I have been dining at Jim's Steak House for 35 years and Jim's never disappoints. Their house salad with Brittany house dressing, French onion soup and ribeye steak dinner are my 3 go to menu items. I had a fillet that was actually superb. My wife had the sea bass that was a huge disappointment. Though the piece of fish was excellent, it was advertised having a crab meat stuffing that consisted of basically was pinkies worth of crab meat on the top. I would really like to go here to celebrate with my wife but because of all the 1 star reviews and past experience here we just cannot take a chance here with our health or our wallets. Wow! Our Valentines Dinner did not disappoint - I had the Stuffed Chilean Sea Bass with baked potato and my husband had the 20oz bone in ribeye with baked potato. The sea bass filet was a very generous portion and the stuffing was delicious. My husband couldn't get over how amazing his steak was as well as how big the baked potato's were. We both had a salad with the Brittany dressing and my husband said "it's not often I say this is a really good salad". Our server was attentive and so kind. Chewy overcooked steak, stinks, worn out decor, slow service. Won't be going back. Don't get the appeal

First of all, for the $ (12oz filet was $66) one would expect a special experience. The food was decent, the atmosphere would be ok if the place wasn't so worn looking. The carpet smelled. The waitress was ok not great- again for $350 for 3 people I'd expect better. Meat, rolls, baked potato, salad. No veggies included. Cleanliness is poor. Right off the bat the front door handle is filthy. I had to find my waitress after I paid the bill for an itemized check. Nobody was in view so I poked my head into the kitchen. THIS IS WHERE I LEARNED THIS PLACE IS DISGUSTING! Ugly. Filthy wallboard, dirty floor, etc. This was after I had spent $350 on decent enough food (not for $350 however). It made me wonder if I'd end up with food poisoning. Luckily ok so far. Last couple things - the carrot cake was not good (tasted day-old) and the water tasted stale/moldy. I didn't drink it. They tout a special "Brittany" salad dressing. Creamy bacon nothing special about it. Please consider this as a review from a typical customer. We visited Jim's to reminisce about our rehearsal dinner 27 years ago. We continue to find the food delicious and wonder why we don't visit more often, and realize the price point makes it more of a nice meal out. Of course we both started with their house salad with their signature Brittany dressing (always a great start to a meal!). My husband had one of their steak specials that night. The steak was cooked perfectly with great seasoning. It featured mushrooms on top and the sauce he found so irresistible, that he used the bread to enjoy every last drop! Took 15 minutes to even get a water. A glass with literally 4 ice cubes. Menu's were placed on table abruptly. Waitress finally came and asked...Ya know what ya want?". I asked if there were specials for the nite. She rolled her eyes, rattled them off so fast we could barely understand her. I had to even ask if we could order an appetizer. 35 minutes later, appetizer and bread arrive. The whole situation was very uncomfortable. Manager standing in entry way smoking then carrying around a half burnt cigarette through out the restaurant. He even greeted guests this way!. For the type of restaurant this is made out to be, it did not meet the expatations at all. Manager and Waitress had yellowish shirts which quite frankly looked horrible. There were dirty tables left unattended the whole 1 hour 50 minutes we were there. Cobwebs throughout hanging from the lights. Never a water refill or even checked on after we received our food. Regulars are definitely top priority and treated special. Food was average to say the least. Not worth the hype or price! read more

