Crescenta Valley water replaced the water mains a few years ago throughout my neighborhood, and they said that they had great difficulty hooking up my existing galvanized water main pipe that went up to my house back to the new water main. They said it was extremely corroded and needed to be replaced. I am doing a bunch of renovations to my house right now, and decided it was time to replace the old pipe. I called around and got a few quotes that were pretty ridiculous, and one company wanted me to pay for them to come out and give me a quote, even though they are literally 1.9 miles away from my house! I finally called my plumber who has worked with my family for decades, but doesn't do this type of work. He recommended John. I called him up, and he came right over and gave me a very reasonable quote. I booked him the following week. His crew came out at 8:30am. He had told me that the water would be off for 4 to 6 hours, and that they would be done before 5pm. They turned off the water at around 10:30, and were done with the job by 1:30. I am beyond happy with their work! I have a xeriscape front yard with lots of big, sharp cactus. His crew worked around all my plants, and didn't leave a mark on any of them. My neighbor commented to me after the install was done that he couldn't tell that any work had been done. Always a good sign. read more

I arrived home to John walking my brother through a million reasons why a new water pipeline had to be installed after discovering a leak. After quietly observing the derogatory lectures he ranted on about, I listened as he quoted some crazy price and left. He called a short while later asking what we wanted to do, and my brother said that we were leaning towards capping it, even if it was a temporary fix as we needed the water back on. John told him he'd cap it today free of charge, but he needs $2300 cash upfront tomorrow for the major fix. As it seemed a ridiculous (cash) amount, we sought a second opinion. Another plumber called after reviewing the videos of the leak and although he couldn't make it, he was happy to provide a solution so that some other plumber (I.e. John) could-- take notes John, THAT'S good service. When my brother proposed the idea to John over the phone he responded "I thoroughly explained to you why we could or couldn't do that", again in a derogatory voice. You don't want to take the time to explain it again to someone who isn't a plumber? Okay fine, I guess I get it. At this point I told my brother that my fiancé was arriving in a couple hours, and he's capped pipes before, it shouldn't be a big deal if you want to wait for the other plumber to be available. I didn't want my brother to have to keep putting up with this rude individual. Again, over the phone--my brother says, "okay, my sister's fiancé's coming home soon and--" and before he could continue, John cuts him off and says "oh what? he's a handyman? then let him take care of it" and HANGS UP. but wait, there's more... my brother had just texted John before the phone call, proposing the solution that the other plumber had suggested. John obviously reads this late because he has the audacity to call back and when my brother picks up and politely addresses him, John aggressively says "so what do you want to do? I'll put a shorter nipple (the other plumber's suggestion) for $500" Confused, my brother said "what do you mean? You just hung up on me" and John ACKNOWLEDGES the fact that he hung up on him and says "I thought we were done" I was so angry I yelled at my brother to hang up. Yes, we're done John. You don't get our business and as long as I can help it, you won't be getting the business of anyone we know. You're a money-hungry scammer and I'm sorry for anyone that feels that they have to interact with you. The way you treat people is DISGUSTING and I'm genuinely embarrassed for you. WOW, Who knew that you can get your home copper pipes replaced in just 1 day. These guys are PROS they came in early morning walked the property with me and went over the entire project. John Nelson Plumbing re-piped our entire house with copper pipes. The work crew was very organized and took great care in protecting the working area and walk ways, before they started breaking the walls. They re-piped the house in 1 day, then came out the following day after the building inspector to patch up the walls (with texture). Customer service was excellent with the office manager, who did all the work to attain the building permits, and was always available to answer any questions. We did have a leak in a connection on the pipe leading into the house, but after a call they were out in less than an hour to fix the problem. Thanks for the new pipes!!!! read more

