A disappointing visit after reading so many great reviews. In hindsight, I should have filtered by date. I waited a while at my car after flipping the button on the menu board. The young woman who came out told me she only came out because they weren't busy. I told her it wasn't an issue and I was fine ordering inside. Maybe this was obvious to everyone else but if the in-car ordering wasn't available they should remove it from the menu board. It seemed odd to have customers walk in to order then have food carried out to my car, which is what happened. The patio seating is enclosed so there is seating "indoors". I think that would've been a better option. I was excited about their sourcing from Tyner Pond but don't think they do this anymore. The fries definitely did not match any description I read and I definitely was not expecting a small bag of crinkle cut fries. These are not worth ordering for $3. I ordered a double burger but a single would've been fine-it was quite large. It was good, but I wish the onion was sliced thinner- it made the whole thing difficult to hold and was just a lot of onion. The root beer is Sprecher's on tap. Overall a disappointment. And no second bun. when I called the store they informed me that they shut down the ordering because they had too many orders and they wouldn't make it right. she told me I'd have to eat somewhere else. she also advised me to call DoorDash and tell them my entire order was wrong and they would refund all my money. To each his own. While the old fashioned drive up environment was the draw, it was hard to find a place to park. A testimony to its farm fresh food, I told myself as we squeezed into a parallel spot added on the side. Service was slower if you stayed in your vehicle. They warned you up front that it was. But it took way too long and after thirty minutes without anyone taking our order I could tell your best bet was to go inside and get it. But ordering at the car was supposed to be the reason for trying it (Fun?) so, we stayed put. My only comment after the food finally arrived thirty minutes after ordering is greasy! Stopped here for a quick dinner while driving through the area. So worth it! Fresh homemade food, fun outdoor heated patio, and wonderful staff members who were super helpful. First time here and I was very impressed! The food was made fresh upon ordering. Locally sourced ingredients were used. Homemade ice cream too...yum! Get the ice cream in a handmade shake! Excellent consistency, not too thick or thin. Really enjoyed my burger, it wasn't over cooked. Delicious! My spouse ate the breaded tenderloin and said it was amazing. You've got to try their root beer! It's definitely in the top three I've ever tasted. I also got the jalapeño poppers. They were very very tasty. They came with ranch. Be advised they do charge $.50 for the ranch. This was not a problem. It's just it wasn't mentioned when I ordered. What if I didn't like ranch? The mac & cheese was also very tasty. Creamy and full of cheese. I will say for a side order it was extremely small. I would rather pay a couple dollars more and have a larger size. It's like three or four bites. You pull up to a menu board and flip the switch to have someone come and take your order. The young lady that came to take our order was a five-star waitress. Loved the atmosphere and history of the place, however I was less than impressed by the food. It was decent but not as good as I was hoping or expecting it to be. Fries were soggy. Onion rings were the best with what we ordered and 'draft' root beer. All high school kids running the place and one girl was doing most of the work and keeping busy while the boys were chatting and making the food. Ice cream flavors were limited and not very good. Great experience and food. We came on a very cold day and anticipated wearing our coats in the covered patio. While it wasn't a toasty 80 degrees, between the insulating cover and the multiple heaters, it was comfortable enough to leave the gloves and coats in the car. They have a big Connect Four game and at least in December, they have an area with a Christmas trees, a small table, and pictures, crayons, and a mailbox to make pictures and mail them to Santa. The food was all really good. I had the sweet potato fries and burger. The pickles are obviously house made. My daughter had chicken fingers, also made in house, and the mac and cheese. I can only assume it was delicious because she said it was great and refused to share. Pro tip - get the tenderloin and put the extra breading on top of the mac and cheese for a great crunch. Speaking of, hubby got the tenderloin and thankfully was willing to share. It was thick but all the silverskin was removed, so it was nice and tender and easy to eat. The kiddo and I agreed that the amount and freshness of the garlic on the garlic fries was a bit much for us, but the hubster loved them. Two stars because the workers were really nice and hard workers, if not for them it'd get 1 star. I got the pork tenderloin, it was huge but no flavor. Small hamburger bun with wilted lettuce, tomato and a lot of red onion. I also got garlic fries. All you can taste was the fresh chopped garlic. My neice got the hotdog, it was small, regular hotdog. She ores fries with it, she said they were just ok. But then there was also 2 extra bags of fries in our bag, we assumed the sandwich's came with fries but we weren't told that and ordered fries, it would have been nice to have known that. The fried mushrooms were also bland. The root beer was nasty, it didn't taste anything like root beer and left a bad