Well it was our last evening in town, 11/4/2025, tues note, so I took my darling wife of 37 yrs to town in big b-n. Jim's Stkhouse was strongly recommended by the ctyd Marriott op mgr so I took the bait and surprised my wife, esp since I was feeling carnivorous almost all day. So, we got Julie as our server who had worked there a number of years and will prob retire there in a few yrs, but she was honest and earnest and that's worth a lot these days. No pianist on a Tuesday nite unfortunately, so we were told. Oh well, on to the dining experience. I ordered the oysters Rockefeller which was a 13 or 14 outta 10 because the taste hit the spot and the temp was very hot coming just outta the oven - you can tell from the taste and from the touch. I did have to ask for some bread given that they placed the butter down with the waters. When the bread came that was fairly warm, not piping hot, but good enuf - kind of a X between a baguette and a focaccia in taste. Then came the house salad which was split and enuf for 2. The dressing shoulda been in a different saucer/container instead of dumped on top because we asked for it on the side but maybe Julie didn't hear it clearly. We went ahead and finished everything and out came the large ribeye also split in two. Liked the flavors and the medium-rare to rare aspect but it came out only warm, and not piping hot. Also quite a bit of gristle that worked my choppers/grinders extracting more juice and flavor with every chew and then finally a big gulp/down the hatch it went... oooh almost forgot to mention the yummy French onion soup as the starting appetizer - that also was a 14-15 outta 10, yummy... so only downside was the ribeye steak was a little gristly and only warm and the bread was only warm, and the salad had a glop of dressing plopped on the middle top which I scraped to the side and added a little of it with each salad bite. Overall, I'd give it a 4.8-4.9 which would round up to 5 stars for those of you who are more conceptual big pic math types rather than some of us anal nit-picky detail oriented types. It is what it is/it ain't what it ain't & I call it as I see it. Enjoy your dinner there, bottom line is - we did, and we had some for lunch the next day on a $125 bill. I made a reservation for 13 people and the dinner was excellent. They were very helpful at the time of making the reservation and gave us a semi private room. We were a loud bunch and given the location, we didn't disturb any of their other guests. The service was excellent and the food was very good also. No one in our group had anything negative to say about their meal. The drinks were also excellent! The atmosphere reminds me of an old supper club. It has a great feel and hope they don't change it. The ribeye was good. The baked potato was cold. The ambiance is very dated. The staffed was not dressed for a finer dining place. But the BIGGEST reason for the 2 stars is the overpowering smell. I stopped in on a business trip and had a ribeye, rice pilaf and house salad. The bread was good and the highlight of the meal. The side salad was iceberg lettuce with a TUB of their house sauce. Bland. Tasted like sour cream. The steak was cooked properly (med rare) but was somehow tough and chewy. Decently seasoned. The rice pilaf was rock hard and had to switch it out for a loaded baked potato. That was ok. Kind of bland. The only good things about the trip was the bartender who made some good old fashioneds . Steak was aged and tasted like it was cooked correctly but there were major issues with other parts of our dining experience. We sat upstairs and there was a slight odor of urine in the air. I spoke to waitress that dropped off drinks for us and she was rude at first. Then we ordered, my menu looked greasy and looked fairly dirty. The glasses were dirty as well, I held my glass at the bottom portion and it looked dirty. Mac & cheese was not seasoned and tasted like something had gone bad and they still sent it to the table. Mushrooms were okay, they were lacking something but were served cold. The baked potato was at best like warm and tasted like it was from the day before. It broke off in pieces and instead flaky/fresh. The service was alright, we will not be returning. My hope is that they actually listen to constructive feedback to fix the issues and match the level of experience with the price point they have set. Another thing the chef/souf chef is not seasoning the food/sides enough. The bland salad looked flat and was not displayed well. We did not say anything while we were there because we didn't want them thinks we were trying to get a free meal. We even tipped the waitress at 20%. This not worth what they are as most likely fine dining because of the quality of the experience as a whole. Please fix these issues and we will come back at some point. Thank you read more

This is a conflicting review. I'll start with the positives. Neat ambiance. It's old school but that's what you want in a classic steakhouse. It feels like you're stepping into a movie scene with a dimly lit room as a group of gentlemen discuss their plot to steal the secret recipe to Coca Cola. I digress but you understand. Service was fine. Very friendly and my water glass was never less than half full. Food was wonderful! Steak was perfectly done and has a wonderful crust due to the dry age process. You can taste the difference as clearly as driving a Pinto vs a Mustang. It is a whole new ball game. Now the negatives. The bill. I know it is a nice steak house and that's requires me to pay, however I felt for the size of the meat, it was a little on the steep side. Additionally, it was a paper pad with a small scribble that was completely unreadable. I am not the guy to ask line by line what is on my bill. I'm an adult, I'll pay but it seemed rather excessive for the meal I received. More so I have no idea how much anything cost. I guess you have to trust them. Additionally, the salad with The Brittany dressing, was good however it was full of brown wilted lettuce. I ate around it. Butter was also cold. Steak knife was cheap and from a Waffle House it seemed. I like Waffle House by the way but for $10 I expect cheap cutlery. I didn't expect it here and it definitely cost more than $10. These are extremely small details but for the prices they charge, these details matter. If you're going to charge what the big boys charge, you gotta step it up with the details. Wasn't fond of their Old-fashioned but was able to return the drink and get something else. Live music was a nice touch. This was our first time at Jim's Steakhouse and our first time in Bloomington, Illinois. Bloomington was the perfect halfway point for meeting up with our daughter and her husband. They live in Indiana. We live in Wisconsin. So we were in town for one evening and Jim's looked like a lovely place for us to meet up and have dinner. We were so glad we did! Brook was our server and did an amazing job! She knew the menu well and explained the specials clearly. Her service was spot on for the entire meal. We shared a calamari appetizer- the best ever! I ordered a salmon/grilled shrimp special with a tasty cream sauce. The rest had steaks. We upgraded our sides to try the au gratin potatoes, the fried potatoes and the creamed spinach. The portions were incredibly generous that we shared everything. Hats off to the chefs! There was truly no room for dessert. Thank you Brook for a lovely evening! Wasn't sure what to expect for our first visit. Decor is extremely dated; you walk in to what we had to assume was the entrance as it wasn't clearly labeled as such. Quickly greeted and seated... with a dirty napkin and knife. Not off to a good start. On to the drinks- for as an establishment not listing prices on your cocktail menu, I would expect a bit more than cheap garnishes and a bit more flare. They do make other cherries than Maraschino & oranges love a good twist! Tiffany was your saving grace- she was an Angel of a server. Salad was decent but dated and arrived on a hot plate. Boo!! Prime rib special was inedible. For a place known for their meat, this was a disgrace, so chewy. Presentation was meh. Came here to celebrate my husbands birthday. I had dropped off a cake earlier in the day to be brought out after we had finished dinner. I will say that our waitress already knew about it and brought it out after dinner. That's when I noticed that the cake was smashed on one side. It was a taller-than-usual cake so the bakery hadn't closed the top, just taped the sides and wrapped it in plastic wrap. There was some sort of mishap after I had dropped it off - for whatever reason, the top of the cake box was closed and once side was ruined. No one offered an explanation or apologized for it happening. That put a slight damper on the night - it was more annoying than anything. That being said, the over all service was great. Our waitress as attentive and helpful with recommendations. We had the calamari and oysters Rockefeller to start. While the oysters were delicious the calamari was poorly seasoned and the dipping sauce is a sweet/chili Asian style sauce which didn't compliment the calamari. The NY strip steak and Prime Rib we ordered were cooked to perfection. The sides were a let down though. I read in a few reviews that the Mac N Cheese was amazing but ours tasted sweet which was not appetizing. The Cottage Fries, were just potatoes cut in circles and deep fried (not seasoned well). I'd suggest getting something other than the fries, like maybe the mashed potatoes or au gratin potatoes. Everyone here talks about the Brittnay dressing so I was looking forward to that but we were informed that it has bacon so couldn't try it. Over all, its a place we'd go again because the steak was amazing. Hopefully we'll have better luck with the sides. read more