JNPC is the best!!! On very short notice, within a one week time period, JNPC obtained a city permit, re-engineered the lines, dug up the front lawn and replaced all the grass in such a way that it could hardly be noticed that the grass had ever been dug up in the first place, copper re-piped and replaced all the drains in the rental home without any loss of use to the tenants. JNPC installed many new cut-offs for all the water lines that was part of JNPC's engineering planning. The price for all the work that John Nelson did was excellent!!! This was the second copper re-pipe and drains replacement. The first was in the house where I live, and it was on the basis of that great re-pipe experience that I insisted on John Nelson Plumbing Company for the second one. A friend had her house copper re-piped and referred me to her contractor. My 48-year-old house was due for the same. I contacted John Nelson Plumbing, which does re-piping exclusively. I would not recommend working with John Nelson Plumbing. We hired him as a subcontractor. When asking him to provide an invoice for services rendered and a w9 (which is customary for business to business transactions), he refused. An invoice is needed to submit billing to an insurance company as a general contractor. Less than 2 weeks after refusing to send over a formal invoice, my Administration Coordinator received this email from John "HAVENT BEEN PAID...FOR MYPLUMBING SERVICES...WENT THERE WHEN YOU NEEDED...PAY THE INVOICE...THANKS." To which my employee responded that she received his email and would get this invoice paid. His response email included "keep fing with me...i like it..." As the Director, I called to John for an explanation as to why he, as a professional, would send such an email. He had little to say, mostly yelling nonsense. We will not be using his services again and I would urge others to do the same. read more

I was out of town when a tenant called with no hot water. I called John Nelson plumbing to go and re-light the water heater and if necessary, replace the thermocouple assembly. The office manager called back later and let me know that parts were not available locally, and unless we wanted to wait 2 weeks for parts, that we would need a new water heater. I approved an $1100 water heater installation. They did a good job installing the water heater. When I returned to town, I found the necessary part for $35 at Home Depot which made me feel that I had not been treated fairly by John Nelson Plumbing. After over 2 years, I just got a lengthy voicemail from John this afternoon asking me to remove my prior negative Yelp review. (So be warned Yelpers... more likely than not he has convinced bad reviews to be deleted) I find it ironic that he, personally, never once attempted to address any of my concerns WHILE the work was being done. In his voicemail, he essentially questioned if I was being vindictive by writing my experiences and opinion on Yelp. He digressed into talking about sprinkles on a donut (???) - I guess acknowledging one can't make everyone happy all the time. He continued to question my motives for writing the review essentially saying that I had my laugh and to please remove it. No, my intent is never to be vindictive. I have resided in La Crescenta for 50 hears, it's a shame to deal with a local company that does not do what they say they will do. Seniors, women, new residence to the area, BE AWARE. Emil is the worst, he can't buy a clue, he is not customer service oriented, he this is the secretary that answers the phone there. They Cherry pick the jobs they want, and that's not basic plumbing its the larger jobs. They installed a $1200 clean out ran a camera through said everything is great, my water flow is running slow I called them to come back for weeks. They did not call back promptly. He told me they were too busy to go SOME WHERE ELSE. Bare in mind I have dealt with JNP for 15 years, I went further up the chain to try mediate this situation and got a lame reply. According to our experience, John Nelson's Motto "COPPER REPIPE 4 LE$$", is true. We had an estimate for $1,500 more from a well-known plumbing company that was going to repipe our house with PEX. And that did not include patching any drywall holes afterwards. They would have charged thousands more for copper. When we learned from a neighbor about the great job Nelson's Plumbing did, we made the all-important phone call and, after providing Mr. Nelson over the phone with detail of our house and its plumbing, we received his estimate by e-mail within 1/2 an hour. Around 9:00 A.M. on the agreed upon date, a team of 6 plumbers, led by their foreman Sam, showed up at our door. After showing Sam the house inside and out, the team quietly and efficiently went to work without much ado, covering our floors with tarps and our furniture with plastic sheeting. It was very reassuring to watch these young, well-trained and polite plumbers quietly go to work. Without any instruction from my wife and myself, they performed flawless teamwork and interacted quietly with Sam and one another. It became quickly obvious that each one of them had his assigned area and detail while assisting others when they needed a hand. We have had many workers in our home over the years, but we have never witnessed such teamwork. At 6:00 P.M. our house was repiped, inside and out, including a brand-new copper main, 4 outside hose bibs, new shower and bath fixtures and supply hoses in 2 bathrooms, as well as to the water heater and all sinks. The system had been checked for any leaks (there were none), and every hole had been patched professionally and even texture-sprayed (orange peel). These miracle workers cleaned all debris and vacuumed all work areas. Simply amazing! We can't say enough good things about Sam's plumbing team. - A few tips: 1) Trust that they know what they are doing and let them do their job. You will not regret it. 2) After the repiping is done, call the office, and ask for their written lifetime warranty. We received it promptly within 2 days. read more

