Unfortunately, this one needs to be dialed down to a single star, at least as far as I'm concerned. I'd been taking my vehicles here for quite some time, everything from oil changes to brakes and suspension work, new radiator, coolant flushes, fluid flushes and everything in between, both big and small. I was a happy and repeat, high spending customer that never quibbled on cost, spared no expense and even referred friends and colleagues to this shop after many stellar experiences. I don't think I ever had a single "go back" and the work has always been top notch, detail oriented and superbly competent. So why, you might ask, am I now updating to a 1-star for this place? Well, mainly because my years of loyal and lucrative patronage was rewarded with a colossal slap in the face. I don't know if it's because the owner took on more fleet work on the side or what he has going on, but somewhere along the lines he decided that his customers were no longer the priority. Some time ago, I had tried to schedule a simple oil change, and was told I'd still have to drop it off, even with an appointment first thing in the morning when they open. Not wanting to foot the bill for a ride share from and back to the shop, I asked if I could just hang around until it was done, seeing as how they have a dedicated waiting room and for years that has never been an issue. After all, how long can an oil change take when you have an appointment first thing in the morning? At this point, the owner told me that no, I can't wait in the waiting room and that he probably needs the car all day. For an oil change? When I'm the first appointment of the day? Incredulous, I asked how that can be and get told "I'm not set up for having people wait right now. I have other cars to work on and lunch to get." Pray tell, if I'm the first appointment of the day, how would you be working on someone else's car(s) already? And for that matter, what's the point of an 'appointment' if it's now just a glorified 'drop off time' and all you can tell me is that it'll be done by 6pm when you close? Sorry but that's just asinine. While it pained me to do it, I nevertheless informed the owner that if I wasn't welcome to wait in the waiting room anymore, I couldn't see myself continuing to spend several thousand dollar a year (per vehicle) at his place. He thanked me for my past patronage but was unmoved, so I cut him loose and will never return nor recommend his shop to anyone again. I don't know what happened at this place and I wish him all the best, but I have a rule about spending hard earned money with people that make it obvious that they don't need or want my business. read more

I have an older SUV that I took to Jim believing the fuel pump might have died. Jim took the time to run all the tests and even determined that some prior work done to the gas tank was not done correctly and he offered solutions to get it back up and running. If you want attention to detail on the what is being done to your vehicle, go see Jim. I have dealt with many repair shops over the course of my life, and not once have I come across someone like Jim that knows on an old 2004 vehicle you just want to see if it will run again. It's very unusual for me to give one star but Jim's Auto service earned this one. I couldn't bring my vehicle in on Friday but I had a scheduled service on Monday so we arrived on Monday, and Jim gives us really a cold reception. He said, I thought you were going to bring it in on Friday, and I said No I just couldn't make it last week. Maybe that's how he treats all of his customers and we should accept it? I wanted a second opinion on a quote and took it to Jims Auto Service on Friday. He noticed the radiator wasn't the issue and fixed what was. As he drove my car around his shop to return it to me on Wednesday, he mentioned the 'Check Engine' light came on and had just noticed it. He called me the next day, Thursday, to tell me the sensor would be $250 including labor. I asked him if he tested it originally and he said "No, because I had nothing to believe it would have been an issue." But, if it would have been tested originally when it was swapped from one part to another, it would have been included in the original labor cost. I told him I didn't want the part and would be picking my car up after 5. I came to his shop and he told me I didn't tell him I was picking my car up today and that he would have to "throw away $140" because he put the part in the car anyways for "diagnosis." So, I asked him to take the part out and I would pay for the labor. Side note: When I asked him Wednesday how much the part would be he told me he would have to find out what was wrong, then order it, have it delivered and put it in. In my opinion, that means he did not have it. During our phone call on Thursday, he never mentioned he had the part or that he installed it for "diagnosis". Like many other reviewers, I also found Jim on Yelp. It's rare to find an auto repair shop with all "5 Star" reviews. I needed new brakes and e-mailed Jim for help. Jim (the owner) was very responsive and helpful. He took a quick look and said that the damages were to the rear brakes and not the front like I thought, and he was right. He ordered the parts, and we set up a time for me to bring the car in. Car was done on time, and on budget. Great job, Jim! Nice to find an honest, friendly car mechanic. read more