I was in town for business and I try to eat local. I was in the mood for a really good steak. This place looks like a dump on the outside but has a nice ambiance inside. The server came right away with water. I asked about sides and he told me that my potato could not be substituted for a different side( I cannot eat starch) unless I wanted to buy it. That was OK with me. I told him I wasn't quite ready to order. 25 minutes later I still had not seen my server. Other tables had been seated and orders taken. I decided I would go to outback down the street and get a mediocre steak but I knew I would get good service. This is also the only outback I have written a review for as it is over the top on good service. No one acknowledged me leaving or thanked me for coming. I have Ruth's Chris, III Forks, Mortons, Charley's and other places that have the price point and similar menu as Jim's. The exceptional service and great food is pretty consistent at these places and I had expected it from Jim's. Currently I am at the Outback down the road and my meal has been served. read more

Jim's has been around Bloomington/Normal for a very long time and few people remember it as the Brittany. The namesake of Jim's famous salad dressing. Had steak tonight the larger prime rib came with baked potato and a choice soup or the Brittany Salad (choose the name sake). Prices are steep so be prepared but it is a great experience fantastic service and a classy atmosphere - even though it is an old establishment and gives that old time feel - it is clean and fresh. read more

I made a reservation during a weekday which was rather easy over the phone. Attentive service upon arrival. We had a great server who was very knowledgeable about specials, and patient with my guest and I as we perused the menu. Chicken noodle soup was delicious and so was the asparagus. Excellent sautéed mushrooms! I could eat 2 portions of it. The filet mignon was grilled correctly and it was a great cut. Easily, had leftovers. It had nice char to it but it lacked flavor. Rather bland and for steakhouse prices, I wasn't too impressed. We also shared a slice of cheesecake which was delicious. The interior is rather large but the furniture is rather dated. It looks like a clubhouse, just an old style one in need of remodeling. My biggest complaint was the restroom. It was small with just one stall and one urinal. Also, it smelled like sitting water and mildew. Something about their drain or pipes caused it to smell that way because it was very clean. Nothing was luxurious about that restroom. It was like I was transported to a bar or diner restroom. However, I would like to end on a good note. The server was phenomenal. Constantly, she checked up on us and made our night enjoyable. It was my first time to dine at Jim's over Thanksgiving, and I was impressed with the decor, and the service. Outside the restaurant seems rustic and a regular barn house, but inside is beautifully decorated with elegant wooden structure, and interesting art work selections. They offered tranditonal Thanksgiving meal on that thursday, with turkey or ham options. Most of the dishes tasted great, and the portion was huge. I particulary enjoyed their stuffing, mashed potatos, and pumplin pie! They also carry a great selections of steak. Would love to returen again for an occasion to try them out. read more

Entrees and sides were very good. Salad was a little wilted and covered in way too much dressing. The employees didn't seem to know they worked in an expensive restaurant. The hostess was wearing clothes that made her look like she just spent the day at the beach. The server had the enthusiasm and warmth of a fast food cashier having a bad day. If you like live music tunes of Frank Sinatra played on a baby grand piano, a soft lit room with great food and service not to mention one of the best Old Fashioneds I have ever had, this is your place. If your a young hipster looking for the latest fashion food, frankly, not your place. My wife and I come here because it reminds me of how a steakhouse should be and it's a relaxing atmosphere. We have always had good service and the meal portions for us are just right. My only criticism is regarding their sea scallops on their appetizer. While the flavor was good, the scallops were way overcooked. I am from New Hampshire so honestly, I tend to be very critical of seafood in the Midwest.
