Decided to give this temp agency a shot as I was struggling to find a job in Boston after I moved here. Applied online and got a call back from Jen who was very friendly, told me to come take a visit for an interview. The building was very nice, prime location in Financial District. Front desk person asked me to fill out an application and led me to Jen after. Jen was telling me that she has been working at John Leonard for almost 30 years holy moly! She was very professional, knew what she was doing, and sounded like she has a great relationship with their clients (employers). Asked me couple questions about my skills and experience, what I want to do in a long run. After the interview, she explained some of the jobs they have in the system and asked me if any of those spark my interest. Really liked this short term assignment in Cambridge, was places there a week after that interview! Went through many assignments with various employers through John Leonard so far, was a great experience to work with all those employers. John Leonard seems to have a good clientele of employers that would treat you well as long as you do your job! Long story short- no matter what kind of career goals you have, John Leonard will listen to you, learn your story to find a great assignments that fit to your needs and qualification! Review Update 5/16/18: The owner of the company reached out to apologize for the experience I had last week. I have written a response and decided to give the owner an opportunity to try and help me. I'm still befuddled as to how someone with 4 years in the mortgage business and an MBA degree is unable to be helped in a job search. I will update my review of this company once another response is received. The recruiter I spoke with Chris Wallingford sucks. I made a call a week ago and sent my resume and he never called or emailed me back. When I did speak with him I got to "google" job postings, and go directly to job boards. He apparently does recruit in the financial industry, yet told me that my mortgage experience didn't align with finance? WTF... Guess what? The mortgage industry is all about finance genious and your follow up game is lousy. Why don't you try following up and doing your actual job called help people find f***ing jobs. Ive worked with John Leonard for years and have admired and respected the speed and and efficiency in which they can place me into supervisory roles for conferences and conventions. Worked with several of their recruiters over the years and have had no real issues with any of them. Go in perform as expected and you will be offered more opportunities as a result. I must say that I am dumbfounded by any positive review on this agency. I called after a poor experience with another staffing agency and spoke with a man who was rather lovely on the phone. We exchanged pleasantries and then he asked that I send along my resume so we could have a meeting to discuss career opportunities the following Monday. I giddily sent everything along and waited a day or two for a reply. Nothing. I called and was unable to reach the person I had been speaking with. Another email was sent and I once again heard nothing back. The most fabulous part of this story is that when I logged onto my LinkedIn account several days later I saw that the recruiter that I had spoken with had actually viewed my LinkedIn profile several days after I sent the email. So, you can creep me on social media but can't hit "reply"? Smarten up there buddy. Luckily I have found a great job and no longer need their services. If you are looking I'd recommend prowling Craigslist for jobs instead of contacting these people. read more

Not impressed. When I went in, I filled out some paperwork, waited for 5 minutes at the most. Met with a very nice lady that asked me about what I've done in the past, my salary range, and a couple other things that I honestly don't remember. My résumé is pretty beefy - web developer but unemployed - but my salary requirement was very reasonable and well within what a temp agency would offer. She asked my previous salary, and asked if I'm able to pay for my electric, which was weird. I can... And then was told that other people need positions more than I do. I never got any calls back. I guess she didn't understand that I was willing to take small assignments, despite the salary hit? I was out of unemployment, so some is better than nothing. I'm disappointed because of their reputation for pointing people in the right direction for their industry. I was hoping to go more into graphic arts, but... Oh well. I've used John Leonard - Boston on two separate occasions in the past three years, and I can assure you from my experiences with them that they are not only interested in finding gainful employment for their job seekers, but they are also looking to match the best possible candidates with their clients. This is a win-win recipe that exemplifies professionalism at its finest and proves that they are not one in the same with other larger area agencies (which I've used many) that just try to get people placed at whatever cost. A lot of individuals have difficulty looking for meaningful work, but some of those people are not really helping themselves either. No one should leave finding their dream job up to chance; this is why it is important to identify with your placement consultant and communicate effectively what it is you're looking for and what you are qualified for, honestly. There is no need to lie or put up fronts with them regarding your qualifications; it will come out. The important thing is to find the job the best suits you and work hard so that you can grow. I've had an outstanding rapport with my staffing consultant and within two months of first walking into the office I had been placed in an excellent position that both challenged me and rewarded my efforts. It was those results that led me back to John Leonard when the economy plummeted, mainly because I trusted them most to "get the job done." I've worked with a few other agencies, but John Leonard is the best I've found. They actually listen when I tell them what sort of work I'm interested in and I have never felt pressured into taking an assignment, two things which put them above other agencies I have worked with. They send my resume out frequently, have provided me with frequent placements even with my specific criteria, and everyone who answers the phone is, if not immediately helpful, at least courteous. They're a small company, which means, yes, they only started direct deposit a year ago (we all managed to get paid and pay our bills before direct deposit and the internet, fyi) but small companies like JL also will go to bat for you as a person, if you are open and proactive with them. One interviewer told me that JL was the first to respond to her request for resumes (and you're kidding yourself if you think most employers are using only one agency to fill positions, particularly in long-term temp or temp-to-hire), calling me "awesome". While they are excellent and enthusiastic about opportunities for me, and reach out immediately with good news, my one complaint is the lack of follow-up when there is no or bad news. I don't mind following up when I'm asked to once or twice per opportunity as a sort of prod for JL to prod the employer, but when an employer picks someone else, I don't think it's too much to ask for a nearly as prompt response. I've been with them for long enough that I automatically assume the worst when I have to call back after a few days. My last "no", however, came from JL with pretty quick turn around, and I can only hope this trend continues. read more

