I will be forever grateful to John's Custom's Stairs. Every single one of these guys were angels. My husband had a fall and we needed to get railings installed quickly in order for him to return home after a hospital and a too short rehab stay. John agreed to move up the installation and Anthony worked with me to get exactly what I wanted in short visits because I had to run up to the hospital/rehab early every morning. The work that they did, the quality of the materials were all excellent. The team is responsive with a sense of humor. You can tell that they really enjoy their job and helping people. As another review described, received incredibly rude service from these guys. Anthony came and out and gave me an estimate pre-Covid. He was pretty brusque, but I chalked that up to personality. After everything shut down, we had to put our stair railing project on hold. I called the shop back and spoke with Anthony again. He was trying to get an idea of the job, as it had been a while, and was clearly unable to remember the work. I tried to describe everything to the best of my ability, but as I'm not a finish carpenter, didn't understand all the technical jargon he was asking for. I live a few blocks away, and told him he could swing by if he just wanted to take a second look to make things easier, as he was getting progressively more frustrated and surly with me. He refused and chose to shout at me and behave like an angry teenager. Unfortunately I've heard that this shop does great work, but I'm not hiring someone who thinks screaming at potential customers on the phone is a good way to do business. We hired John's Custom Stairs to replace our front door. They ordered the door of our choice, installed the hardware we provided them, and completely rebuilt the door frame and transom (we did the painting and finishing ourselves). They did an excellent job; showed up when they said they would; were friendly, helpful, and easy to communicate with; and cleaned up perfectly when they were done. In short: True professionals, with old school craftsmanship at reasonable rates. I recently contacted John's custom stairs for 2 new stairs. One floating wood and another standard in my basement. After calling them the estimator, Anthony was kind enough to accommodate my schedule and meet me first thing in the morning. He showed up on time, and took DETAILED measurements explained a few issues (with older Philly homes this is an EVERY TIME occurrence) and was able to give me a couple of options. He quoted me a price and said I could swing by the shop to take a look at samples of some finished products. I went to the shop and met with John who was kind, professional and funny. (Totally someone you could have a beer with.) He showed me a few finished products and I gave a deposit and was told it would take a few weeks. The stairs were completed on time and the installation team was again professional, on time and diligent. They treated my property with respect, completed the job on schedule and cleaned up after themselves. The finished products were both sturdy and beautiful and everyone compliments them. Will be calling them for a railing next week and probably another stairway in a few months. Do yourself a favor and leave stairs to these true professionals. read more

This is the company to go with...the railing they installed in my house is beautiful...they know exactly what they are doing... their prices are great and they were very quick throughout the process...they came out the same day I called them for an estimate, took 1 1/2weeks to come out to install and took 1 1/2 days for them to install/finish...very happy...we will be back soon...I shopped around for a railing company and decided to go with these guys...thank God I did!!! These guys were pretty rude & impatient answering basic questions about how the finished job would look and cost. They rushed me for a deposit and used technical jargon I could not understand and got impatient if I asked for clarity. I went back and forth several times to their shop and the property because they initially would not visit the property ( a few blocks away) to give an estimate. I even e-mailed them some pics so we could have a common dialogue and they eventually did visit the property but were obtuse in explaining anything. When I asked to see a photograph to aid me in understanding how it would look-so I could understand what they were talking about- they acted impatient like I was being difficult. They showed me multiple styles and options so quickly I could not grasp everything and the price kept fluctuating and the paperwork "documenting" our dialogue/estimate was difficult to understand, handwritten, and on some internally used form that had no meaning to a layman. They seem oblivious to the fact not everybody will plunk down a deposit without understanding how the finished product would look or cost and resented my questions. I really tried to work with them so I could use them again...I was a potential repeat customer. I flip houses...but the man finally shouted: "Don't tell me how to do my job!". Moments before I explained I thought the communication between myself and the staff was not great and the back and forth could been avoided with better dialogue and understanding from their end that not everybody understands this stuff. He asked me to leave and handed me back my check for politely saying this. Interestingly enough, they were complaining about a another customer who also asked a lot of questions while I was there. SUMMARY: They appear competent judging from the huge wood shop but they rush you for a deposit, were reluctant to give an on-site estimate or explain anything. They were impatient and rude...even after my sincere attempts at dialogue/ understanding. If you are the type to blindly open your checkbook and leave the rest to chance with zero or impatient dialogue, reluctant on-site estimate, & unhelpful documentation - these are the guys for you. read more

These guys are incredibly rude. As a customer who has been taken advantage of by contractors in the past my antennas went up when John requested payment, sight unseen. I have never heard of a company giving a quote based on what the customer says they need so I asked "What's the plan If I pay the price you're quoting me in advance and you get there and you notice something you didn't anticipate?", which commonly occurs with contractors and "What happens if you do not meet your timeline". John's response was "you're asking too many stupid questions" and not to contact him anymore. My questions were asked because he gave me a one and a half to two week turnover estimate and I'm assuming they forgot they told me they were now telling people a three week turnover for stairs because customers were very upset with them for not meeting their deadlines. Good luck to anyone who uses this company. I would be really nervous hiring them. I have never heard of a company requesting payment in full let alone pricing a Job over the phone, sight unseen. First I purchased a custom stair case from John's. They came out to do the estimate right away, answered all of our questions (lots) and went over many options. John and Anthony were great! About two years later when we needed a new front door and vestibule door the experience was even better. They were not the cheapest but certainly the most competent and friendly. There was an issue with the one of the doors. Instead of arguing with us about whether we ordered the wrong thing they agreed to make it right asap at no additional cost. The guys doing the installation were very fast and knew exactly what they were doing. If replacing a front door or stairs in Philly this is the only place to go! read more

John's Custom Stairs just completed a project for me (getting rid of really dated wrought iron railing and installing the perfect wood newel post, balusters, and hand rail) and although I rarely write reviews, I always wish there were more reviews out there, so here goes. I did my homework beforehand and obtained a number of different quotes and John's was the best. I also spoke with a couple of contractors in the City that recommended John's without hesitation. John and other members of his team (Anthony, Ralph, and some other man who kinda looks like a young Jeff Goldblum, I forget his name) were super helpful and informative, patiently answering my numerous questions and making me feel comfortable with my choices. I had a floating wood staircase that was over 30 years old. While coming down the stairs one of the steps came out of the horse. I called John and explained my situation, he was on it and sent someone out to check the integrity of my stairs. I was provided a few different option to rectify my situation. However, my husband and I decided to have a new floating stair case made by John's custom stairs. John sent one of his employees back to my home to make sure that no other steps would come out of the horse and my husband and I were safe. I was told about 2 to three week to get the new stairs. Well to my surprise,safety, and delight they were ready within a few days, John was concerned for our safety. Anthony, Obe and Paul were here this morning, my stairs were installed and look beautiful. The guys were polite and took special care of my hardwood floor. Very professional guys and answered any question that I had. Anthony the guy that came to measure is a funny guy and made me feel at ease with the process. I recently had construction in my home...everything was gutted. I had no luck... problem after problem with the contractors. It seemed like no one took pride in their work nor were they reliable. At the end of the process, I hired John's Custom Stairs to install banisters from my basement to the 3rd floor. Well, my luck finally turned around. John's was hands-down the most professional contractor I dealt with. First of all, the men came exactly when they were scheduled...I was shocked! John estimated that the job would take 2 & 1/2 days, and it did...another shocker! Lastly, their work was amazingly beautiful!!! I was beyond thrilled with the outcome! I would not search for any other contractor if you need steps or banisters in your home...John's is the best!!! read more
