Tailoring Express is reliable and meets expectations when it comes to quality tailoring. I asked for my formals dress (two layers) to be hemmed a couple inches shorter at the bottom, and they got it done around a week later in perfect quality. The pricing is definitely cheaper than your average department store. However, I do think it is a bit pricy than normal Vietnamese tailor places in lower socioeconomic status communities outside of La Jolla. It was $40 (Nordstrom Rack's quote was roughly $50-$60). They gave me a discount most likely because I spoke a little Vietnamese and am a student! At other smaller Vietnamese places though, the prices would be a bit cheaper (but maybe I'm just being nit-picky). Also, I asked for a dress shirt to be ironed and they initially were going to charge me $10 until they lowered the price to $5. Very sweet Vietnamese couple and I appreciated the sincerity and kindness from them! read more

Really great hidden place in the second floor of this Governor plaza! I needed a bridesmaid skirt to be hemmed for my sisters wedding in January, but with 3 layers, you can only imagine how expensive tailoring would be at a Nordstrom or any other chain store - I can tell you now it would've been at least $100. Van graciously offered to do the job for $35!! She was extremely sweet and finished the work within 2 weeks - only because I was not in a rush with a month and a half to go. The skirt fell just short of the floor, which is exactly what I had asked for. I will definitely be telling my friends about this shop and will definitely come back again for any of my tailoring needs! I asked her to tighten the waist of my new and beautiful shirt, but unfortunately, things didn't go well. My skirt had a layer underneath it and a zipper on the side. She removed the layer, but never returned it to me. Moreover, when she replaced the zipper, her work was quite sloppy. When I brought up the issues and asked her to fix them, she acted as if the underlying layer had never been there and denied touching the zipper. You could clearly see the new stitches, but she refused to admit that they're hers. She didn't make any effort to rectify the situation, which was quite disappointing. Overall, it was a horrible experience. So disappointed and frustrated! She basically ruined my skirt! Now I understand why they only accept cash for the payment! read more

Needed a pair of jeans hemmed and a friend recommended this place. Conveniently located in a parking lot with sprouts and other stores, it's an upstairs, small suite. The lady I met with and spoke with is super sweet. She stated the fee would be $10 for the jeans. I tried them ok real quick and she pinned and marked where they were to be hemmed and asked me if that was a good length and I agreed it was. The jeans were ready two days later, as promised and she seemed flexible with the timing (if I needed them sooner, she seemed like she totally could have/would have made it happen, which is nice!) I've been going here for my tailoring needs for a few months now. They do a pretty good job, especially for basic things like hemming and fixing loose seams. The price is really fantastic ($16 for lengthening $5 for loose hems), but the work can be a bit sloppy. Definitely don't bring complicated tailoring there (ie letting out width on suite pants - a very complex job which they performed poorly on), but highly recommended for every day basic tailoring. read more

Process is pretty quick. I went in on Monday and got the dress on Thursday. Took only two days (I wasn't in a hurry so the timing didn't matter to me). I went in asking for a hem on a dress. The lady told me to go into the fitting and try on the dress. I told her how much I wanted it to be shortened and she worked with me. Her initial price was $50 or $60 for a two layer dress. I asked her in Vietnamese if she would be able to reduce the price down some more since I am a college student. She agreed and changed the price down to $40. I would definitely ask the ladies if they can reduce the price down a little if you feel like it's a little too steep. :) read more

I would make a list of its pros, but I'm so excited that I think I'll just type stream-of-conscious-like: Here goes: I went to Tailoring Express, really small shop in shopping center off Governor, a couple doors down from the Henry's, except it's upstairs near the Kumon Tutoring Center! Had 2 pairs of jeans I wanted original hemmed, got the measurements taken (I have no hips, therefore, my pants always are too short or too long) and was told they would be done by Monday. Impatience got the best of me, and I found out I had an event I had to attend in which the pants I was getting altered would be perfect, so I went back to see if they could expedite the process. Some convincing pleas were made, and she agreed and said she would call. I went on a run, and got back, checked my phone at 4:15 to hear a message saying the order was done, but the shop closes at 4. She called at 3:22! I called the shop, no answer. Alas, all of a sudden my phone started to ring. She was calling me back! Can I be there in 10 minutes? Yeaaah I can. Long, confusing story short (I think I may be ready for this list now): 1) Asked for rush service a day after dropping off 2) Was notified when I could pick them up. 3) Store stayed open later for me to come pick them up. 4) Got a surprised look when I gave an extra big tip. SURPRISED? If I were her, and hadn't gotten some extra dough, I would have just kept my hand out until extra monies found their way there... $16.50 for two pairs of originally hemmed, expedited denims + EXTRA BIG TIP. ...i can't believe you're still here. read more

