I have sleep apnea, everyone I know with the same issue either does nothing or has the CPAP machine. I was hoping for a better solution, and I was fortunate that things lined up just right for me. Dr. John Kim fitted me for a Somnomed mouthpiece, it is comfortable, reduces snoring, and lets me get a full night's sleep. Each morning I brush my teeth, brush the mouthpiece with the same toothpaste (Arm and Hammer with Peroxide works great but any paste will do) and let it air dry. The mouthpiece requires no batteries, or electricity, and fits in a container that can fit in a shaving kit or purse. It's so simple and it has delivered great results. I no longer feel drowsy during the day, I can watch a movie without nodding off, and imy family doesn't worry about me like they used to. I do not recommend for night time teeth grinding. When I had my consultation I spoke with coordinator and everything she underlined here was what I agreed to...except the Botox I opted out of-so -$700 from the list of services. After I asked him about the trigger point injections he said I didn't need them. And I said then why am I paying for them. I only received upper and lower guards which were not any better than the one I had from another dentist (cost for both upper and lower $1,700 from previous dentist) and 2 follow up phone appts. 3rd appt I didn't even bother. I told him that the guard he had the lab make for me made my jaw hurt so bad. He did have another one made that fit better, but I still had the pop in my jaw which felt like it fractured my jaw. He showed zero interest in that. I am still having a ton of pain from that first pop of the jaw while wearing the lower guard during the day. This was a total scam. His staff just does the CT scan and he spoke with me briefly at initial appt. And has a lab make the guards just like any other dentist. I did not receive any of the last two on this list. (Regenerative TMJ therapy & Botox (I opted out on Botox so -$700). I paid for everything on the list above the Botox, but still paid $4800 for initial appt., 2 guards and 3 phone appts (on his way home from work in the car). So I ended up paying $1200 xtra for trigger point injections I never received. I feel really dumb that I did not argue this with my credit card company at least. I do not know why he has 5 stars. Please do yourself a favor and stay away. I'm pretty sure he pays to have negative reviews hidden or taken down. And the only way I would be satisfied is if he would reimburse me for the services I did not receive. I will be more than happy to discuss further with anyone who has any questions. read more

He has outstanding bedside manner and is extremely knowledgeable in this very specialized and detailed diagnosis. I did my research before going to him not only on-line but with other doctors and physical therapists for TMJ and he is considered the best in his field. He is a father of two and a good and caring person. My case was somewhat complicated as I could not pinpoint the exact initial cause of my TMJ and if I had other issues going on as well. Before Dr. Kim, I tried many treatments, and nothing worked. I had truly lost hope before meeting Dr. Kim. I thought I would just need to live in pain and adjust to it for the rest of my days. He examined me and looked at my history. I was fitted for a custom-made mouth appliance for my upper and lowers. When it came back from the lab, he patiently tweaked, adjusted and filed until it was perfect. It takes an experienced doctor to fit a complicated appliance like this one. He is also an engineer and so he thinks about creating and building a custom fit that is precise to the exact measurement. He explained everything to me clearly and made me feel very comfortable. I was referred to Dr John Kim DDS for an oral appliance by Dr Ali Mojaverian with Pacific Pulmonary Medical Group in Irvine because I have sleep Apnea and can no longer tolerate the traditional air blowing device I have used for many years. I was suffering from severe ear pain in my left ear, constantly, for over 2 years. It was an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 & never let up. I went to 2 different ear specialists, & was diagnosed with TMJ. I was in denial & extremely skeptical that the pain wasn't even in my ear but coming from my jaw! I was referred to Dr. Kim & am sooo grateful! He had a model of the jaw & showed me what was actually happening in my jaw & why I was experiencing this type of pain. Then he showed me how he could relieve the pressure from that point with a mouthguard "system." (I was surprised to learn that the mouthguard I'd had made by another dentist for grinding my teeth actually increased the pressure on that joint!) Dr. John Kim, Oral Surgeon's specialty is in the making of oral appliances to prevent clenching of the teeth and the resulting jaw pain and headaches that follow. He teaches you how to prevent clenching with the right appliances (tailor made to you) and also specific exercises. He is an expert on all the in's and out's of grinding & clinching of teeth. This is completly different than my "regular dentists," who just made me a night guard. The night guard alone only protects the teeth, but did not address the true problem of the jaw tension and soreness. I highly recommend this place. I've been working with Dr. Kim since February 2022 to treat my TMJ (basically jaw clenching and teeth grinding). I was initially looking into treating it with botox injections but tried Dr. Kim's treatment of orthodics, stretches, and exercises to retrain my bite. It's been effective in reducing the tension and pain associated with nighttime grinding, as well as teaching me what a relaxed bite should be so that I eliminate daytime clenching as well.