I was referred to John Leonard by a friend, but I put off actually calling the agency for a few months. I had a not so good experience with another staffing agency in Boston, and I just wasn't sure what I was looking for. However, I should have just stopped whining about not having a job and called them much sooner, because they were great. I went in for a meeting and took a few tests, and right away they called me about potential positions. After only a week or so, they called me about a temp-to-hire position at a public health nonprofit, and I actually went in to interview--I wasn't just plopped into a cubicle and given reams of data to enter. It has worked out beautifully! Also, their office is easy to get to and in a very elegant building downtown. This is by far the worst temp agency I have worked with. I expressed that I am in search for temp work because I am new to the area. I have worked with other agencies who look at other skills and try to see if there is any work that can fit skills you have but this agency doesn't do that. The jobs they have pay very little money. Close to minimum wage. Wtf can you do with $16 in Boston. If you are a college graduate with 10 years of experience. Total waste of time going there. read more

I had a very positive experience with John Leonard. I was in-between jobs and they were excellent about giving me consistent work during this transitional period. Hardly one week went by where I didn't have an assignment. Everyone I worked with, both at the staffing firm and the client companies, was extremely friendly and professional. After a bad experience with another Boston temp agency, I sent my resume to John Leonard and I had an appointment within a week. I met with someone in the temporary department, had a great conversation, took the skills test, and then met with someone in the permanent placement division. In a week, I got a call with my first assignment - two weeks, pay decent for temp work. The job wasn't exciting but the coworkers were nice. Two business days after my assignment ended, the same company wanted me back for another two-week assignment. Overall I had a great experience. I now have a permanent job lined up that starts after Labor Day (which I found on my own), but I know that I'll have extra cash for the next two weeks until the job starts up, which is great. read more

I finally joined Yelp (it's like a lifeline for me - I like to make sure a business is good before I invest my time and/or money) to write a review for John Leonard! This is an excellent agency! (Though I must add that I am a recent graduate and it is the first agency I've ever gone to.) They are attentive and helpful. I have worked thus far with Jennifer on the temp side and Rob on the direct hire side. I can say that both really do work to find you employment and are very communicative and are willing to work to find good fits for all parties involved. I just finished my first temp assignment and it went smoothly. It was a major conference at the BCEC and a John Leonard rep (Lindsay) was there for logistical purposes and to make sure everything was well with both the client and the people temping. I find everyone I have met at JL to be very cheerful, approachable, and helpful. Jennifer was very responsible when I gave her feedback about positions I was turning down, and Rob gives superb advice and feedback. I would definitely recommend them considering what I have heard about other agencies. I will definitely write a couple of follow-up reviews in the future if I continue to work with them. read more