We experienced the same scenario as David D. below. Had a lot of work done by Nelson in the early part of the 2000's with the paperwork stating Lifetime Guarantee on Labor and Materials provided by Nelson Plumbing Company. So with that we called to have them come fix a leak from our shower knob that they put in for us It took a few days for a call back but then was told that the part was lifetime guaranteed through Moen and we had to call them ourselves for the free part. Oh and my husband was told it would cost us $95.00, no wait I called and was told it would cost $125.00 to have this part replaced because they couldn't possibly send someone out for free to do a 5 min job that they on paperwork guarantee for lifetime. read more

What impressed me most was their good communication and polite workers. They welcomed questions and took the time to explain things in layman's terms. Unlike some contractors and plumbers I have had, I felt like they cared about keeping things clean and safe, too. I ended up needing to have both the fresh water and gray water pipes replaced, including traps and fixtures, though I never felt pressured into buying something I didn't want. The foreman gave me a work suit to wear when we crawled under my house, and he pointed out how the gray water pipes were already leaking, yuck! The good news is that they used quality materials and now we can take a shower and run the dishwasher and washing machine at the same time, and no more slow drains! Some advice: Get them to pull the permit and you have to call the county or city to have the inspector come out. Also, be prepared to negotiate with them about transferring the guarantee. John was on vacation when I had my work done, but his manager, Danny, was always avialable. Though they ended up needing to come back to pass inspection because of a few minor adjustments, the work was done cheerfully and quickly. I can't speak to how well they back up their warranty yet as everthing is only a few months old. More on that later, but I guess for now, no news is good news. read more

Excellent work, quickly done. We had 40-year old iron sprinkler supply pipes that burst at our Glendora home. John came out, sized up the situation, and gave us several options on how to fix it. Even though they specialize in interior repiping, they competently handled the outside job, tieing into the water supply in two different places, drilling under the driveway and through a block wall. Although our first experience with this company was good, our second experience was abysmal--the technician came to repair leaks in both of our toilets, and after he left both toilets had leaks that were worse. I should say that as he was leaving the technician said that both toilets were very old, and ultimately I did end up having to replace them, but he should have just told me that in the first place instead of charging $125 for useless effort. I'm not one to write reviews but feel it necessary to do so for John Nelson and his team; I applaud the fine work done by the company. From the moment I met John, I knew this was the guy who I wanted to repipe my old Spanish style house. I had already interviewed several. He was not the cheapest, nor the most expensive but he was clearly knowledgeable, caring, and persnickety about getting the job done quickly, cleanly, and with my 100%+ satisfaction in mind. The men did just that! From the moment the crew showed up they worked beautifully as a synchronize team; they quickly laid the drop clothes, setup to get the work done all the way through to the spackle and clean up, seamlessly covering the holes necessary to gain access under the sinks and in the bathrooms. They paid attention to every detail of the job. One of the men made point to even ask if I wanted to keep some of the old fixtures, knowing that this old house had some special historic value. Please don't use John Nelson Plumbing !!! They are a scam business ! I needed a plumber to replace a water pressure valve. I contacted John Nelson. I should of learned how the service was going to be by their lack in interest to show up when they said they would and then tried to reschedule for another time. I had taken time off work to meet with them !! I pleaded with them to show up. Giving this company the benefit of the doubt - I was quoted $400 for a water valve replacement and to snake 2 bathroom drains. He quoted me over 2 hours to get the job done. The plumber showed up the following Saturday - he replaced the valve in 20 minutes and after checking the drains in the bathroom sinks - said they didn't need snaking. He was done in under 45 minutes. I asked him for the invoice and he said he didn't have one. So , how am I suppose to pay for the service ? Now, I have to contact them the following business day and find out where the invoice is. After speaking to the office manager- Trevor- I told him that the job was done in under 45 minutes and the drains didn't need snaking- that $400 was quoted for over 2 hours work. I know new water pressure valves run about $125-$175 depending on the size. He said he would talk to John and get back to me. When he called me back he said $350 and in cash - delivered to their office by days end ! What ??? Cash?? by days end ?? I was becoming suspicious of this company. Too many inconsistencies !! I told my husband about the issue and he called them only to get the run around, also, by Trevor. We tried for several days to drop off a check at their office - which is actually the garage of a house !! They were never there during regular business hours. Finally, my husband met with Trevor and said how disappointed he was in their business ethics. Trevor could care less and just turned his back. Don't use this business ?? Super disappointed in John Nelson. I hired John to re-pipe my house a few years ago, all went well. I hired John to install a new water heater at my house about a year ago, all went well. A few weeks ago, I hired John to install 3 water heaters in another building at a significantly higher cost than other plumbers but I used John because we had a good track record. I felt like he was my plumber and I could trust him. The work was done and a couple of weeks later the gas company came out to light a tenants heater. When the gas company looked at the new water heaters they said they were improperly installed and they red tagged 2 of the 3 water heaters. When I called John's office I did not know exactly what the gas company had done, not being at the property but I told the office staff person that my tenants were saying the water heaters were shut off by the gas company and I needed them to check into the issue. John eventually called me back and immediately became angry. I was very surprised and kept saying "Wow, I can't believe you are talking to me like this" All I wanted was for John to go to the property, determine the issue cited by the gas company, and let me know what would be required to fix the problem. In the process of trying to get John to stand by his work he said to me (in a very condescending tone) and I quote "Stop pouting at me" "You cried wolf and that's not going to work" "I am not going to help you" and the like. The whole conversation was really upsetting. I had just paid him thousands and he wouldn't even go look at the problem. He said something about fearing a lawsuit. Eventually said he would go look at the property if I sent him an email saying that he was going to look at the property but only as my "friend" and that he had no liability on the work. I refused and hired someone else to go fix the mess that John made. Sad and disappointed to have had this terribly negative experience with a neighborhood plumber that I thought I could trust. read more

