Bought menudo from this bakery and found a hair in the menudo. I wonder what else could be in it. Wont be eating here again.

You might not stop here unless you know what awaits inside. Probably the best New Mexican food we had on a recent visit to Las Cruces was served up in a friendly atmosphere. We had the smothered Chile rellenos and ground beef tacos each with beans and rice. Total Cost for the two meals was about $15. AND there's a bakery with a huge number of Mexican baked goods and pastries. We made an out of the way stop at Jiruh on our way make to the El Paso airport just to pick up a couple of bakery items. Ok, the place is not fancy, no linen table cloths, but the food, baked goods, and friendly staff make this a great stop in the Las Cruces area.

I knew familiar dishes would be a little different,.. and they were tasty and hit the spot. First, it was the salsa. It was good, had a little bite to it - not too much, and a very good, different flavor than anything I'd ever had before. The chips were "fresh", like homemade, probably from a local tortilleria, if not homemade. Exactly what I was looking for. I had the chimichanga, and it came with a choice of sauce. I chose the green. It wasn't green chile green (I DO love green chile!), it was more of a tomatillo, chile, and more mix. And it was quite good! The chimi didn't have much to it, but was very tasty as well. The meat, though shredded, was fine shredded, and therefore not stringy. It was very busy and noisy on a Sunday afternoon, mainly due to the Mariachi band. The band was very good, but also very LOUD. A few things in our meal were messed up, as well as the bill. So only 4 stars for me. Hopefully a better experience next time. Also, next time, Chile Rellenos... since a few people have raved about them here. My favorite... so we'll see... ;) Oh, and btw, this is almost right across the street from Chope's. If you've never been, but are thinking of trying Chope's, don't bother. This place is 100 x better!! Chope's is awful!

The complimentary (first round) of chips and salsa was above par. The menu was descriptive and the service was friendly. We ordered the fajita tacos and the combination lunch plate (chicken hard taco, green chile con carne, green enchilada, and a chile relleno) with borracho beans and rice. The fajita tacos and chile con carne were okay, but the enchilada was weak and the relleno was filled with some sort of liquid cheese that poured out in the first lukewarm bite. Rice was okay. Beans were overwhelmingly over-seasoned with oregano. The combo plate was drowning in broth from the chile con carne. We were disappointed hearing that this place had such great green chiles, but it was all so watered-down that we didn't taste much of the chile flavor. :(

I now understand the "greasy" comment regarding the tacos. Yes, they were a little bit but it wasn't horribly offensive. Also, tacos can simply be a little greasy. It's fine, not a deal breaker. The tacos were very small portions, a bit smaller than the street tacos I'm used to. The carne asada was OK. It had a decent flavor but was like "pow" flavorful or OMGosh I have to have more. It satisfied my craving. The carnitas were also OK. Nothing super exciting. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here for food but wouldn't be offended to have it again. I appreciated that it's also a small store which sells a variety of meats with some decent sales. Spices and a small amount of fresh produce. Customer service was pleasant and efficient.

As an observation, Chavira is a Spanish family name.
