Jim has been my golf coach since I was 9. That was 39 years ago. He taught me as a kid everything I know. I remember being in 5th grade, last day of school and we were headed to the beach to camp for a week. On the way out of town I had a book report due on the Grip by Ben Hogan that I had to drop off at La Purísima. Jim has an unconventional style of teaching. Yes he can teach you the mechanics. That's easy. But where he excels and makes him world class is his ability to coach your mind to get around the golf course and also translates to life. Jim coached me all the way through my college playing days at Utah Valley University and then we took a 20 year break from working together because I stopped playing golf. Playing competitively from 10-23 and especially grinding in college put me into burn out. And I wasn't close to going Pro. So all my time went to my family, Goldman Sachs, furthering my education, and side fun jobs. As my career progressed I became a Financial Advisor and now also with older kids I can now get my game back. Naturally I went back to the GOAT who taught me as a kid. I live in Lake Tahoe now and he's in California. No problem because I have the game. I have the mechanics on how to play. I don't need help there. Where I need help is upstairs. Getting my mind dialed in and working on managing the course. We have been 2 years back at it and I went from a 10 handicap to a 5. I shot 74 today which I will post a pic of. I'm getting my game back and working through my mental game, preparation, dialing in my shots, and really playing respectable golf again. It's been a long time, since my college days, that I played decent golf. So no need to live on the central coast. Jim and I meet weekly on face time. We work through my challenges. He shares wisdom. I cannot say enough about Jim DeLaby, both as a golf coach and a down to earth, decent guy. I came to Jim following a detailed internet search for a good instructor, looking to get back into golf after a significant shoulder problem/surgery left me sidelined for almost 18 months. I'd been a golfer for 35+ years, and I had a plethora of problems that made for a below average game. Jim's instruction made an immediate and significant improvement to my golf game. Jim was an A+ from the first lesson. First off, he asked how I came to him, and he immediately focused on ensuring his training regimen did not risk re-injuring my shoulder. In fact, he gave me a brief exercise regimen which I have adopted as a standard before I even swing a club on the range or during a practice round. Subsequent lessons focused on the same, and he eased me into re-learning and/or improving my short game, my irons and my woods. Night and day improvement, and perhaps more important, I have a sense of confidence on the course. Notably, Jim is just a good guy. He is an excellent communicator, and is able to relate to his students on several levels. He also has a colorful background as a golf pro/instructor, and willingly shares his experiences in a way that the average golfer can relate to. Lastly, Jim will take the time to ensure you get things right. I hired Jim to give a couple of lessons to my daughter and 2 granddaughters (4 and 7) while they were here visiting from Maine. Jim made it so fun! He kept things moving along with lots of games and the utmost in patience! She is definitely excited, as is the 7 year old, and even the 4 year old seems to be hooked on golf! Teachers often give you so much that you feel overwhelmed with information that you somehow become underprepared for the task at hand. You reach the point of saturation and all the crystals descend to the bottom and become a weight and sludge of trivia. Jim wont do this to you. I met Jim when we went to college. We quickly became friends. Just a really nice guy and great sense of humor. He was on the golf team and said he would work with me to improve my game. I went to Jim as a beginner golfer (topping a lot of balls, gripping the way random people on YouTube told me how to grip, very inconsistent striking, etc)... but thanks to Jim, I was able to start launching most of my balls in the air after 1 lesson. I found myself at Trilogy visiting a life-long friend. I was literally coerced into playing golf with her women's group. Needless to say, I panicked. The last time I had played a round of golf was over a decade ago. I had watched Jim give my friend a golf lesson and was SO impressed how he could identify a small adjustment that would result in huge gains. So, I hatched a plan. I would sneak in a clandestine lesson with Jim with the intent of simply being able to connect an 8 iron with a ball. Jim was willing to fit me in early the morning before his first lesson. Wow Jim, every ball straight or a baby fade Wifey was excited only thing that hurt my score of 4 over was my putting. Ball was rolling on line just to soft or too hard. For the first 4 Holes I was Par, then I went. Bogey, Bogey, dbl Bogey, then Par, Par. Besides being my first & probably last personal trainer Golf coach & a great friend for this reason he you go folks , Jim teaches you to be able to identify the positions you need to hit in order to produce the shot you want. Starts with a grip DNA or your (personal) grip print. Then set up position. Take care you might not be lined/squared up to the target as you think. He'll correct it immediately. a little fine tuning/calibration on your grip of your trailing hand depending on if hook or slice. (its in the millimeters!) This golf experience is so much fun! I have been going to see Jim about every 2-3 years for his golf school. I would attend regularly if I lived closer, but the distance also makes for a great golf vacation experience.