John Nelson Plumbing Company does Excellent work. We have lived in many different places and have worked with many plumbers. But we have never had a plumber that provides the type of quality and service that John Nelson Plumbing provided, and they were on time... right on the dot. The work that we needed to be done was pretty intense. We had them install a tankless water heater, run copper pipes for the two bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room. The amount of work was tremendous, but the end results were better than expected. They used drop clothes and cleaned up after themselves too. The best part is that they contact you after the work has been completed to make sure that everything is working properly. I would recommend these guys to anyone who is in need of a plumber. They started demanding final payment prior to obtaining permit approval. Don't believe the hype, colorful graphics and history. If you're looking for a complete re-plumb, look elsewhere. I started a complete renovation and pulled permits for all the work I was doing. This company's lead plumber had to be reminded all along the way what was agreed on in our contract. For example, insulate hot water pipes, there are supposed to be 3 hose bibs, not 2, no I didnt ask for a connection for an icemaker, on and on. The city inspector had to have him fix several items... (isn't the size of an earthquake shut-off valve something pretty basic? Hey, you need a 3/4" valve on a 3/4" line, um hello??? ) Tankless water heater was located in an incorrect location, prompting the inspector to ask him if he even read the manufacturers data. There's many more, but suffice to say, if you don't want to have to follow along every step babysitting, know absolutely nothing about plumbing, or need it done right without alot of hassle, I"d suggest you look elsewhere. Oh and, just try using the BBB to your advantage when one of their paid members doesn't live up to standards. You'll quickly find out what BBB ratings really stand for. read more

I have used Nelson plumbing several times...they did a complete copper repipe of my house and got it done as was promised...my problem is the last 2 times I have tried to keep my business local and use him again, it is over a week before he gets to the job. This last time I called on a Thursday and he did not get out there until the following Saturday...simple job on a sprinkler valve and 2 leaky sprinklers...finally called me with his quote of 700 dollars to replace the valve....when I asked why it was so much he told me he had expensive labor costs....I asked him what the hourly rate of his services were he told me 200 for a plumber for the whole day...so I guess it would take one of his plumbers 3 days to do the job, because material costs were 100 dollars at most...told him to leave and he called me back to tell me he would do it for 500...when I got there, he had another plumbing company with him to do the work....this was a big rip off...my gardener did the job the next day and felt guilty charging me 120 dollars read more
