Great course that offers 9 or 18 holes, and a 12 hole challenge course. Beware, the challenge course is quite a literal challenge and there is no one playing it. The fairways and greens are well maintained and play very smooth. They have a well stocked pro shop and a bar and grill for before, during or after your round. Had the opportunity to play Monarch Dunes and the par 3 Challenger course recently for a guys trip. Although it's a bit tucked away from the freeway, our group had a great time and were happy with the accommodations. Both courses were in good shape and the greens were supple and receptive. We were one of the few groups on the course due to the weather. Still the course was fully staffed and welcoming to our party. Amenities from the club barn, café/restaurant, and pro-shop are well kept and customer service was solid. Overall Monarch Dunes was my favorite of the 4 rounds played over the weekend. I'm definitely looking forward to returning in the near future! read more

The course is a terrific layout of different holes revealing water, hazard area, well maintained fairways and manicured greens. The greens are long and undulating. La Purisima was recently aerified so I looked for another option on my drive up from SB to SF. This place was fantastic. The greens are the true gem of the course along with some great views and elevation changes. Not sure there's a tougher grouping of par 5s on their back 9 either. Would definitely recommend this course if you're looking for something in between SB and SF. read more

If you are not a local, don't golf here. The people who work there lack customer service skills from the pro shop to the restaurant to the Marshall. You have to buy alcohol to get ice for the ice chest. There is no friendly greeting when you walk into the pro shop. The Marshall was less than friendly. They charge $25 for a cart. They really need to work on their customer service skill considering how expensive it is to eat, drink and golf there. read more

The course is a general mess. Severely overpriced for the course quality and condition. Areas bordering the fairways are filled with debris, dead leaves, fallen tree limbs, etc. he moguls in the fairways are covered with dead, hay-like grasses or with bald spots rendering them virtually unplayable. read more

What an amazing experience and top-notch organization in our own backyard!! This is the Wednesday program at Monarch Dunes on Wednesdays. What is First Tee?? The First Tee is an international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people. What are the values? Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy, and Judgment. Kids not only learn to respect golf; they learn to respect others, themselves, and authority. My boys take lessons at their program at Monarch Dunes in Nipomo and THEY LOVE IT!!! It is fun, positive, and encouraging. The coaches are fabulous because they are not simply there to teach golf; they are there for the kids to enjoy golf. The First Tee has lots of programs so check their website out for the most convenient program for your child/youth. You can call them up and/or register online. Scholarships are available. TFTCC is one of many chapters of the First Tee non-profit organization in all 50 states and select places around the globe. They have after-school and in-school programs, we help shape the lives of young people from all walks of life and levels of sportsmanship. One of the courses in the area that I can play once and never again. Very nice greens and some holes are well designed. But there are some that have me just shaking my head and wondering what they were thinking. Were some just thought of because that is all they had to work with? But the worst part is there are signs that say that speed of play is regulated by "marshals". I didn't see one the entire time we played. We followed the slowest group of younger girls walking. On some of the holes, 2 of the 3 girls kept landing them in the water and would spend at least 10 minutes digging their balls out. When they finally got on the green, they would take turns putting them put a marker down even though they were less than a foot in front of one of the other girls. While the other girls were done putting waiting for another, they would stand around instead of heading to the next hole. We finally had a enough after getting to hole 18, hitting and then realizing AGAIN the girls were digging another ball out of the water. All within view of the clubhouse. For $146 for a twilight game, I expected not only a better designed course, but also a better experience to keep people moving. Like I said, play it once, say you did it and then move on read more

Overpriced. Gopher city. Price to play here is as if your were playing in the Bay Area or at courses down south. But here? I don't think so. So many spots are just weeds and dirt. If you don't mind spending big bucks on a truly average course by all means play here. If not, check out cypress ridge. Good course for the price. Plus people there are more friendly. read more

Pace of play is good and each hole is lovely. Different from the last and posses a new challenge. Staff and course conditions even in July were great. My father is a member here & I play for FREE. HOW CAN I COMPLAIN. Thanks DAD I live in Sacramento area & visit mom & dad 4-5 times a year and every time I visit WE PLAY. This is a tough course - you do have to play it a couple times to score well OR to even get familiar with the fairways as you score on your second shot.... Greens are true & roll nicely. Restaurant has really good food & drinks....... This course is much better then Hunter Ranch in Paso Robles (in my opinion) The real reason for this review is that I received a discount at the club house buying a brand new 2018 Scotty Cameron Newport putter for $346.41 Including TAX taking advantage of Daddy's club discount. Here's the kicker: 2 weeks later played in tournament in Scottsdale and won longest putt contest receiving a $50.00 bill ..... This is a beautiful and challenging course that is kept in excellent condition. This course is not for the faint of heart.

