Hard to believe but Jimmy's has been serving up diner food and ice cream since 1954. We couldn't pass up a chance to check out what was beneath that orange roof. The orange booths inside reminded me of the 1970s, but seemed newer. The walls are decorated with kitschy country decor. The sign outside claimed the best Bar-B-Q in Indiana, so I decided to give their BBQ sandwich a try with fries and coleslaw. The sandwich was large with lots of saucy sweet pork. The was a slight tang to the sauce, which was good. The fries were crispy and hot. The side of coleslaw was small but creamy and tasty. In response to peer pressure and my lack of self control, I finished my meal off with a tangerine soft serve cone. A small cone was $4. The ice cream was perfectly refreshing and delicious (and the best part of the stop). The staff seemed tired and frustrated, and didn't waste time with pleasantries. Maybe they were understaffed as they worked both a walk up window and inside patrons. Tables needed to be wiped clean, but cleaning didn't happen during our visit. Overcharged! I ordered 4 small ice cream, 2 cups and 2 cones. All 4 with tangerine. So it should've been $3.18+.55 for the tangerine × 4 +tax. So should've been about $15 and i was charged $21.38! I received my ice cream and the strawberry was hard, hand dipped. I was NOT informed that the strawberry soft serve was out or that I'd be charged more. The group in front of us ordered chocolate soft serve and was told the chocolate didn't work so they ordered something else. read more

We decided to drive to Jimmie's Dairy Bar the other day. A tangerine cone dipped in chocolate was calling my name! It was a pretty day for a drive from Greenfield. Walked up and got our cones, which are very generous servings! Then we drove around back to take pictures. Of the tables I had mentioned in a previous review. There is inside eating, some outdoor eating and of course order at the walk up window and eat in your vehicle. The outdoor area is shady and a chance to get out and stretch your legs. I'm a super fan of local and old school and drive throughs and diners, so when I happened upon Jimmie's Dairy Bar in Pendleton, I had to try it! The signs everywhere say "Best BBQ in Indiana" so of course that is what I had to try. I got the bbq sandwich and a side of french fries. I did the drive through (had my dog in the car with me) and then ate in the parking lot. The drive through line did not take long at all. My food was hot. The fries were good but a little disappointing because in the sense that most were all short nubs. The bbq sandwich was good -- but, best in Indiana? hmmmm, not so sure about that. It was good but not great. A little smashed in my packaging. Also, it had mushrooms in it. This does not bother me, I like mushrooms, but I know many people do not like mushrooms. This wasn't really called out anywhere. I know if my sister had gotten a bbq sandwich with mushrooms in it, she would have completely thrown it out. I was there on a cold day and not in the mood for ice cream, so I did not have any of that. So, the ambiance is fun and the food is ok. This is one of our long standing, regular go to place for sandwiches and ice cream! They have many delicious ice cream concoctions. But for me, there is only one variety? And that is the tangerine ice cream . A simple cone is all I need! They have great hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and known for their Barbecue.Also old fashioned malts, shakes and sodas. We like to sit at the picnic tables in bCk during warm weather. Great service at the walk-up windows or drive thru. read more

I stopped at Jimmie's Dairy Bar the other day and went through the drive-thru. I ordered a sloppy Joe sandwich, onion rings, tangerine ice cream, and a soft drink. The wait is always pretty long here. I really used to like coming here but the food was pretty lackluster the last couple times. The sloppy Joe was lukewarm and wasn't great. The onion rings had too much breading but were crunchy. The best thing about the stop was the tangerine ice cream as always. It tastes like a push up in soft serve form. I will definitely go back again for the ice cream and maybe next time try something on the menu I have not tried before. read more

I've been eating here since 1975. They support the community with baseball sponsors. I play with their name twice while growing up. Still make trips just to get the soft serve tangerine ice cream. Ols style walk-up window. The service is always great. Stop by and enjoy some history. The Coke cola still taste like the 80's. read more

