I have gotten multiple enjoyable meals at this Jewel-Osco. I have also gotten some Jazz apples I liked here. I was grateful when I found ziploc bags at this store that I was having trouble finding elsewhere, the quart-sized Ziploc brand slider freezer ziploc bags. I am grateful this store has a bunch of different items that I may desire to have. This Jewel is just a nightmare to go to. They consistently mismark items and then try to charge you more for them. When I called them out on it, the checker just said oh sorry. She even acknowledged that it was mis- marked but they refused to honor the price. Really bad service. read more

NO WAY OUT There's a world of difference between two OPRF-area Jewel Oscos despite being only 2 miles apart. Following a brief stop at the "good" Dollar Tree on Madison St, my girl and I came here to buy barbecue accoutrement on 8/25/18. Right away we noticed a problem: it's inaccessible via eastbound traffic, so you'll have to hook a U-turn. Strike two came when I saw several piles of busted wooden produce pallets chilling outside, giving a "we don't really care" attitude. Normally these would be in the back, out of sight, but apparently this Jewel doesn't have space for a rear dock, so yeah. Nice eyesore. Inexplicably, there's only ONE store entry/exit, meaning you'll encounter a shopping cart logjam moments after stepping inside. The selection of items is fine, but it's definitely smaller than the one on Lake St, plus the alcohol is sequestered in a weird area towards the back. Employees weren't great. Obviously they're not the amazing friendly folks who work at Trader Joe's, but would it kill them to crack a smile? No one bothered to bag our groceries, so we had to do it ourselves (this ain't no damn ALDI!) * TL;DR * They built too large of a grocery store on too small a plot of land. Though most aisles were fairly tidy, everything's crammed in here and makes for a stressful grocery experience. Shopping cart traffic is a hot mess with nowhere near enough space to move. I'm gonna say hard pass. We learned our lesson and have no need to return, especially since the Jewel in River Forest is lightyears better than this disaster. read more

I tolerate Jewel because it is convenient. Today I plugged into the app so that I could get the sale price on the coffee I bought. (The app itself is so inconvenient as to make it not worth my while most of the time.) I did not get the $3 discount so I went to the desk and was told that the discount was only for on line orders. SERIOUSLY!! There is a big sign that says it's on sale in the aisle. Although the clerk was pleasant she was not helpful. I would think there could be something done to get me the discount, but no. Management/Administration: please visit your store! I've been a shopper for 15+ years and the store has actually worsened exponentially over the past few years. Prefer driving 10-15 minutes further to competitor as I know that I'll at least get good customer service and be able to check out in a reasonable amount of time. Every time I go, I'm ticked when I leave. These are the laziest most rude people I've ever seen. I was standing at the service desk for about 10 minutes. At least 4 or 5 employees walked past me without acknowledging me, while 2 others stood at the register having a full conversation. One actually went behind the service desk, punched some buttons then left without saying a word. Finally, after all this time I asked was someone working the service desk. She replies "The service desk doesn't open until 8:00." So the store opens at 6:00AM, but customer service doesn't open until 8:00? Furthermore, nobody had the common courtesy of simply saying this to me and instead pretended I wasn't standing there as if to say "Screw you. You should know what time the desk opens and it's not my problem."? There's also no sign on the counter to tell customers what time the desk opens. I don't go to this location because the service is so bad, and this is the first time I've been there in a couple of years because of the way I was treated the last time. Every other Jewel-Osco that I go to has a service desk that is open when the store opens. I will just leave this message here (and I'm saying this as a black man). You can't get upset when others who don't look like you treat you like crap, if YOU treat others who look like you and everyone else like crap. Get your act together or get a new job. This store honestly stresses me out. I only stop here if I absolutely have to. There is a parking lot and street parking. Every time I go the store is crowded and hard to maneuver around. It's a small location so they don't always have everything I'm looking for. The employees always seem unhappy and so do the customers. The self check out line is always having an issue particularly with the Apple Pay function. They are open late and they do have the basics. If you shop here remember to bring bags because it's hard to get a bag at checkout even if you are paying the associated bag fee. Honestly - I love to grocery shop normally and I particularly love speaking with employees and getting recipes. This is not the place to do that. I was at the Osco drug store on Madison in Oak Park. Il early Saturday afternoon ( January 29 ) to pick up a prescription. The pharmacist knew nothing about my prescriptions and was rude. I transferred my account to another drug store. The there is no excuse for this dangerous incompetence. read more

I go to this shop about three times a week. It is smaller than most suburban grocery stores, but usually has everything I need, and you can get in and out in 20 minutes. Some of the staff is extremely friendly (Latia always greets me by name, and the fish lady is very helpful). But watch out for the cusomer service desk. Often they only have one person there, and invariably the person in line ahead of me is cashing her paycheck, paying her mortgage, financing a loan, etc. Don't we have banks for this? Sheesh. They have four of those self-serve checkouts now, which means that only one or two real-person checkers are on duty most days. I resisted at first, but now I enjoy the control of packing my own bags the way I like them packed. read more

