I just had a very bad experience here. I called to get a quote on special order tires, and we agreed on a price. After I dropped the car off, I got a call back, saying the new tires are not run flats, which is what is recommended for my car. We agreed they would sub run flats. Price turned out to be 2x what we agreed to originally. My mistake not to explicitly check price of the subs. Still, run flats for my car were available from many other vendors for about the price we agreed to originally, and Joshua at Joes who I spoke to about this, knew that I was price conscious. He should have warned me about the major proce increase. I feel ripped off. I won't go back here. read more

I have very unhappy with the work and service I received here. I had purchased tires for all three of our cars and am sorry I gave them my business. I took my car to fix the alignment they had worked on, my car pulls to the left far worse than when I first arrived. These guys tried to rob me. At check-in I was happy to hear my (Berkeley Toyota) dealership owns Joe's Tires. I mentioned I was busy and hoped it wouldn't take too long before Jose said it would take 45 minutes. (I had a slow leak and couldn't find the cause.) After about 30 minutes a wet tire was set against the wall then Jose was busy on the phone for 15 minutes. Then I walked forward and Jose said it was unrepairable and asked if I wanted a new one; I pointed to the wet tire and cocked my head, to ask if it was mine; Jose said it was mine. I said I needed to leave now. He showed me a white circle marked over where they had found the leak on the sidewall. (Sidewalls leaks are unrepairable. I believed Jose even though inside the circle looked perfect.) I took the tire to Costco the next day (4/6/16) since it was under tread wear and road hazard warranties, and the tire there cost 2/3 of Joe's $188 cost. Costco told me there was NO LEAK where Joe's circled (sidewall); the leak was from a nail they found hidden pointing sideways down in the tread, and Costco's fixed it for free. Costco said when they put the tire in water they looked first inside the circle but it was perfect; they said the bubbles from the nail in the thread were obvious. I believe Joe's tires was trying to cheat me. (That I couldn't find the leak gave them an opportunity to lie that the leak was in an un-repairable location.) These guys should be behind bars. Went in to replace a blown tire. I was sent there by folks in Berkeley's Toyota service dept, who I previously trusted. The staff there was friendly, and though the tire price seemed a bit steep to me, I was in a rush to get it done and so didn't worry about it. Perhaps I should've been tipped off when the employee helping me refused to give me my own copy of the estimate until *after* my car was done. Turns out that they charged me $177 for the tire, a ContiProContact P205/55R16, for which standard prices turn out to be between $101 and $125. Never going there again, and my trust in the folks at Toyota of Berkeley will drop substantially if they don't give me at least $50 back for their horrible recommendation. read more

I was a walk-in customer on a Monday afternoon, and I needed to get a nail removed that was embedded in my front right tire & causing my tire pressure light to turn on. Josh at the front desk welcomed me warmly and explained everything to me very clearly. I went here to have my rear brake pads replaced, not a big deal. The price was just over $190 for the parts & labor, including taxes. They did a fine job and got it done relatively quickly, though 45 minutes later than they had promised. Jose and Stephen are pleasant and seem to be relatively straight as far as mechanics go. Because this was a very easy job, I don't really feel qualified to judge their general know-how. As far as prices go, they seem to be average or just a bit higher than average for Berkeley. An oil change here will cost you $42 including tax. Check engine diagnostic is somewhat pricey - $135. If you want to replace your tires here, my impression from comparing with other places in Berkeley and Albany, is that their prices are on the more expensive part of the spectrum. read more

I just got new tires from Costco over the weekend and was in need of an wheel alignment. Because of the sports suspension on BMW's, not all shops can do the alignment correctly. Having called several places, I was directed to Joes Tires. Spoke to Jose and he assured me they specialized in BMW's. He then told me to drive down and it would be done in an hour. Drove to the shop and he remembered me over the phone. I was literally in and out in a 1/2 hr and paid WHOPPING $99.95 for the service (which is a bargain). Point is, it would've cost a lot more at the dealership. People who drive BMW's know what I am talking about.... In talking with Jose, they used have a contract with Weatherford BMW to do all wheel alignments. Props to Joes Tires. read more