About a year and a half ago I found myself in a job I hated. One of the bosses was abusive and most everyone in the company just went along with it. I went home every night frustrated and often crying...it was miserable. So I contacted John Leonard's Temporary Division Manager Jennifer DeLucia at John Leonard and we had an email discussion about my situation. She (correctly) advised me that leaving a full-time job for the risk of temping was probably not the best way to go. I appreciated her honestly and the time she took with me. She could have led me along and gotten what she could out of me at the detriment of my work and financial situations but she didn't. I stayed at that job a few months longer and ended up quitting without another position. Not the best move but I was fortunate that it all ended up working out. So a few months ago I'm unemployed and the temp-to perm job I had through another agency fell through. I had gone to other agencies, filled out their paperwork, interviewed with their reps, and heard nothing back. I'm still not sure why I didn't connect with John Leonard initially at the time, but when the agencies I was in contact with went on radio silence, I reached out to another handful of agencies, including John Leonard. In the space of less than a week, I had met in person with Jennifer, filled out all the paperwork and such, and immediately started receiving calls and emails from Jennifer and her co-workers regarding possible job opportunities (temp, permanent and temp to perm). Never did I feel pressured or obligated to jump at an opportunity just because it was offered. For me, that's a huge plus. Two weeks after our first meeting I was placed in a temp position as an executive assistant. There were no lofty promises of a definite permanent position as there had been at other agencies. Just the promise of some solid work for a few months and the opportunity to get my foot in the door. Four months later and I'm on week two of my new, full-time, permanent position at the first job John Leonard placed me. Jennifer as well as Staffing Consultant Elyse Gonsalves were supportive of my search, responsive to any questions or issues that came up and, most importantly to me, took an active interest in how I was adjusting as a temp, what I thought of the company, and if I was happy where I was. The people at John Leonard gave me the time and attention all the other agencies I visited promised but never came through with. From the initial email engagement to our meeting in person and all of the follow-up that lead to my placement, they made me feel like they truly wanted me to succeed. This was only highlighted by phone calls and emails from Jennifer congratulating me on my new position and expressing her happiness at my good fortune. I consider myself an extremely qualified candidate with an excellent work history. Unfortunately, finding a job on my own was proving more difficult than I felt it should have. Instead of piling on, the people at John Leonard placed me in an organization where my skills and personality fit quite well. To be fair, my relationship with JL is still ongoing, but I'm already a little disappointed in them. I sent in my resume for a specific temp-to-perm posting they had up, and got an e-mail back the next business day. I made an appointment to go in and meet them, and once I'd arrived (and done the inevitable skills testing), I go back to meet the woman who e-mailed me. Turns out, it was a temp person who had e-mailed me back, and no one seemed to have any idea about the specific position I applied to. The woman I met with even asked me how I had gotten in contact with them! After I met with her, I was given a chance to talk to the direct-hire people who, again, had no idea what position I'd applied for and had to look it up on the website.... only to tell me that the company had decided not to use an agency for the placement the day before. Then, despite me having told them that the position was EXACTLY what I was looking for, she didn't tell me what the company was so I could find it on my own. I understand that making your commission is important, but this is my life -- if I'm telling you a position is perfect for me and you can't help me get it, then have some human decency and tell me how to get it on my own. I've also met with other staffing agencies over the last week and I have to say, at this point I would recommend Manning Associates or Kennison over JL, simply because they seemed to be actually interested in getting me a job and helping me as a human being rather than churning me out for temp assignments at $10 an hour. read more

It's been a few years since I worked with John Leonard, but my experience was more than merely satisfactory. I went in and met with both the temp and permanant jobs divisions. By the next day, I had a temp assignment (3 weeks). I didn't go a full week without an assignment or two. They also set up interviews for me within my field. They gave me another long-term assignment (3 months), which eventually turned into a permanant position (in my field of interest). I have recommended them to everyone I know. I haven't work with the other locations, but the financial district was a great locale for me. They're very on-time with paychecks too!!! The only reason why they aren't getting the full 5 stars is because of the health insurance policy. I signed up for it (it's very cheap), but I guess you get what you pay for. read more

All of the staff that I came in contact with were professional and very interested in helping me find employment. When I became permanent at the new company, I called on them for all our needs. I had luck with John Leonard 5 years ago when I worked with Marjorie. She was excellent. After working together for a couple of months she found the perfect job for me. Unfortunately, when the economy tanked I was one of many people to lose their job. Marjorie left J.L. a while ago. Rob is very pleasant but hasn't done anything to impress me. I temped with them for a couple of months last summer and when the assignment ended they didn't seem interested in finding me another assignment. I had a fantastic experience with John Leonard. I applied for a position on their website, and heard back from them right away. I came in to meet with a few of their agents, take a few typing/computer tests, and go over my resume, and had an interview set up for the position within a few days. I was lucky enough to get the job, and have been in a great placement since February. I am now moving on to a permanent position elsewhere, but I highly recommend John Leonard. They were always prompt with their responses and helped me with everything from contract extensions to a missing check to getting health care coverage. John Leonard was a fantastic agency to work with. Not only did were they pleasant and friendly, but in a year with working with them they never had any problems paying me exactly on time. Also the quality of the jobs they gave was really good. The only thing I did not like was their holiday pay program - it seems like it's engineered not to make it really difficult for employees to attain, like you have to work obscene hours in weeks with bank holidays so you can keep up your average of hours worked. But other than that the company is great, and has really convenient locations too. read more