I've lived in Oak Park for a year now but didn't go into this Jewel for the first time until fairly recently. I've complained in the past about the customer service at Pete's, but this place makes Pete's look like it has concierge service. The employees are atrocious. I won't go into a lot of detail, but they're basically rude and lazy, pretend like they don't see/hear you when you approach them with a question, and get defensive when you suggest they do their job and make an effort to help you. One was also on a personal call on her cell phone, which is just unprofessional. I'll never set foot in there again unless the zombie apocalypse has arrived and Pete's is swarmed with throngs of survivors looking for supplies. I only come to this Jewel as a LAST resort. Just needed to pick up few items which are always overpriced. I have the pleasure of being off on most Wednesday's because I work the weekends. Well every retired and very slow grocery store customer is picking up their items along with the unemployed folk browsing the beer section. Staff is rude and don't like working there and I can't blame them. They are non stop all the time. If you can't find parking outside, then you know everyone is already in a good mood. The set up of this store is a joke and makes me feel nervous. Very narrow aisles and produce section is bare bones. I hate that it is one way in and one way out. I feel like a mouse in a playhouse with a $75 bill at the end instead of cheese. This part of OP, people LOVE their meat so if you are vegan, love organics or vegetarian, go to Petes Fresh Market on Lake St instead. Here you will find great fried chicken at the deli and plenty of ribs, bacon, and any cut of meat for your meal. I would NOT recommend shopping here unless you have to. read more

This Jewel is one of the smaller ones, more like a convenience store to me when I don't feel like driving over to the larger one in River Forest. I must say, sometimes the fruit here isn't the freshest but other than that, the food selection is decent. I truly love the staff here, who all are for the most part, very helpful and friendly. This is why I've become a regular at this store. Now that Oak Park has lightened up and allowed the store to sell wine and beer, my bf and I come here a little more often, when in need of drinks for entertaining, celebrating etc. read more

The Current Manager is unqualified, and should be retrained, or work in the stock room and not have any contact with customers. The Service desk girls our rude. The grocery Manager in the fruit area is not qualified, he does not respect customers. Jewel should rehire John the previous Manager he was great. The only redeeming quality about this god-forsaken grocery store is currently and indefinitely inoperable. This Jewel is cramped and sometimes smells of ammonia to the extent that the boyfriend and I were convinced that the queen of all cat ladies must have been following us around. The dairy section literally reeked of cat urine. Really - I blamed it on this woman who was in the aisle with us until about a month later when I was over in produce and that exact same suffocatingly disgusting odor permeated ever sense of my being. No one was around for me to place the blame on this time. The only thing I actually liked about this store was the self checkout aisles, but they're no longer in service. There is no reason I could think of to choose going to here over the Dominick's that is a few blocks north. Both are in short walking distance from my apartment, and only one of them smells like 93 cats relieved themselves at the same time. It's a tough call, but I think I'm going to have to go with the Dominick's. read more

I lived right around the corner from this Jewel for 4 years. When I first moved in, I was happy to have a grocery store around the corner that I could walk to and could grab anything I might have forgotten in a hurry. Well, let's just say shopping here is unpleasant. It is cramped, has poor selections, and the check-out experience is just plain awful. If a self-checkout machine is actually working, you then need to get an employee's attention to actually get bags (which is no easy task). Suffice to say, I can count on one hand the number of times I came back here and every time reinforced why I avoid going here. read more

It's already bad enough that we purchase an item that had an expired date from December but to show no remorse and blame us for buying an item and unintentionally, feeding to our 1 year old baby is unbelievable. Closest jewel to my place but will avoid at all cost. Extremely crowded and tiny aisles. More than half of the food is expired just still being sold, the produce is also of poor quality. I asked a deli team member to please get me the three largest chicken tenders she could, she looked me straight in the eye and said OK in a totally not present way and then proceeded to start by grabbing the smallest and most dessicated one. CHAOS! Unpleasant and poorly managed. Watch your cart and your bill. Out of cilantro. Out of all staples and specials on chicken breasts. Mis-priced items. Internet advertised specials not honored. Technology fails - don't take your eye off the scanners, shoppers. It is one of the most congested markets in the city. The aisles can only take one cart at a time so it becomes a challenge of stares - who will back out first. And workers - I totally respect you - but standing around complaining about the situation - that's not gonna make anybody's life better. I agree, the aisles are narrow, but I have a "Wide Load" tag on the back of my cycle. I actually find it a great opportunity to be civil and exchange a smile with another shopper who is trying to navigate in the other direction. Admittedly, the store is smaller than most, and there are some things that aren't available- not that any of them were essential to life. However, the real jewel (pun intended) of this place is the pharmacy, I'd give them 10 stars if it was stand-alone. Every member of the regular pharmacy staff is professional, personable and positive. They would be so individually, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts following the example of the manager. It's clearly the best pharmacy I've ever found, and I've got the AARP card to prove that I've had the chance to visit a few others. In short, come for the pharmacy, pick up other stuff- if you don't mind interacting with others in the aisles as you peruse the "meager" selection of only 30 different pasta sauces- instead of the usual 70. read more
