a hem and of course never quoted the price from the get go. Hours seem to be whenever they decide they want to start and be done so we couldn't pick up our items by the time we needed them. Woman was very unhelpful and wouldn't explain why the cost was more than the item itself. She just kept saying labor... So many better tailors in La Jolla, don't waste your time or money here. read more

John's is the Best value in town!! My husband and I have been going here for years now. Since I'm all of 5"2 I constantly need things hemmed or sleeves shortened. Cristie is amazing with a watchful eye. I brought in a patterned blouse with a bell sleeve and she pointed out to make the pattern of the sleeves match. My husband has his suits altered Which is not an easy job. They come back fitting well and they don't charge an arm and a leg. read more

I have been coming here since I was in high school. (for at 10 years) John and his family are very nice. Its a decent price for alterations and the best priced in town. For the most part i'm generally satisfied with his work. I do note that one pair which i've kept the bottom--the hem was a bit too much and kind stands up. however, for the most part, I say I give him my confidence when going to alter my designer jeans. read more

I have been going to John's Tailor shop for twenty years. I buy expensive clothes and do not want to take any chances of mistakes regarding hem lengths and other common alterations. Up until recently, I thought John could do no wrong. However, the last three times I have taken something in to be altered, it was done incorrectly! I just tried on a pair of silk Ralph Lauren pants in which I had John hem, and the length of one leg is noticeably longer that the other! I've had it! Going to try Kiki's. read more

I went here to get a couple of "premium" denim jeans hemmed. They did a good job and it was fairly cheap too. $10 for each pair with an original hem, $8 for regular. Much better than when I do it myself and you can't really tell that they were altered. read more

My son was down from Los Angeles, needed a pair of slacks altered for tonight...it was 1:00 on a Saturday and John was closing, as usual, at 2:00. This place is great. Very cheap for the work they do, very honest and straightforward. I used to go here (before an international move) to get dress pants and jeans repaired all the time, as I tend to be pretty hard on my clothes. They would always be very careful with their evaluation, let me know exactly what they were going to do, and have it done well and on time for dirt-cheap prices. I can't say much about their higher-end work, but they've always exceeded my expectations for the work I've had them do. I wish I could find a place like this in Vancouver.