The beloved 2008 Prius that I gave my daughter was riding on pretty much bald tires, after our 6,000 mile cross-country trip some months ago. I actually popped into Joe's looking for some quality windshield wipers, which the pleasant and helpful Jose Burgos selected for me. After checking my tires for the next upcoming cross-country trip that my grad student daughter will be making, we decided on some top-notch Michelins that will get her home safely to me. Her chariot got a full alignment, oil change, spare tire check, and multi-point check, along with an offer of a free last minute inspection the day before she leaves. Joe's is really conveniently located, being on University Avenue and close to my house, which is why they were the first shop I thought of to take care of my flat tire. I called to inquire about the service I needed and the customer service was great over the phone, and once at the shop. However, I am disappointed that their conclusion was that my tire was irreparable, when it actually was reparable. After turning down an $150 new tire, I took my car to the shop where I bought the tires (a little of a year old) and they were able to repair the tire with no problems. Unfortunately, I ended up with a flat tire about two weekends ago (definitely saw this coming, considering the tread on all four of my tires were worn down). I called Joe's Tires and was quoted $532.99 for "out the door pricing, with EVERYTHING included" for four Falken tires. I was happy with the price, so I scheduled a next-day appointment. The morning of my appointment, I called to inquire about pricing for a different set of tires. Come to find that, while I was told the $532.99 quote was for a comprehensive service, she noted on her end that it was without alignment, which would cost an additional $120. Had this information been disclosed to me during my initial inquiry, I would have continued to shop around and consider other local shops. Being that street cleaning was scheduled for the upcoming Monday, it was important that I towed my car and resolved this before the weekend ended. I spoke to Carlos and expressed my dissatisfaction with the service I received over the phone - I felt as though the person I originally spoke to knew I was working on a tight timeline and took advantage of that fact by being dishonest about pricing. He was willing to remedy the situation by providing excellent customer service. Carlos offered me the alignment for $89 and gave me a $10 discount on each tire to match the pricing of the tire I was calling to inquire about. The total for this service was approximately $570 (including all four tires, a tire disposal fee, alignment, balancing, wheel weights, and a warranty) and it was quick and easy. All tires purchased from Joe's come with a warranty, which is a huge plus! I plan to return as a customer in the future and to recommend this business to my friends and family. Brought in a rental car with a flat and the man working at the front desk helped us immediately and even spoke with the rental car company's insurance as a courtesy so that we paid nothing out of pocket. WOW - Joe's is the BEST!!! Here's why: Took my flat in to be repaired but it couldn't be [side wall puncture] . . . and THEY DIDN'T CHARGED FOR THAT!!! But, that left me with only 3 tires plus the spare, so the next day, I went back to buy 4 news ones . . . . . but I was late for work so I called them to let them know I was on my way. When I arrived, not only did the sales rep meet me at the front door with the paperwork ready to go but the technician was there waiting too! I mean, GEEZ!!! I brought my Prius to Joe's, and the staff were both professional and pleasant to work with. The technicians took the time to help me decide whether to replace the two oldest tires or all four (I went for the set), and when they were done, took the time to explain details about what PSI to keep my tires at (40) and how often to bring them in for a complimentary rotation (every 6 months). Went in yesterday because my back right tire kept deflating very quickly. They called me back within an hour saying they found nothing wrong with the tire but they found a dent on the rim which they fixed. I went to pick up the car and they didn't charge anything for looking at the car or fixing the rim. They were friendly, professional and quick. Third experience- they gave me an oil change, topped off my tires, and gave me a fully instructive thirty minute lesson on how to install the tire snow chains I bought from them. My experiences with Joe's Tires have always been great. A few years ago I hit a bad pothole, resulting in damaged tires and two cracked shock absorbers. The repair quote from my dealer made me cry. I'd gotten new tires from Joe's not that long before, and decided to call them for a second opinion. They fixed my car for significantly less and did great work. That made me a loyal customer. Recently hit another pot hole on a dark rural road, which put the car so badly out of alignment I had to pull the steering wheel to the left to keep the car straight. I was really lucky that nothing was truly broken, and the good folks at Joe's were able to correct the severe misalignment and get me up and running smoothly again. I went into Joe's Tires without an appointment on a Sunday morning with a flat tire and a tiny spare on. The courteous man at the front desk helped me right away and my car was done within an hour. I also asked them to check the health of the remaining tires, and after taking a look they confirmed that the remaining tires were only 50% used and I did not need to replace them. They did not take the opportunity to try to upsell me. Added bonus, there are a number of restaurants and shops in walking distance to pass the time. read more