aftertaste. I dumped it and got water. The Mug works closely with Tyner Pond Farm, an Indiana-based farm that is my go-to for grass-fed, pasture-raised local meat. It's awesome that The Mug gets its beef, chicken and pork from Tyner Pond. I feel like you can really taste the difference in their food. Three of us got burgers and one of us got a hot dog, and all of us loved our food. The burgers were tender and juicy. I got a bacon cheeseburger, and the bacon was crisp but not too crisp. You know what I mean? You want your bacon to have some substance to stand up to the rest of the burger, but you also don't want the bacon to be too crispy and ruin the overall texture of the burger. Well, this bacon was just right. We also got fries, and there are two choices: fresh-cut fries (which have the potato skin on them) and French fries, which are extra crispy. We got one of each, I think both were very good, but I preferred the fresh-cut fries because you could actually taste the potato. The Mug is one of those old-fashioned restaurants where you can still get car service. So you drive up, push a button when you're ready to order, and a person comes out and takes your order. Then they bring your food to your car. The Mug is a great restaurant to visit right now, during our strange pandemic times, because you get the benefits of leaving your house and experiencing something new, but you also don't have to leave the comfort and safety of your car. It's a win-win. Oh, I almost forgot: The Mug serves speciality root beer. It's actually really great root beer, so you should get some if you're in the mood for quality root beer. I'm not a root beer connoisseur, so what the heck do I know, but I thought it was good. One thing you might want to keep in mind is that, if you decide to order and eat in your car like we did, there will be hella bees trying to get in your car when you eat. I feel like the bees know that they have easy access to people and their sweet food at this location, so they've adapted to using this location as their epicenter. We had to swat away so many bees that came into our open car windows! At one point, after my two sons were screaming because a bee came into our car, I finally closed the window, and we watched as the bees tapped their yellow bodies against our windows like small nectar-seeking zombies. I noticed a few reviews mention the atmosphere and how nice this place is during the warmer times. We went when it was rainy and cold, do not recommend, unless you have on a good coat. The restaurant is clean and spacious. There's an indoor area with a bit of bar style seating, but we opted for the covered outer area instead. I'd describe the food to be like standard concession stand fare but leveled up. We ordered a burger, a hotdog, fries, a shake, and a grilled cheese sandwich. I wasn't sure what kind of grilled cheese to get, so I asked the cashier for her recommendation. She suggested white cheddar and apple slices. This is not something I would make myself, but the combination was delicious. Portions are a bit small, so we ate everything and then ordered more fries. We got some, it was good and refreshing, but nothing special, and a bit overpriced. Service is at your car, or you can go inside to order, and sit at a table (I think there were some both inside and outside.) Prices were a bit high, but not awful. Except in the case of one of the items we ordered: the corn and bacon bowl. Now, it was $3, so I didn't expect much, but when a condiment container arrived, I literally did a double take, reread the menu, and immediately took a picture. Because, no, folks, that is not a bowl. Still, it was good stuff- corn, bacon, onions, tasty. Just, way way waaaaaayyy less than I expected. Three bites. Come on. We all giggled. Sweetie got the fries with pork, and they were great, and a substantial portion. Perfectly cooked fries, flavorful, tender pork, and good slaw. Yum. Everybody enjoyed this, and there was no laughter. I took a little road trip about 40 mins east of Indianapolis and was not disappointed when I arrived at The Mug in Greenfield, IN. If you're coming from the interstate you will want to turn into the first entrance since it's a one way. Thanks google for sending me in the exit. They have outside dining only and it looks like you can order from your car a la old school drive in. The staff are super friendly and they had a few oversized games on the patio like connect four and Jenga. There was also some corn hole boards set up. All the meat is locally raised from Tyner Pond Farm which means you are getting the freshest meat around since the farm is only 20 mins away. You can visit the farm as well and check out how they operate. The Breaded Tenderloin* This bad mama jamma had the perfect breading to meat ratio, came out hot and fresh as everything is made to order, and seasoned to perfection! I had lettuce, pickle, onion, bacon, white cheddar, mayo, and mustard and all these flavors mingled and intertwined into a beautiful medley that exploded with flavor! The Garlic Fries* Since this is an outside dining only restaurant your food comes out in a brown paper bag and the first thing I could smell before the bag was even opened were the garlic fries. I have never had garlic fries like these. The fries were lightly breaded it seemed and covered in a garlicky herb goodness. I was visiting a friend in Greenfield and were were having a difficult time deciding what to have to supper. He mentioned The Mug in a manner as to downplay the place as if he thought I wouldn't like it. "It's just a drive in burger joint." Let me tell you, it's not just a a burger joint. They have some great looking ice cream and some interesting menu items. I have some serious dietary restrictions, so I opted for the grilled tenderloin sandwich. It was really good. Slightly overcooked and under seasoned, but dang tasty. It normally comes with lettuce tomato and onions, but since I don't like and can't eat onion, I chose lettuce, tomato, pickle and mustard. The sandwich was huge. My friend got the breaded tenderloin and he broke off a piece for me to compare. The breaded is much better. It had a lot more seasoning and the breading helped keep the juices in better. Next time, I'll get it breaded. I almost wish the sandwiches weren't so huge so I could have tried the crème brûlée ice cream. Maybe next time. read more