I hate it when I find a place I love that I've been passing by for years and never tried! I stopped in the "Hardy's" (chain) to look at their menu but didn't see anything that grabbed me. Then I remembered seeing the sign in front of Jimmy's Ice Cream across the road--"Best BBQ in Indiana". Yeah right. (Oh ye of little faith.) I decided to go in and try it and it probably IS the best BBQ in Indiana! Not the real spicy kind, but a mild but delicious sauce and absolutely the world's most tender, melt in your mouth meat! Previously I had noticed this place, but thought it was just a walk up ice cream place. I didn't even know they had places to sit inside or foods other than ice cream. Now I have to go back to try their Pork Tenderloin sandwich and the Coney Island Hot Dog. I had room for a small sundae and got a Black Raspberry sundae over soft serve ice cream--totally yummy! No wonder this place has been here since the 50's!! They have picnic tables outside where you can sit on to eat also. 8/22--Had the Coney Dog--kind of salty but good. Also breaded mushrooms, not nearly as good as what I got at Sahm's. Cherry malt was divine. 8/25--Sloppy Joe reminde me of the ones my mother used to make. This is a place where the food is fine, but the reason you go is to soak up the history and small town atmosphere. Oh, and the tangerine soft serve. They proudly proclaim "Best BBQ in Indiana" but, honestly? It's not that great. It's more of a sloppy joe-ish type sauce on pork. My wife and I just ate at Jimmy's and were very disappointed in the food. We have been going to Jimmy's for 50 years. The portions were skimpy and the BBQ didn't taste the same. I had been doing some commute work requiring me to drive through Pendleton and Anderson for several weeks. I asked around for the best local restaurants and frequently heard that I should give Jimmie's a try. I visited the establishment 3 separate times. In total, I ordered the chicken sandwich, the bbq sandwich, fries, vanilla shake, fried mushrooms, and two strawberry crunch ice cream cones. The sandwiches were okay, I had the chicken sandwich, I believe you could add toppings for additional prices so I stuck with the plan and found it bland. My husband said the bbq sandwhich was okay, he had had better though. The breading from the mushrooms fell off easily, but I also know mushrooms are a tricky item to coat. The vanilla shake was plain, as vanilla is, but I would probably choose a Frosty over it. The best item by far is the ice cream with the crunch coat. Everyone says the tangerine flavor is the signature item, I opted for the strawberry flavor instead. You can add a crunch coat with is a lovely mix of sprinkles and other ingredients. I'm unsure if the crunch coat has peanuts, but as my daughter has a severe peanut allergy , I was happy that I had gone to the restaurant solo. I felt like I tasted peanuts in the crunch coat, but I can't be sure. If so, I'd definitely recommend a warning that the added crunch coat contains peanuts. If I went back, it would be to try the tangerine ice cream with crunch coat or order the strawberry ice cream again. I wouldn't order the meals. read more

Oh my gosh! What a great place to cool off with a cool treat. We stopped cause the sign advertised pumpkin shakes and then we didn't even get one! I mean, it was like eighty degrees out and pumpkins were far out of our minds. I had a vanilla malt with extra malt. They must use liquid malt like DQ does, which in my opinion is a major BUMMER for malt fans, because that crunchy stuff in the bottom of your shake is the whole reason for malting it up in the first place! My kid had the strawberry shortcake shake and she loved it. The sign says the best barbeque in Indiana, but with most likely 700 calories in beverage alone, i didn't try it. Stopped by today for the famous BBQ and tangerine ice cream. The BBQ was good but very different than I am used to in Kentucky. The BBQ had mushrooms in it which is new to me. We use to go all the time until the last two times there was no ice cream in the cone bottoms. It was sitting on the top of the cone. We asked why our cones weren't filled and their reply was we don't do that unless you ask". So apparently they will cheat you out of your ice cream if you don't ask to not be cheated. What a crock!! By far, worst dining experience I've had, so bad as to make me download yelp on my phone and create an account to write a review. If I could give it zero stars that would be too many. To start, the wait for the food was nearly 15 minutes, which is far too long for two burgers and two fries. The burgers failed to be correct on either one, the buns were chared black, and the fries were cold undercooked. The staff is so absent headed that we took the food back to address their service I ended up leaving the bag of failed food at the order window because they were too concerned with the one car in the drive thru to notice me. Compared to Jimmie's, McDonald's is the apex of modern dining, crafted by God himself. Barbecue is the only thing we ever bought at Jimmies, often going out of our way from Chesterfield to get them. They were a must have when our son came home. Not anymore. The recipe has somehow been altered (too much cinnamon), changing the taste and they seem dry even though the bun seems to have been dipped in sauce a la Arts roast beef. When we pulled in in our stealthy little Prius we ended up chatting with the guy in the big damn pickup next to us; at the end of it he talked up Jimmy's barbecue sandwiches (he was eating one at the time), and mentioned that they put mushrooms in it, so we figured we'd try some despite not being big barbecue fans. It seemed more like pulled pork than actual barbecue to me; it was shreds of pork in some kind of sour-tangy sauce with the aforementioned mushrooms. It wasn't bad, but not particularly to our tastes. My fried fish sandwich was HOT out of the fryer, as were the fried mushrooms, which came with no dipping sauce and were slightly overdone. We got a parfait and an ice cream sundae, in "normal" flavours (vanilla and chocolate) and there really nothing to distinguish it from Dairy Queen or any other soft-serve restaurant. read more
