John D Moving broke my 55" TV and offered to pay me .68 cents per lb of its weight to replace it. The movers asked me to turn on the TV before they moved it (to be sure it worked), and once they finished the move and left for the day - I plugged in my TV and noticed this cracked & distorted image on the screen. I was not anticipating having to buy a new TV after the move. They also lost the majority of the screws to my new bed, so the headboard is no longer attached to the bed frame, and the bed frame is also no longer intact. Lastly, I was quoted $100/hour (charged in 15 minute increments) for the two movers to pack and unpack my one bedroom apartment (which took 6 hours between the two of them) and they tried to charge me double ($200 per hour) to pack and unpack. We were able to settle with a phone call to dispatch - and they honored their original quote of $100/hour. They will not reimburse me to replace my TV. read more

Another successful move with John D Moving! We needed 2 king sized beds switched from one upstairs bedroom to another upstairs bedroom across town. We also need an existing mattress removed for disposal. Lastly, we needed them to remount a television from the other home. It was back and forth and back again. The guys showed up on time, wearing masks, and ready to work. They assembled the new bed very efficiently and quickly left to take the other bed to the other home. They removed the old, set up the newish one, & unmounted the television. I had the time for a quick shower and they were back again with the mount and television. Everything was done professionally and the way I'd do it (I'm picky). We moved last Tuesday and this was by far the worst moving experience. We had to wait for more than 6 hours for the movers to show up. None of the three was wearing any gloves or masks. They dropped one of the boxes and damaged my computer equipment in the process. Though they gave a discount, the job was really subpar. I waited to review as it was our first time using movers and I wanted to make sure my experience was out of the norm and that my expectations weren't too high. Turns out they weren't and our movers just didn't do a great job. Nothing was broken so I'll give them that. We went with John D under the recommendation of our realtor. When I called to get an estimate the person I spoke to gave me an approximate amount of time it would take and a window of the movers arrival. I was told to have everything packed and labeled and to leave the furniture assembled because one of the movers would disassemble and assemble at the new place while the other two moved. First, the movers arrived early which was annoying because we weren't 100 percent done with everything, but still had mostly everything boxed and labeled. The movers helped disassemble but did not assemble anything at the new place. They didn't put any of the boxes in the clearly labeled rooms so after they left we had to move everything to their proper place. It was a sloppy and expensive job and I am never getting movers again. I thought the point of getting movers was to make things less stressful but it was infinitely more stressful and less organized than moving on our own. I think the movers were more worried about getting everything done quickly than getting everything done correctly even though I indicated in the quote that we were in no rush. I used this moving company over the weekend through umovefree.com. I received 2.5 hours free then I had to pay for 2 more hours. I was fine with that. We had some more things to move and I was willing to pay more. They only sent two movers and the truck wasn't big enough to hold all my furniture. I told them that we were moving from a 2 bedroom apartment and we had a garage full of furniture. The workers got tired and didn't go back to get the remaining items. One of the guys didn't even try not to hit the walls or scratch things. Her just wanted to get things done. I've used a couple other movers in the past who were great and took great care of my furniture. I will definitely think twice about this for the next move. read more

I am generally a very patient person and I really hate to do this, but this moving experience has been the worst and most stressful I have ever had. The crew arrived an hour late to kick things off. I was told they would call 15 minutes prior to arrival. They did not do that and caught me while I was across the street just starting lunch with my parents, which we promptly had to pick up and take with us - not a huge deal. I requested a two man crew for two hours because i was only moving out of a 582 sq ft studio apartment and didn't have much. I was quoted $225-270 at the most. They came in with four men, which is not what I requested, and attempted to charge me $350 instead of the quoted amount. They began the work and then I realized two of the men were not even with the company and asked to continue with only the two men crew I had requested. It became clear that they were trying to take advantage of a young, kind, and seemingly naive girl. Unfortunately, they were the least helpful movers I have ever had. Because of covid, I was not given a proper tour of the new building and was trying to navigate the area just like the movers. Being a professional moving company, I hoped they would speak to the office manager and find the freight elevator while I took care of some other obstacles. I called the office and got the directions for them (very specific directions). They arrived at my new building at 2:21. I called them at 2:30 with these instructions. They continued to call and text me and sit out front for 40 minutes. I was also running around trying to find a certain elevator for them because they didn't seem to want to look themselves. They did not begin moving my things into my new apartment until after 3:00 (with the time i requested, they should have been done around this time). Eventually my dad, who is in his 60s with two knee replacements, took the lead and practically stayed with them to help them move my things. This is completely unacceptable for the amount I paid. There were also certain items that they refused to move, like clothes that were hanging, for example. I was told wardrobe boxes were available for rent or purchase (for even more money of course), but I was not told they were required. I spent lots of time laying the clothes out and making it organized and easy for them to move. They then refused and I was forced to take every item and hang it back up. I spent almost $400 to move a huge amount of my own things. On top of their unprofessional behavior, they did not follow any CDC guidelines for covid. There were no gloves or masks being worn. My parents were with me, and in their mid-60s, and their lack of protective gear really put my parents at risk. I called the office when the crew was approaching three hours (remember I had asked for two...), as they were clearly being petty and only moving one item or one box at a time - and parked on the complete opposite side of the building so the walk was taking plenty of time. I left a voicemail and also sent a message through Yelp, which had been our primary communication prior to this day. I did not hear back from any supervisors and was still charged $360 for this ridiculous job. On top of all this, the man was upset I had a debit card. He asked for cash... even though I called that morning to verify debit cards were fine. He acted like he was doing me a favor by not charging me the 4% debit card fee. To say I am disappointed in this company is a huge understatement. I will continue to contact a supervisor because I have never experienced anything like this. Movers are supposed to ease your worries and make your moving day less stressful. This company/crew caused so much stress, anxiety, and negative feelings and I will certainly not use them nor recommend them ever again. read more