I hate to speak poorly of the mug- we have been customers since moving to the area, about 3 years ago. They closed for the winter and upon reopening, the quality has gone down quite a bit. The fresh cut fries are no longer on the menu, the fries they did have were limp and saturated in grease. The onion rings were similarly greasy. I am unsure if they are still sourcing local meats and if they are still frying in lard- the menu no longer mentions these things. We loved supporting local while simultaneously eating better meat and avoiding seed oils. I am hoping that things improve, and i intend to inquire about the meat sourcing and frying oil. The Mug used to be one of my favorite places to eat, that was until it reopened under new ownership. It only took one visit under the new ownership to know that I would not be going back. The quality is no longer there and it appears the owners care more about profit margins than the food they serve. The garlic fries were soggy and greasy. It was almost as though they drown them in a garlic oil prior to serving them. The breaded tenderloin is about a third of the size it used to be but they still have the picture hanging up inside showing the former jumbo tenderloin. When I brought this to the managers attention she didn't have an explanation. I asked for a refund for my order and the manager did it but then said she wasn't sure it went through. Told me to check my bank account and if it doesn't show up in a few days to call her. I let it go for a week before I called. I ended up having to go back and she gave me a cash refund. read more

Came here as part of my tour of Indiana pork tenderloin sandwiches. Of them all, The Mug's version had the most impressive meat. That's due in part because the meat is seasoned with garlic and parprika before breading and frying in lard, but also because the pigs are sustainably and humanely-raised, drug-free. The result was a tenderloin that had a very porky flavor that I enjoyed. I had some issues with the bun and the Mug Style finish. While most other places use brioche buns, The Mug uses an inferior bun. Perhaps that could be chalked up to the sandwich's lower price point vs. the competition. Less understandable was charging $1 for "Mug Style" where the sandwich is topped with some roughly chopped cabbage and four jalapenos. Both add depth of flavor to the sandwich, but the use of rough chopped cabbage was aesthetically lazy and functionally detrimental since the cabbage kept falling out. Rather, finely chopping the cabbage so the strands hold each other up inside the sandwich would be a better choice, as would maybe making a jalapeno-cabbage slaw. Service was excellent, as the staff as well as the owner--who happened to be standing nearby--were kind enough to answer my questions. It's a fun location and a good tenderloin sandwich that has the most important part down (the meat); I just wish something could be done about the bun and the use of cabbage. read more

I wasn't sure if I wanted to give this 3 or 4 stars, but since the food tasted pretty good, I'm rounding up. Basically, this restaurant reminds me of a drive-in restaurant. It's not the same, but each parking space has a menu board and intercom system. Though during the winter months, I chose not to use it and went into the plexiglass enclosed area that is normally open air seating to get to the inside order window. (Note that there are order windows accessible from the outside on the north and south ends too!) The order counter stretches across the interior and the menus are posted overhead behind the counter. My wife decided to go with the Chicago Dog while I ordered the Pulled Pork BBQ topped with cole slaw. After paying, we were given a number for our table and we sat in the enclosed area. After about 8-10 minutes, our plates were brought out to us. (Note that beverages were given at the time we were given the number.) Both the BBQ and hot dog were good, but nothing to rave about. Enjoyable, filling, etc, but no "wow" factor. Just lunch. Both items tended to be a bit messy while eating, so we used plenty of napkins that were dispensed at each table. They do have hand scooped ice cream available, but we passed on this visit. The place is easy to find on the east side of Greenfield and access to the highway is assisted by a light at that intersection. Highly recommend! We randomly picked this place on our way out of town, after a weekend of soccer games. I had the Oklahoma burger and garlic fries. The burger was very tasty and the fries were made with real, fresh garlic! My wife had the grilled cheese and a side salad. Brie and apples in a grilled cheese, YUM! The salad was fresh and delightful. We shared a Sprecher Root Beer off the tap, which was a great treat. The service was great and it was fun to watch a good crew working together in a small kitchen.
