i was more than happy with my experience at Jinsei. i consider myself a sushi snob & my roll from here was extremely good considering being in the south where there is not a lot of fresh water around north mississippi. i came here on a friday night with two friends and i will start by saying the fried green beans are a MUST to order. fried, fresh, perfectly battered & paired wonderfully with a nice sauce. next, we ordered the kobe beef that was amazing, it comes with a scorching hot rock that you cook it on (best appetizer here) for my entree i ordered a roll (i forget the name) but it was a yellowtail roll and it was delicious. overall, my experience here was perfect. the ambiance, service and food all met my standards and i was happy to eat all of the dishes i ate. When my colleague told me we were going to have sushi, I almost freaked out. After all we were in Oxford, Mississippi, not exactly known as a hotbed of Japanese cuisine. I was expecting the place to be a hole in the wall; the reality stunned me. I couldn't stop my head from swiveling around...it was almost embarrassing. The interior was modern in a minimalist sort of way; not at all the hole in the wall I expected. If i was "beemed" to this location I'd expect I was in New York or Los Angeles when I finally walked out of the doors. We had a nice sampling of their menu and it was all delicious. Everything tasted and smelled fresh. I wish I could speak in specifics, but I was too busy eating and being memorized by the food. The flavor profiles and combinations were decidedly modern; meaning in some cases I've never had those flavor combinations in sushi or traditional Japanese cuisine; every bite was an experience! AMAZING! Their rolls are all gas. The bangkok is probably my favorite. Their drinks are also amazing. The Hound of Hades is my go-to cocktail. So spicy and sweet and I ask for extra extra spice! The bartender always hooks me up with that one. Our waiters and waitresses are always so sweet and knowledgeable. We tried the Kobe beef buns last time and they were tasty! I just wish they came with more food lol. I found myself satisfied, but not stuffed. But we all know that's how it is when you eat sushi! You feel great and satisfied afterwards. The hostess was EXTREMELY RUDE. Girl forgot to hang up the phone before she told her coworker how stupid we were for asking about wait time when the restaurant doesn't even take reservations. This was the one year anniversary dinner of my cousins death, who's favorite restaurant was Jinsei. I am extremely disappointed in the restaurant and will be taking my business elsewhere. My son just started school at Ole Miss. It was my first time to Oxford in 20 years. We were tired and looking for a good meal and sushi sounded excellent. Found a review online and picked this gem. We had an amazing dinner! I was honestly surprised to find an unexpected modern Japanese menu with super fresh fish and preparations that were so delicious in Oxford. The service was excellent and the ambience was perfect. My wife said her spicy pepper ice cocktail drink was one of the best cocktails she's ever had. I loved the experience. Can't wait to come back for the Mississippi vs LSU game. I'll be sure to drop in to enjoy it all over again. Thanks for a great time! read more

This place does not take reservations so be prepared for a wait. Out estimated wait time was 2 hours - no problem they will send a text. 2.5 hours later we are told there are 5 tables ahead of us. Getting excited (and hungry). 30 minutes later and group after group is being seated ahead of us. We are told our group of 4 is too small for the 6-8 person tables that are be becoming available. 3.5 hours later we are told they are unsure when they can seat us and other large groups continue to go ahead of us. Terrible seating policy!!! We had no choice but to leave. Wasted an entire evening with the family. read more

If you enjoy chicken wings and good sushi- Jinsei has it all in one place for you! I haven't been recently but by memory I recall them having .50 chicken wings once a week and I would find myself going with friends just to eat and enjoy whatever was leftover later. Whenever I would go I would get the same roll (Jari Jari) and always found it delicious. We went to Jinsei during a big football weekend so we knew the lines would be terrible, but we arrived at 4:30 (30 minutes before opening). We finally got in the door to put our name down and we were told it would be a 2.5 hour wait. We sat by the bar and after 3 hours we asked where our table was. The hostesses let us know that there were 4 tables in front of us. We waited another hour (4 hours total) and noticed that a lot of people that were NOT in front of us in the original line beginning to sit down. The hostess named Mary Kathryn was extremely rude the whole time when we would ask about our table and we witnessed her say "if we sit them now, then my friends won't be able to sit and have to wait in line." I actually read a review previously and another customer said he experienced her being very rude also. Long story short, the hostess allowed people to break in line, causing much longer than needed wait times. I hated to see this because it was one of our favourite restaurants and the food is always amazing but be prepared when eating here because after this experience I won't be back. read more

Best in Oxford This place has a great variety of craft drinks, Sake, and sushi. We sampled quite a few of their mixed drinks, all were great. A couple of different kinds of Sake, excellent. For appetizers, I recommend the tempura green beans as well as the yellowtail. Our group also ordered four different rolls that were outstanding. Each was unique with a perfect blend of various fish. Everything was made of fresh, high-quality ingredients that were carefully prepared and artfully presented. The atmosphere is very lite and the service is exceptional. Jinsei is the newest sushi place that has opened in Oxford, MS, and I must say I am fairly impressed! The food is not bad. Having been born and raised on a tropical island, I know what fresh fish should taste like -- and I honestly think that the sushi here is the freshest we have had in town (hopefully this isn't because they just opened!! Hehe). The kodoma tuna and red dragon were delish, but the Atsui and jinsei special didn't impress me much at all. The drinks here are good too! Try the blackberry julep (you can thank me later hehe) The reason why I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is because: 1. We only saw our server twice, for a total of maybe 1 minute (but... it was a Friday dinner crowd) 2. Tables are way too close together... I felt like I was basically rubbing elbows with strangers next to me 3. Music was impossibly loud. Not ideal for a date conversation All in all, not bad! Will give it another try soon :) read more

Amazing!!! We tried the spiro roll, shirohama roll (wasabi yogurt sauce was awesome) , grilled edamame, and seaweed salad. Everything was so good. Their rolls were perfect size- often times at sushi restaurants the rolls are so big you can barely fit a piece in your mouth but that was not at all the case here. Ordered right when the waiter came up and it was barely any wait! I ordered the salmon sashimi which is not pictured as well as the steamed buns. Both were delicious but the steamed buns really stole the show. The buns were perfectly fluffy and the Kobe beef was to die for, nicely seasoned and overall yummy flavor. My first experience in this place was very nice. I came here with a couple friends for the 50 cent wing night which sounded like a great meal to me. Our waitress was great and told us that there was only one choice of flavor for wings, which initially seemed disappointing but she explained that they are a garlic sesame style wing with Sriracha mayo dipping sauce and that sounded good to me. I decided to go with 18 wings (they come in orders of 6) which turned out to be much more than I could eat. The wings are nice and meaty and have a nice crisp skin and tasty seasoning. Jinsei has a great selection of sushi. The Nikko is my favorite, it is fried and has a great combination of flavors with salmon and eel. The red dragon roll has spicy tuna with a fantastic spicy sauce. The California roll is a delicious classic. The entrees are also delicious. The teriyaki salmon salad has a great flavor and the salmon had a great texture. The steamed buns are steak baos and have a great flavor. The yellowtail Serrano is also very good.