Thank god for yelp or I never would of found Jim. I have been researching shops and prices since mid-December for my Honda. I almost cried tears of joy from the amount of stress Jim fixed in less than 3 hours. - He is knowledgeable, honest and straight forward about everything. - He saved me a butt load of time & money: I was told by the dealer that my Honda needed a new ignition switch, cylinder, new keys & the whole car rekeyed and some other mumbo jumbo. I talked to 6-8 different shops the prices ranged from $1,200 - $650 along with a week or more to fix. Jim's price and assessment: Towed my car to him, 45 mins later he had a rock solid estimate, explanation and made sure I was comfortable with it before he proceeded with the work. $425.00 and would be ready at the end of the day! He was able to tell me the items that I REALLY needed instead of all those add on's the dealer wanted to shove down my throat. Also, my battery was dead from sitting so long, he charged it up so it was good to go when I got there. I'm used to a mechanic who would of put a new $90 battery on my tab before even trying to see if it would take a charge. I'm sure my eyes were huge and mouth was hanging open like a dummy the whole time! I was in shock that I found such a great mechanic! I HIGHLY recommend him to everyone! He will be the only mechanic my family uses from now on. I was referred to Jim's Auto Service by a friend. From that moment on, I have not taken my car anywhere else. I have had horrible experiences with other auto mechanics. They haven't been trusting, overcharge for services and generally felt taken advantage of at previous places. It has been completely different experience at Jim's Auto Service. He takes the time to answer all of my questions, gives me service I trust and refers me other trusted auto mechanics when needed (example: specialist on tranmissions). I recently took my car in that was having multiple issues that needed to be looked at, including the transmission. After reviewing all my issues and letting me know what should be done, he referred me to a transmission specialist he trusts. The tranmissions specialist took my car for a test drive and let me know what the potential issue was and general cost it would take to fix . The reason I am blown away by this service besides the honest answers is that they did not charge me. That kind of customer service doesn't happen often and everyone should know you get that kind of service with Jim. read more

I thought I had some problems with my brakes so I went to ask how much it will cost but he took his time to make a test drive for me and said that it seems okay. Definitely goes the extra mile for his customers!! I first contacted Jim based off of Yelp reviews back in 2014, but after the initial meeting, I knew he was an honest mechanic. About 5 months ago, my Fiancee was involved in a pretty bad wreck; it destroyed the front right wheel/brake configuration. I had the tow truck drop it off at his place at 1 AM (I don't trust the given insurance repair location), and the next day, I receive a call from Jim with an update on the car. Unfortunately, we had to go through the insurance company to get it fixed, and even though they weren't covering all the damages, Jim somehow made it work to where we didn't pay but $100 out of pocket! The insurance company kind of haggled with him about covering the damages, but Jim always kept a positive attitude and did his best work! He was constantly in touch with us regarding the process, was very honest about parts & pricing and I am definitely going to be a repeat customer! I had another great experience at this shop. My daughter's car started making an unusual creaking noise that sounded like it was coming from the rear suspension. We took the car to Peoria Kia and they initially completely misdiagnosed the issue (said the spare tire and jack were loose), and when I pressed them to check again they came up with a $500+ estimate to replace rear bushings. Not trusting their diagnosis, we took the car to Jim and within an hour he called to tell me that the fix was a loose bolt that required half a turn, at no charge. I cannot stress enough how satisfying it is to work with an auto repair shop that does great work at a fair price and, most importantly, that you can trust. I was looking for an independent mechanic in my area. I found Jim's Auto Service via YELP. I explained what another shop said needed to be done and Jim checked over my car completely and suggested what actually needed to be done. Not what the other shop had suggested. Jim also suggested I return with my car to the other shop because a water pump gasket was leaking and had between replaced less then 2 months ago. The other shop agreed to fix the problem. Yes!! He has my business as long as I have a car!! Very reliable, real and non-shifty mechanic. I've been working on cars for a while, but just don't have the space to do my repairs anymore. And most mechanics just overly diagnose from the get go to try and get as much money from you... Not Jim though, if you specifically tell him what you want done, he'll do just that.