My brother-in-law told me about this place after I've had so many other tailors/alteration places screw up on my pants and jackets. This is the best secret in alteration places in San Diego! I've been looking for a tailor that can make my clothes look professionally finished, not like my mom altered them. I tell you, this place can do jean hems to match exactly with the original hemlines. They've also done my leather jackets, which are vintage jackets from my parents, and she made them look like they were meant for me. Being petite, I need alterations all the time. I love this place b/c not only do they do a great job altering, but they're fast too. Most all my clothing is done in a week. I went there to have my wedding dress altered - VERY SIMPLE alterations, length and cups sewn in...we dropped it off in plenty of time, told them when we needed to pick it up and after picking it up from them, the cups were still PINNED to the inside of the dress (which was shocking enough) and after putting the dress back on with my high heels, we realized NOTHING was altered to the length of the dress. They were happy enough to take our money for work they never completed!!! And when my mom went back to confront them about their LACK OF WORK (because I was on my honeymoon) they admittedly gave her $30 or the $70 back that she paid. I WAS FURIOUS. This is the best revenge...preventing others from literally WASTING money. My dress must have just hung on a hook for weeks while NO ONE bothered to touch it other than to hand it back and take money in return. RIP OFF ARTISTS AT THEIR BEST! read more

I found out on a Sunday that I had an interview Thursday. Scrambled around to put together an appropriate outfit and realized I needed to get a blazer tailored. The awesome yelp reviews drew me to Tailoring Express and after my experience, I needed to write my own! I brought in the blazer Monday afternoon and was promptly greeted. The woman did her pinning and wrote me out the pickup ticket. I explained to her that I needed the work done by Wednesday evening and she said it would be no problem. The total was $14 and I don't think there as an extra charge for a rush job. I picked up the blazer today and it looks great! I will definitely come back when I need other garments altered! I definitely recommend this place for people who are just terrible at sewing. I came here very hesitant because I didn't know what to expect. I had a romper where the zipper would get stuck because of a very tiny hole. They said they would have to replace the whole zipper, which scared me because I was afraid it would make it more expensive. But it ended up only being $10, which is super cheap! I then had an unusual case where it was my backpack that needed stitching. The handle at the top was ripping. I brought it in and the next week they had it perfectly sewn and I couldn't even tell where it was. I then came in with another backpack where the bottom had holes and the cup holder nets at the side was ripped as well. She just brought up the nets and put a second heavy duty fabric on the bottom of my backpack. It works wonders and I can wear it again for school! It wasn't even that expensive at $20 (it needed A LOT of work). Just be sure to bring cash with you! They don't take cards! But they're fast, reliable, and it is such a nice area to stop by. Great tailoring place. I went to this place based on the reviews because I needed a one day tailoring place. I dropped a dress off on Thursday and needed it back by Friday at 5pm she said I could come for it Friday by 4pm. I was a little worried since the dress was delicate and had a lining but I couldn't even tell where she had done the work. And it was only $14! This was a 20min+ drive for me but well worth it. I went to Tailoring Express because of yelp and I am bit disappointed. 1) The price for original hemmed is not as described per previous users, maybe they raise the price it is now $14 dollar each pair 2) The original hemmed is definitely "only the hemmed" part. They cut out the hem and restitch it themselves. They do it a very funny way unlike the one that I usually go Lucy in Irvine( it is a bit far to drive, so I give this place a try). Therefore, if you are looking for the original hem and original stitching, this is not the place. Lucky I bring some cheaper jeans to try so I was not as angry as I can be if it is my expensive jeans. Ultimately, they have their "own" definition of original hem and it may not be what you have in mind, definitely not original stitching and their workmanship is just OK. read more

After reading positive reviews I decided to take two pairs of Levi's jeans to Tailoring Express to get hemmed. One of pair I wanted to keep the original hem and the other cut and stitch. I bought two pairs of shoes so they can estimate the length. I dropped of the jeans on a Thursday and picked them on a Monday. When I picked up both of my jeans in and the length was spot on. When I got home I looked at the work up close. I noticed a few things. The original hemmed job didn't look as clean as I wanted. The stitching wasn't straight and looked a bit sloppy. However, the cut and stitch jeans looked good. Positives: - Ladies that work there seem very friendly. - The turn around time was pretty good. - Cut and stitch job looked clean and neat. - Spot on measurement. Negatives - The original hem job wasn't straight and sloppy. - Using the original hemmed cost a little more than the cut and stitch job. - Cost more to hemm with original. Overall, I would go back for just a cut and stitch job and not for an original hemmed job. I wouldn't take expensive designer jeans to them though. Total cost for both jeans was $22. read more

Was very pleased at the quality of their work. Got two jeans hemmed, one with original. She told me she was going to make it slightly longer so that after I washed my jeans, they would shrink just enough to barely touch the floor. When I got my jeans, they were a little long. Because 7 jeans are made with spandex and cotton, I was worried they might not shrink. But after they came out of the dryer, they were PERFECT! I could not be happier. Straight to the point. Come here to take in cheap jeans and good work pants to get hemmed here. I have taken all of my Express dress pants here and they have come out great! They are timely as well. I say if you're not in a hurry they'll be done in a few days. The two seamstresses are truly grateful when you're not asking for a rushed time table. I am fortunate enough not need to have any rush jobs as others have denoted. I noticed not all expedited items are going to be done exactly the way one customer desires. I also like the location. Easy to get to, no issue with parking and you can go to Sprouts/Trader Joe's. It can be annoying to get to this plaza right after work on a weekday with the high school near by (if you're coming from La Jolla).
