Nice little outpost of this NYC coffee shop. I stopped by here for a quick virtual meeting for work prior to a tennis match. It's a bit hard to find as there's no sign on the outside, but it's on the second floor of the Northwest Corner Building at Columbia. There are many tables, tall ceilings, with large windows which allows lots of natural light during the day. When I was there it seemed pretty busy, with students studying or having meetings. I had a cold brew and a croissant, and can't complain about either. If you're a fan of Joe's, nice to have this spot in the neighborhood as a convenient place to stop by for your caffeine pick-me-up. read more

It's a Joe Coffee, love the tiny ice when they put enough, but I recently got an iced tea that only had a thin layer of ice and thus became an un-iced medium temperature tea very quickly. The seating area is theoretically a nice place to work, with high ceilings, lots of light, and plenty of seats and tables, but it can get extremely loud between other people chatting and the music. Sometimes, there's also an annoying high-pitched buzzing noise that no one else seems to notice? Don't get the seasonal chocolate orange latte. I was excited to try this, but the orange flavor is very sour/tart, unlike the sweet creaminess and citrus aromatics of an actual chocolate orange. Also, why are their prices so high for small coffee drinks? I get this is New York, but an extra dollar for milk substitute seems a bit steep. Additionally, why is their iPad set to tip $2 at baseline, regardless of the price of your drink? Once I bought a $2 canned beverage and the preset tip was literally the price of the drink lol. read more

My favorite place to study on the UWS! The location is a bit obscure and hard to find, but once you do... It's a great work and study space! It's on the 2nd floor of Columbia's Northwest Corner Science building. When you walk in the entrance, you'll see marble walls and an empty lobby- no resemblance of a cafe, but follow the aroma of coffee, up the stairwell and you'll be at Joe's! You'll first see a grab-and-go kiosk, if you're on a time crunch to work or class, it serves quick orders, like small pastries, cold brew, and drip coffee. If you turn your head to the left, you'll see a sun-lit expanse of seats and tables. The main ordering station is here as well. If you have been to other Joe's locations, you'll know that, unlike many other cafes, a pitcher of Oatmilk is actually freely situated alongside the usual whole, skim, soy, almond milks! (Unfortunately, you still have to pay extra for oat milk if you order it in a latte) Although not a lot of outlets available, the WiFi is fast and the space is so big and open that noise is not an issue. The coffee is good, but there's plenty of good coffee in the area, all more reasonably priced - Oren's is nearby and there's also Kuro Kuma if you're willing to walk a bit. Prices here have been steadily climbing - two years ago a small coffee was $2.50 and now it's $3. (One advantage of Joe's however is that they have self-serve soy milk along with the regular milk that you can add without having to specifically request it - Oren's, Kuro Kuma, Brownie's, and Blue Java don't. You need to ask the barista for almond milk though) The seating area is crowded and not clean. I'm not sure why they chose to have white tables and chairs as this makes it even easier to see how dirty they are, and the trash cans are usually overflowing and gross. It's very hard to find a seat as it's always full of grad students, and it's a little difficult to maneuver around the tables when you're trying to leave. The baked goods come from different bakeries around the city and the selection changes periodically - last time I was there it was Union Square, Ovenly (love), and Underwest. Previously they've carried items from Ceci-Cela (!), Doughnut Plant, Robicelli's, and some others I can't remember at the moment. This is a nice spot to visit if you're in need a respite from your library study group, but avoid the sandwiches at all costs. We came here for a quick break before our classwork and against my better judgement, I tried a korean-based chicken sandwich and my gosh, the dry texture of the bread, combined with the slimy mayo-y yet chalky chicken protein and the measly piece of garnish made this sandwich go straight to the receptacle. Plenty of tables and seats to choose from. All beverages come in two sizes - small and large. Drinks are anywhere from $3 to $5 after tax.They also have lunch items that cost you around $7-$9. They also have bakery items, which I didn't try. The line can get long but it also goes by fairly quickly. Cashiers and baristas are well trained and know how to move the lines along quickly. They work hard too! Even though the common/seating area is spacious, it is still hard to find a seat just because there are always students around. This might be a good grab-n-go place unless you are lucky to find a table here! read more

