Our search for a landscaper began as a search for someone to repair a leaking foundation. After three foundation companies said our water intrusion issues were grading related we started our search for a landscaper in Severna Park. I called 6 companies, 3 showed up for the scheduled appointments to price the work and out of those 1 provided us with a proposal. We'd asked for an itemized proposal with a few 'wish list' items and got back a lump sum estimate for the grading portion of the project alone. I called one more company at the recommendation of a neighbor-- Bear Landscaping. It took about a week to get on Russell's busy spring calendar, but he showed up on time, listened to ALL of our concerns (including my constant wants versus needs budgeting assessment) and gave us his recommendations. In addition to the grading he addressed how to make our project last -- namely our super shaded yard with lots of tall (and many dead) trees wouldn't allow for grass to maintain the grading project meaning we'd be in a cycle of re-doing the work. Russell suggested removing the trees (I could only hear cash register sounds in my head as he continued), laying sod and finishing with river rock on the side of our house. Within days I had a quote in my email that had to be wrong: it was nearly half of the quote that I'd expected to receive and considerably more competitive than the one from a big name company (who only priced the grading work which I'd have had to pay for multiple times over because the solution wasn't a long term one). I was floored. We booked all of the services immediately and Russell's team came out for the tree removal about two weeks later and just came back after another week to finish the grading, sod and river rock treatment. Russell's team even hit a snag with their drainage approach when our deck turned out to have another deck built underneath it, but they quickly pivoted to a new solution without hesitation. Also worth noting: both landscaping crews that came to our house were friendly and professional to us and our neighbors. My husband and I could not be happier-- the transformation of our property is unbelievable. We have had neighbors seek us out to compliment the work. We are so grateful for Russell's easygoing, no pressure and honest approach, and that he took the time to truly listen to our concerns and fully explain solutions. We used Fajardo's Landscaping (Jefferson and his father as well as extra workers on one occasion)…read more The first time Jefferson did not follow my spouse's instructions (we noticed he does not take notes when you provide instructions and seems not to remember) and the stone was placed in the wrong area. We gave him a pass, paid for more stone, and tried again. We recently hired him again and when he did not seem to remember what we asked him to do, we sent explicit instructions via text. He was supposed to 1) create a shallow rubber mulch area; 2) top off mulch in other areas; 3) pull weeds in our beds (that was a disaster as the weeds came roaring back in less than a week even though we repeatedly asked they pull them by the roots - that has never happened with any other landscaping company we have hired - and they even just skipped some of the beds); 4) clean the frog pond (another disaster - it has never been left with so much leaves and debris in it with any other landscaper - I have to clean it again myself now); and 5) the worst part is that we purchased a Cherry Tree, gave explicit instructions how to plant it even though we should not have had to because this is a landscaping company (with root top slightly - 1 inch - above ground, with leaf grow and mulch, which we purchased). A week later I noticed the tree was dying, so I notified Jefferson shortly thereafter and asked him if he planted it correctly. His response was a non-response. The dying tree did not make sense - it was beautiful when it was planted - so we dug the tree up ourselves and found the top of the root ball approximately 6 inches below ground. WHY? Fajardo does not know how to properly plant a tree? I notified Jefferson - no response. I notiried him repeatedly and asked for a refund for the tree - nothing else - just the tree. No response. We would never hire Fajardo again. They do blow leaves well. But, we paid them $1500 for labor, purchased all mulch, leaf grow, and the tree ourselves. Also, the shallow bed was also supposed to be devoid of grass and within a week, grass was growing all through it, so I have had to take on that chore of pulling up grass that should have been taken care of my Jefferson. Our observation is that his dad works hard, Jefferson not so much.

All of the existing fencing and hardscape was removed and we installed new cedar fencing, a patio area, a parking area,lighted garden beds and a stone bench. All of this in a narrow DC yard (16x120). We did not contract LBD for design services; we did most of that ourselves (just looking at pictures online). But Gary did a good job of looking at our ideas and helping us see if there were any clear problems. He was always happy to meet with us in person or talk on the phone. And he went with us when we selected hardscaping materials. The only real con to the entire process with LBD is that the job did not go quickly. A job that was scheduled for a few weeks stretched into a few months. There were weather delays for sure and Gary was also working other jobs. However the delays didn't bother us much at all. First, Gary was very clear up front that if we had a strict timeline he wasn't probably our guy. Second, we were more interested in quality than speed. I'm reluctant to write numbers because I have no idea what the scope of your project would be. But I always wish someone would give some indication as to price. So for all the work described above, plus a new garage door (about $5k), but without any actual plantings (we did that part ourselves), the total cost was just over $40k. Yes that's a lot of money, but some of that came from our choices -- the cedar fence was over $10k. And some of the cost was the quality we were paying for. Gary put a lot of work into making sure that the new yard would drain well and making sure that the ground under the hardscaping was well-prepared. That preparation took a lot of work.