I played the front nine one day, and the 12 hole par 3 the next. I remember scoffing on the first day, "I don't want the Par 3--I want a 'real course'." But the Par 3 beat me up worse than the main course! The Par 3 is named The Challenge. It is target golf at its finest. Fall off the green, land in the rough, and you're looking at links-style grass past your ankles. Trust the yardages! The greens on The Challenge were AMAZING. So many undulations, challenging pin placement, and beautiful condition. Plus, I played "twilight" for $10! After noon, you can play for $12. I had thought I could bring my kids next time because it's a par three....but the course is far too difficult for mine. If you bring your kids, they should be experienced golfers. The main course was challenging, too: lots of water and deep rough. The greens were less impressive than those of The Challenge, though: they had some blight or cross-pollination/different types of grass. This round, too, though, was a value. Plus, FIVE sets of tees make it interesting and accessible for almost all players. The houses (which some yelpers mention) didn't bother me at all. I didn't see anyone my entire round. I walked because carts were scarce--and it was a tough walk for me (I'm no longer in my 20s.....) They are apparently getting a new fleet of carts. Try The Challenge. Challenging course, highlighted by undulating hills, enough traps to make you curse, yet a natural beauty that makes you want to come back sooner rather than later. $75/person in July for 18-holes and a cart. My amigos had coupons from Costco that made me look like a chump, but the price was worth the round of golf. Fairways and greens are in excellent shape. Employees were friendly and accommodating. Wish I could give zero stars, went with my family to play an evening round and immediately felt like the front desk manager in the pro shop was being rude. After we had paid we waited 10 mins for the cart guy to show up because we had to fill out the cart sign in rather then just work it out and let us go play. After we signed in we left to our car to load the clubs and the "operations manager" came out and said he had to take a picture of my friends ID for some reason. My friends license is confidential due to being a veteran and a police officer so he felt uncomfortable with him taking a picture of it. The "operations manager" told him he was "being sketch" because he didn't want him to take a picture, even though he had offered to let him write his DL # down just not take a picture of his entire ID. He wouldn't budge on letting him take a picture so we asked for a refund and then got told we were trespassing and had to leave immediately. As for the golf course the challenge course and old course are complete garbage, both courses are covered in weeds and dirt making the fairways unplayable. Greens are a 6/10. If you want to have a good time don't come here. Cypress Ridge, Black Lake, and Avila Beach all have a better bang for the buck including a more respectful staff. read more

Probably one of the worst designed courses I have played. I Golf two to four times a week, so I do know golf. the layout, blind shots and hilly fairways make this terrible. If you are out for a good round of golf, or a weekend golfer forget this course. The problems for this course are exasperated by the lack of watering on the roughs adjacent Yo the fairways. The club house is a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The food is fresh and well prepared. On the Central Coast warmer days patio a great place to take in a meal while watching golfers out on the course. For those cooler days one can pull up a chair to one of the fire rings to warm your feet while relaxing with a drink and a few hors d'oeuvres from the Grill. read more

The course is beautiful and fun to play, but the staff and customer service was the worst I've experienced at a course at this price point. The pro shop staff was about as unfriendly as they could get, and we were rushed by the marshal on holes 17 and 18 despite maintaining pace of play and having nobody behind us for multiple holes. What happened to the greens? Okay, I think I complained in my last post few years back. But, they have gone completely opposite direction on this one. The greens are soft, furry and slow with bumpy paths to boot. My ball buried itself on #11 (106 yards par 3). I liked the course when the greens were firm and rolled true. Now, the ball rolls and bounces as if it was skating across a shag carpet. The course condition is still great and the layout is fantastic. Many challenging holes with plenty of water to navigate around (I thought we were in drought?). The bunkers could use some more sand as few of my sand shots touched the hard pan beneath the sand. This course is a great weekend getaway for those of us living in the valley. The weekend green fee is slightly on the high side, but I can tolerate as long as we're not going out there every weekend. Please work on the greens. I want that nastiness back. read more

This is an incredible new golf course on the Central Coast. 5 tee boxes give many different views of the holes, and an opportunity for golfers of all levels to enjoy. This is a links type course but has a few holes with water carry. The greens are fast but roll true. The new "Challenge" course is a 12 hole par 3 course. Yes, I said a 12 hole course! The holes vary from 75 to 225 yards. A true challenge that takes only 2 hours to complete. The french fries at the "Pub" are spectacular and the entire staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Great course with good lies. Punishing the inaccurate player, the holes are well laid out. Greens are BRUTAL. They will give you a complex for when you visit other courses. The 11th hole is a long par 3 that if you are dead into the wind, you might need your driver. Only downfall is that it is the most expensive public course on the central coast. This is problematic in that it isn't THAT nice and is kind of a pain to get to. read more

Ten of us played the course today and to the man we were really disappointed. Greens would not hold shots that hit on the putting surface. Greens were rough and just about every putt started bouncing the moment the ball was struck. It's almost like the course is out of money and they are taking shortcuts to reduce costs. They have no PA system and we were sent to the first tee but two threesomes showed up and claimed they were in front of use after we had already teed off. Course has some real challenging holes so it was every bit it's 128 slope rating from the white tees. read more

Anyone suggesting the course is in a bad location is just being vindictive. It's a beautiful course and a good challenge for golf. The course was well maintained too. The facility allows walkers and riders, so the natural question for me is pace of play. When a golf course charges premium rates, I personally believe pace of play should be enforced. It's a challenge I know, but 5 plus hour rounds is not acceptable. The only time we saw anyone was the beverage cart, which is nice, but never a ranger. When we inquired on the turn, the staff was insistent that there was nothing they could do. I'm a golfer, I work at a course and I know what I'm talking about. Sometimes, people don't know or understand that they're behind. They need a players assistant to keep them on pace, but if no one ever tells them, they can stumble around for 6 hours. Clearly, there were two groups in front of us who decided very early golf was the secondary activity that day. It's not our place to tell them. That's how altercations start. Hopefully, this lack of enforcing the pace of play was an anomaly and not the norm, but YOU need to know. It could be a very long day there. Thanks for listening. read more

Still one of my favorite courses. It is definitely tough but does offer variety. Pace of play was great and the course is in great shape. A little wet when we went making balls just stick to the grass but overall great day. My only complaint was that there appeared to be a group in front of us that walked on at some point. We had no one in front of us and then a group of 3 who were really slowing down play. They spent more than enough time looking for balls, some even in the water. They looked inside the water for a bit trying to find their balls. They left ash from smoking on the greens and even an empty can on a Tee Box and a cup on a fairway. Not sure what procedure is but it was the 18th hole and didn't want to make a big deal out of it. Other than that, another great and pleasant round at monarch. read more
