The Trees By Tomales Bay - The sun setting on the trees!

The "Hi House" is absolutely gorgeous, starting with the panoramic view of the sky and trees all around you when you wake up in the morning. You can't get much closer to being in the elements, except you have central heating and a comfy bed. There are decks all around the place for just sitting and taking in the scenery, and I bet if you brought that certain someone, you might not leave the place for days. This little house is made for two, with one central room made entirely of glass, a tiny kitchen and even tinier bathroom. There is a Jetson-esque tram that actually takes you from your car up the hill to the house, so you really do feel like you're in a tree house, far up from the world down below. Antlers and succulents and 1960s furniture are the backdrop. Between the hiking trails and the oysters, the ocean and the Scotland highland-ish surroundings, there's tons to do and explore. Just one rule... no rocks! You are in a glass house after all.

You dreamed of this when you were six, but who knew it existed? The Trees by Tomales Bay is composed of just two properties on 5 acres. On your first night, there is continental breakfast left in the fridge. It's "adults only" and you couldn't comfortably fit more than two, anyway. There are three separate decks for reading, and you'll see little more than trees and the water in the distance (oh, and some birds who missed the glass and fly into it-it's okay-they all kept flying. I checked) It's even decked out in 70's decor to complete your childhood fantasy. The bed is super high, very soft, and I was pleased with the linens. The owners have also outfitted the house with every book on Point Reyes ever published. Quiet, peaceful-an absolute favorite.

The family history here is compelling and part of why we chose to stay here- it is a privilege to be part of the Straus family's world, and to see the land that Mrs. Straus fought to preserve. The home is comfortable and lends itself to so many great memories- we enjoy conversations in every nook and love retreating to our rooms for much needed rest. The views around the property are stunning. One of my stays was rainy and that was equally delicious - this natural invitation to hunker down and read and be present. Michael is a wonderful person and host and has always shown us such kindness and openness. It is great working with him to set up the place prior to our arrival, from extra requests to making a fire pit for s'mores. This place holds a special place in my heart and I would come back more often if I could afford to - it's a great treat. You will love it.

Have you ever worked with a vendor who was so wonderful you instantly wanted to be friends with…read morethem? That's Michael and Vivien Straus. They had our hearts within minutes of meeting them, and we quickly learned that their warmth was matched with deep event planning expertise, lightning fast responses to all manner of inquiries, and a general willingness to do absolutely everything within their power to make our wedding seamless. We can't say enough positive things about Vivien and Michael. We had heard planning a wedding would be stressful, but largely thanks to Vivien and Michael, we honestly never felt stressed. They regularly welcomed us to the ranch ahead of our wedding, helping us build a special bond to the land and to their family. They worked so effectively as a team, helping us find lodging, answering questions on behalf of our other vendors, thoughtfully navigating asks related to honoring recently passed family members, and so much more. During the wedding weekend, Michael bent over backwards to make sure everything ran smoothly, always beaming with a huge smile. His soft serve ice cream was such a big hit! It was always such a relief to see Michael, because we knew he was fixing something we didn't have to worry about, or making something work better, or just thinking 10 steps ahead to make a future moment run smoothly. He is exactly who you want at your wedding!! We had the wedding of our dreams and we can't imagine a better place or better hosts for this special moment in our lives. We plan to visit Straus Home Ranch regularly and will loudly sing the praises of Michael and Vivien everywhere we go, because we're convinced there is no better place on the planet to host a wedding.

The very act of writing this review, and adding my beloved Anns View to Yelp's database, is an act…read moreof tremendous selflessness. Because if I had my way, none of you would know about this gem so I could go there whenever I wanted. But I love Ann, and I love Yelpers, so I'll make this personal sacrifice. Anns View is beyond special. It's a teeny tiny little spot, with only two suites, situated atop a hill on Hwy One right next to Tamales Bay. The views from the North and South Suite are breathtaking. When you are looking for a weekend away and some quality time with someone you adore, this is your spot. It's not cheap, but for what you get, it's a steal. For $275 a night the North suite is a bedroom plus huge living room with a fireplace, huge kitchen, and most spectacularly, literally 270 degrees of views of the bay. Floor to ceiling windows facing South and West. Everything is incredibly modern and tastefully done (no awful floral patterns here, just sleek hardwood and stark white everywhere). Ann will stock your fridge with local Pt Reyes cheese, fresh squeezed orange juice, scones, and cream for your morning coffee. The South suite is just one bedroom with the view only looking South, for $225 a night if you are looking to spend a little less, but honestly the North suite is more than worth the extra $50 a night. Two nights reservations are required for weekends and holidays. Once you're there you can visit Hog Island Oyster Company, Pt Reyes, go hiking, kayaking, fishing, windsurfing, wine tasting, or honestly, just chill out in your gorgeous suite with you honey, read, pay games, be lazy, and whatever else it is you might want to do on such an occasion ;).

The views from the property are stunning, and there is a great outdoor space for eating, reading, drinking, staring at the water and birds. Why the 3 starts, you ask? When charging high-end prices, one should expect some high-end comfort and amenities. Properties like this on the coast are going to be rustic. But that doesn't mean they should have hard beds, unreliable heat, and no water pressure in the shower (came out in a trickle). Also, it is very hard to discern from the website the exactly sleeping layout. One king bed is in an overall open area with the kitchen, dining, living spaces upstairs. The heating in this area failed during our stay. A second king is in an unheated outbuilding on the deck/pier off of the downstairs area (this area is not in the photos), which means going outside to get to the main building if you need a quick trip to the loo in during the night. There is also a private room with a full sized bed, and ladder to get to a loft above it with a futon type bed. (Don't try exiting that space in the middle of the night!) If you rent this place, just know what you are getting into.