Solid coffee shop. Yes, it is a chain, however it is convenient for me because it is on Columbia's campus and a block away from residential halls. The coffee is just fine, nothing spectacular and nothing terrible. I love that they have oat milk and I always get an oat milk mocha. Seating can be tricky, especially on a rainy day. Don't be shy to ask someone sitting alone if you can sit at the table, that is how most of the tables fill up. You have to be proactive about getting a spot. The staff members are friendly, fast paced, and proficient at their job. The cleanliness can be a little better, tables often have coffee marks and spills on them that have dried and not been wiped away. Another plus is the coffee cart that is on site at the top of the staircase on school days--you can get a brewed coffee (iced or hot) quickly, as well as a small pastry selection. As a new grad student at Columbia, I was overjoyed to discover Joe's! It's certainly a busy spot, but I'm so happy to know there's a place with good coffee and an amazing view practically on campus. It isn't really marked on the outside, but look for a building with big glass walls on the corner of Broadway and 120th. Walk upstairs to find Joe's and a ton of students working and talking. It's pretty hard to find a seat, but you can usually ask to sit with someone if all the tables are full. Because of the high volume of traffic, it can be a little hard to get work done if you need more of a cozy, quiet atmosphere. I sat there for 3 hours and not once was the line or seating area empty. However, if you're ok with doing some light work, meeting people, or reading with chatter in the background, this is the place. There's free wifi from Columbia, so that's a plus. Let's talk about that view. I'm in love with the amount of open space and light in Joe's, all thanks to the giant, floor-to-ceiling glass walls that take up two walls. It transforms what could feel like a very cramped environment into a collaborative and inviting open space. The drinks are a little on the pricier side, but still pretty decent for the city. My iced coffee was smooth and not at all sour. Most drinks are about $3-5, while they also have an assortment of baked goods and small bites like grain bowls. I picked up a little chocolate-covered macaroon (not macaron! think coconut-y, ball shaped, and dense) for $1.75 and it was so tasty! Another plus is that they sometimes have doughnuts from Doughnut Plant (!!) as well as a stamp card for free drinks. On top of all this, the baristas are always friendly despite the crazy number of people they have to deal with. That smile goes a long way! I didn't think it would be so difficult to get an iced double espresso. I had my own travelers mug (because I want to avoid wasting cups) in which I wanted to get an iced double espresso. Yes, I understand that some cheapskates would ask for an iced double espresso in a large cup and fill it up with cold milk from the condiment bar to make a "ghetto latte". Which is why I specifically asked for my mug to be completely filled with ice so that there wouldn't be room for a lot of milk (or soy milk in my case). I only wanted a tiny bit of soy milk anyway. And still, I was given a hard time about it and told that I would have to be charged extra for a latte. They handed me the double espresso in a paper cup (which was then wasted) with a tiny bit of ice (which was pretty much melted) and gave me back my travelers mug empty. (At which point, what would have stopped me from pouring the cold espresso into my mug and filling it up with milk anyway?) Fine. If you don't trust me to not fill my cup up with milk/soy milk, you can offer to put a little bit of soy milk into my cup for me ... or something. I have never had problems getting iced double espressos anywhere else. I won't be coming back here, which won't be a terrible loss since a) the coffee and food is a little overpriced, and b) the line is SO UNNECESSARILY SLOW that even though I arrived 20 minutes before class, I was still late for class just across the street at TC. read more

Have been coming here for years Lately though the espresso is either not being dialed in properly or they've roasted the beans differently because it's so burnt tasting it's nearly undrinkable. Starbucks is actually smoother which is saying a lot especially when you're paying for an artisan coffee. Also, what happened to the old pastries? Located directly across the street from Teachers College, Joe Coffee is a great alternative if you need a change in scenery from the college. There are two options - stand on the really long line to get a fancy espresso drink or go to the express cart with no line and get a drip coffee (obviously the way to go). The sizes of coffee they offer and comparable to Starbucks however half the price. The coffee is strong and flavorful, and they allow you to fill up your own cups from the vats which I prefer so you can get the perfect amount of coffee. Seating is variable, the tables are usually full especially if you go at a prime time. I wouldn't suggest going here if you need to cram for an exam or a paper, but if you're discussing a group project or meeting a colleague it's a good spot. The lines can get long and seating can be sparse, but the coffee is delicious and an easy pick up on my way to class! read more

Your classic Joe Coffee, but located on Columbia's campus. Rarely is the line short, but the coffee is worth the expensive price (New York right?). I really enjoy the way Joe Coffee roasts their beans, and even though I prefer cappuccino, I find myself grabbing a regular cup every now and then if I'm looking to get in and out of there quick. The food is ok, and depending on what sandwiches they are serving, can make for a nice lunch. I rarely get any pastries other than a salted chocolate chip cookie. It can be near impossible to find a table since it is a favorite place for people to hangout, work or hold a meeting, and is in one of the most trafficked buildings on campus. Its kept very clean and the staff are always a delight to talk with! read more

I am so excited for this to be here! It is situated in a lovely spot of Columbia's new science building with a nice view of the corner (kitty corner-ish to the Union Theological Seminary). The people working here are really friendly too! I got a shot of espresso and had some of my friends' mocha and hot chocolate. All of them were fantastic. I especially liked the mocha - strong flavors, but well balanced. We also tried some of the pastries (jam dot cookie, choco chip, croissant), which were quite delicious. The croissant wasn't particularly exciting, but I loved the cookies. The dot cookie was thick and jammy with nut chunks throughout and the chocolate chip chips were surprisingly fruity (in a good way). I'll definitely be back. Bummer that they close at 8 pm though. read more

This location is the nicest Joe's location in New York. With the floor length windows, you get to see all the buildings around the cafe including Barnard right across the street. To enter the cafe, you go down a set of escalators and slowly ascending into the cafe is one of the most magical experiences. The staff is also the friendliest. I was at Columbia for a summer program and I came almost two times everyday quickly becoming friends with the staff. The chai latte is genuinely the best chai latte I've ever had in my life and everyone definitely needs to try it. Their pastries are also really good especially the chocolate chip cookies. I absolutely love Joe, especially this location within Columbia. Would strongly recommend everyone to go and try the chai latte! read more

Excellent espresso in a great location. The almond milk is good, and they have oat also, but I wish they had soy! Prices are consistent with other places in the area, but the cups run smaller here (ie small is 8oz I think? Definitely not 12oz!). It gets super busy during semester but they keep the lines moving quickly. The pastries are not too exciting looking, but maybe that's just because they're $3-4 and also kinda small. So why the 4 stars? Well it's a hell of a lot better than Starbucks, and the only decent espresso place open to the public on Broadway between 112th St and La Salle! read more

Joe the Art of Coffee is my absolute favorite cafe near/on campus. The coffee is pretty good, but it's everything else that makes the place AMAZING. I usually get the latte, which is absolutely perfect. The milk is steamed to just the right temperature, the froth just the right consistency/thickness, and the latte art beautiful. Just watching the baristas pull the shots of espresso makes my mouth water since the shots are this beautiful, rich, brown colour. And seriously, the prices aren't that bad. It's like $4 for a latte, which is on par with Starbucks. If you want cheap coffee, go to a street cart since anywhere that's decent around Columbia is moderately expensive. They also have baked goods from the best bakeries in the city. I've see croissants from Ceci-Cela (rated best crossaint by Serious Eats), cupcakes from Robicellis, and doughnuts from Doughnut Plant (don't know if they still have all this). The place itself is sunny, with huge windows that run from ceiling to floor. There's wifi and if you come early enough in the morning, it's pretty quiet and peaceful, and a great place to get work done (I've written many a papers here). I took off one star since the wait is so long and the baristas aren't exactly the most efficient. They added a express "cart" on the other side of the room to make things go faster, but it still takes way too long. Also, the setup of the room isn't great and they could honestly fit many more tables and chairs into the room without it being too crowded. Joe's Coffee is a great alternative to both studying in the library and chatting at Starbucks! I came here for the first time today at around 1PM on a Saturday to study - the place was, surprise surprise, packed. The natural lighting was absolutely marvelous though, as were the non-burnt coffees, rather diverse selection of food and pastries, and friendly service. Also, the music isn't overwhelmingly loud or obnoxious so you can definitely still focus. I had a small decaf latte with almond milk ($4.75) and it was smooth and delicious! But the gluten free salted peanut butter cookie was a bit too dry, salty and sweet for my taste (especially given it was $2.50 each!!). The bathroom (clean) is located on the same level behind the escalators - plus one for convenience! I wish this place had high tables and stools, in addition to the tables, so more people can sit and study. Will be frequenting here:) read more

A coffee shop that caters to studying students at Columbia wouldn't normally be the first place I stop for a caffeine fix, but my friend said that it was good. We hung out for a hour to use the wifi and have some iced teas. Two large iced teas (that we both agreed were the size of most mediums) were over $8. The amount of ice was pretty standard, and my black iced tea was what I would expect. I was surprised that there were multiple options for herbal iced tea, one being cherry hibiscus and another being something with an emerald name. Because of the design, the space is loud and echo-y, and there is a clear shortage of staff and space for the crowds here. Not my ideal place to work but an overall OK experience. read more
