I was in search of a pomegranate tree to accent my cottage garden and Johnny's was recommended to me. With the help of Johnny's wife (I didn't get her name!), I found the perfect tree for the space. She was extremely helpful and friendly, and we had a nice long visit about life and everything under the sun. What a wonderful, friendly place! The price was right -- $78 for a 15-gallon tree about five feet tall -- and Henry put the tree into my car for me. I'll certainly be back in the spring! read more

I came here because Kellogg's website stated that Johnny's carried the G&B Organics Compost. I didn't see it. Maybe I should have asked and that was my mistake. I was hoping for a bigger selection of flowers and vegetables. I was a little underwhelmed. Their website mentions they have vegetables, but none were found. They do have a few flowering shrubs but there are mainly shrubs, trees, and they have a succulent section. I asked the woman at the check out if they would be getting more perennials. Her response - "You mean flowers? *smile*".....her tone and response struck me as odd. it felt condescending (like I don't know what I'm talking about but also yes I do mean flowers lol a more polite response may have been "what are you specifically looking for?"). You don't always remember what someone said, but you will always remember how they made you feel. I was glad to see they had blueberries. I bought one, and I asked if she recommended to grow in a container or in-ground. She said either or is fine and was helpful in that she advised they need acidic soil. *PS I researched and a lot of resources state that growing in a container makes managing their pH more manageable and allows you to control the pH better.* she also offered me hand sanitizer after our transaction, which was nice. I probably won't come back bc of the limited selection tbh. read more

I paid for 1 sm/med sized tree to be planted they called dig alert to make sure they wouldn't hit any gas lines etc. he told me they'd have no problem planting the tree but when they showed up the owner Johnny refused to plant the tree got in my contractors face & was so rude , so my guys are gonna take care of it I'm never going back there. read more

There just isn't a better nursery in the inland Empire. The people are amazingly helpful, friendly and they have huge inventory at the best prices. They offer advice on how to keep your garden organic, know which species do best in your particular microclimate, how much maintenance demands to expect from different plants and how to conserve water. I always leave there much happier than when I arrived. read more

I've been going to Johnny's for several years and have been pleased with everything I purchased. I've bought trees, a lime and a peach and both are doing wonderfully despite the wind. They are knowledgeable and fall all over themselves to be helpful. I can call and ask for help and am never disappointed. My yard is full of lilies, agapanthus, photenia, and others. Yeah, I've killed a few but its my fault and the prices are so good, I just go back and get another for $3-6 dollars. You can get a warranty at the big box stores but you will pay four times the price. They have some nice veggie starters and some good variety. They have some nice exotics under the big shade cloth but they don't carry annuals. They are a little out of the way but worth the stop. read more

AVOID THIS BOGUS "Going out of Business Sale!" In April this year I bought several 5 gal. junipers and was charged $15. each. Today I went to the big HALF OFF SALE, and was charged $32.50 for the exact same 5 gal. plant. Yes, I got 1/2 off, but I still paid MORE than before the sale! Based on my experience with Johnny's Nursery, San Timoteo Canyon Rd., Redlands, CA, the following happened to me: It's my understanding of the contract I entered into that I was supposed to receive healthy trees, planted by their crew; however, I don't believe that I received that. After 2 months, one of the trees started to brown and wilt after being planted by Johnny's crew. Tressa, Johnny's wife, came out and gave her opinion on one tree. I then hired an expert in the field, a certified arborist, and in his opinion all six trees were planted too deep. In his opinion, over time every tree could have issues if they are not raised higher in the ground. The owners of Johnny's Nursery have asked us not to contact them further in our attempts to resolve our complaint about the trees. Based on what happened to us, you might want to double-check before you go ahead and engage this company and business. Be aware of what can happen. We paid nearly $4000.00 for 6 large trees including installation by their company and now we have to pay another company to re-plant them according to the arborist findings. read more

Wish I could give ZERO stars. I went here because I am redoing from yard to drought tolerant plants. They will make a design for $250 and then you get $250 credit toward your plant purchase. When I 1st spoke to the lady here, she immediately spouted off 2 rules, one was that you have to pick up your plants within 5 days and I forgot the other rule. I should have ran, but my mistake, I didn't. They have you pay first and then they give you a bucket to walk around a pick out clippings of plants you like. After making 2 passes around the nursery I realized I had very few plants in my bucket and mentioned that to the lady and she said, she'll fill in the plants. I left kind of perplexed because I didn't see the flowery plants that I wanted from the waterwise website, http://watersavinggardenfriendly.com/plant-library/. I am using a turf rebate and have to pick plants that are on their list. But, I didn't come with the list. The lady sent me to look at one of the yards she designed in Redlands. I drove there and looked at and wasn't impressed, it was just covered in mulch with some plants - very basic & boring. So, then wondering if the plants I wanted were actually available I went to another nursery and VOILA, there were all the flowering drought tolerant plants! The man at Moon Valley spent over an hour just walking around the nursery with me talking to me about each plant & tree and answering all my questions. I called Johnny's nursery back, explaining they don't have the flowery drought tolerant plants I want, such as bougainvillea, etc and that I want a refund. She told me bougainvillea just dies, which is weird because I see it in my area. She told me twice that she didn't believe me and it was non-refundable. I explained they hadn't even made my design yet because I hadn't returned with pictures of my yard. I was told it is non-refundable. So, they basically just stole my $250! Buyer beware, read the fine print. And then don't expect them to work with you if you have any issue or provide good customer service! I ended up going with Moon Valley and am happy with my plants. The delivered, planted and guaranteed their trees, etc. They were more expensive, I'm sure, but this was way better than the process & customer service at Johnny's nursery. I ended up spending $1700 and have a yard full of flowering plants and a trees. My local paper has already done one article on my drought tolerant yard and will do a follow-up once it's all the way done and no where in that article will you find me saying anything positive about Johnny's! So Johnny's your bad customer service will end up costing you a lot more than the $250 you got off me because I will be spreading the word to all my friends that are now redoing their yards and they won't be buying from you, either! When a customer calls you with a problem, you should try to work with them instead of calling them a liar! read more

I went to the nursery to look for vegetables and other items to plant in our new garden. The staff there was so very helpful in providing advice and guidance for planting vegetables that we weren't even thinking about. I will be going back next weekend to purchase some trees and probably several more times thereafter. I've also seen posts about the nursery being difficult to find. What horrible experience at this nursery. My daughter went to buy a pepper tree paid for it with ATM $300. Left went down the street saw one that she liked better went back to see about that one it was $1000 way to much! We never loaded up anything in our truck but decided she did not want the one she paid for. Asked the manager for a refund she would not do it,my daughter offered to pay for the charge it would cost her,still no,after rounds of her total RUDENESS she now has a $300 credit at a business that she has no desire to deal with read more

Went here again last week to inquire about having Johnny's Nursery help landscape my front yard. Tressa informed me that they charge $250 to design the landscape, but that $250 will go towards the purchase of the plants for the design. This is so that they are not losing money by designing the landscape and then you taking those plans elsewhere. Tressa asked me to bring in pictures, but I was confused. -Pictures of the plants I like? NO -Pictures on a flash drive? NO Pictures of the current landscape so that she can get a feel for the layout and shade, etc. -Oh! She explained that you will use a bucket and walk around the nursery to grab a piece of the plant you like, then put them in the bucket. At the end she will sit with you and talk about the plants you grabbed and where you want them and where the best place for them would be. If you want a shrub, she'll take you to the shrub plants. Flowers, take you there... I asked about plants I found online that I like, but she said no. She might not grow those plants or not have them. So you have to choose from her current inventory, which is massive by the way! I'm thinking of trying this out as I probably have about $250 worth of plants to buy for my landscape plans. Tressa is the only reason you would need to be a return customer. Her humor and care are refreshing in today's ever daunting commercial world. She is great.....oh and the plants they are fantastic too. We went for 3 fruit trees and left with 8. They genuinely care about your projects and are always willing to help out. My family and I went to Johnny's nearly two years ago when we were new to the Redlands area. They had tons of stuff to choose from and I couldn't believe how knowledgeable they were about the plants and local geography and geology. They were also very generous with their time and advice. We love the plants that we bought from them and they are still growing strong even after moving and transplanting them. I was even more impressed that almost a year later they remembered us and went out of their way to say hi at the Redlands Market Night. We will be going there again this weekend to buy more, and I can hardly wait. read more

We recently moved to the IE from the Midwest and didn't know a lot about gardening in this climate, so we are so glad we visited this nursery. I only wish we had gone there first before buying a bunch of plants at Home Depot and Lowes. The staff at Johnny's were super friendly and knowledgeable, and took time to tell us about what kinds of plants will (or won't) thrive on our sunny patio, and how to take care of them. They even offered to let us bring in samples of our plants that have died or look like they have problems to help us figure out what's going wrong. They have a huge selection of plants and trees for sun and shade, and they don't use a bunch of fertilizers to keep them alive until you buy them, so you can be more confident that they'll survive once you get them home. This place is a hidden treasure! Wish I'd bothered to lookup local nurseries sooner rather than waste money at the big chain stores. Everyone here is warm, welcoming and extremely helpful. We showed up toward closing time with intentions to quickly grab a dozen plants or so for an impromptu mini-landscape project. Tressa greeted us right away, showed us around, looked at photos of our yard, and spent a lot of time helping us pick plants and design our landscape. We never felt rushed. We mentioned that we needed more plants for a separate part of the yard that we hadn't photographed and they recommended coming back with pictures before picking them out (imagine that - no pushy salespeople!). We left with some landscape plans, beautiful, healthy-looking plants and saved a lot of money. Will definitely be back here soon! read more
