Tonys hot bar is amazing. They have a broad selection and in many ways its the go to grocery in the area. Sadly however navigating the store is a nightmare, and thats by design. Have you ever bought eggs in an interior aisle? Frozen breakfast items outer wall past dairy. Why? To make you double back. Bottled water and soda on one aisle but peligrino in a different section? Double back... Theres oj (interior aisle next to eggs which is like a traffic jam again by design) but in another area is their own fresh squeezed oj. They have great mango salsa but its not in stock today sorry. So yeah the crowd is playing asteroids in the aisle and its always crowded. If they emulated every other grocery store on earth in arranging their things this rating would go up.

I decided to go with my Nona for her weekly grocery shopping when I was visiting Illinois for a trip. Maybe I'm easily impressed but I thought this was a top notch grocery store! Located in riverside by the mall, I felt like this place had everything! The staff was very friendly offering a cart or if they could point you in the right direction of something. Such a huge selection of everything you could Possibly want. The produce, deli, bakery, fish market and everything in between left nothing to be desired! I don't see how you could necessarily leave missing anything at this place Not just food, but a lot of other basic necessities can be purchased at Tony's as well I had to remind myself that I had a long car ride after my trip and wasn't grocery shopping myself. If I'm ever in the area again I'll be back I'm sure.

If you need variety's of fruits and vegetable you can get them at best price and most importantly FRESH at Tony's Fresh Market. I love this location. Clean store, solid international selections. Produce in good condition. Checkout lines I felt were a little long and moving slow. However a new line opened. Would have been nice to hand pull the next person in line instead of a free for all with everyone charging all at once. And I prefer store opening time before it gets busy in the afternoon/evening.

While parking can be questionable at some locations the regular and handicap parking here seems plentiful within the the square and the entire area has both a true small town feel and also a big local park feel with trees and flowers. For an afternoon Farmers Market there was a full supply of vendors during each of my visits. Many have mentioned the knife sharpening and after I had a pair of scissors sharpened I'm also a believer. With many vendors offering multiple types of veggies and plants there is a lot to look at. While I didn't buy raw honey (not super processed or pasteurized so most people say it has better health benefits and and fuller flavor) here at Riverside yet, I expect to need some at the start of the next season. There are multiple Amish vendors and I was lucky to spend a while talking to one of the Amish families about their farm and some of their core values. I've worked directly with a few different Amish families in Illinois and Indiana and have found each to be an unique experience. If you have time to talk to some of them or buy your veggies or baked goods from them you'll love the experience. Some people I've spoken to treat a Farmers Market like a bartering flea market but I find the quality to be high and prices reasonable and don't think that it's appropriate to ask a farmer or baker to lower their price when they have put some high labor in to their products. Hard work should be rewarded.

This is the perfect size for making mohinga (Burmese catfish soup). They also have a fish service counter if you need them to cut it into smaller pieces. They have nice big sturdy plastic bags that can fit the whole fish. They have separate service counters for chicken, fish, and beef/pork which is helpful to reduce cross contamination. It's super cold so make sure you bring a down jacket and beanie! The service line sometimes takes a bit of time so just be aware of that. There are plenty of other meat offerings like whole chicken, pork, sausage, beef, etc. All of them look really fresh and very competitive pricing. There's also a grocery store section where you can buy fresh vegetables, spices, and even baked goods like paczkis. The Bavarian cream paczki was delicious and not too sweet. There's also bulk frozen foods like fries and jalapeno poppers (if I remember correctly). Finding a whole catfish in Chicago can be difficult and I'm glad I can always trust Peoria packing for my catfish needs. The whole 2 lb catfish was only $6, incredible deal! The parking lot is decently sized, on a busy day like Christmas or Thanksgiving you can drive further near where the trucks are parked and park along the fence. For special holiday hours they were responsive both through Instagram DM and phone calls to confirm their hours! Really great service. They recently moved to this new location in October 2025. It used to be near Fulton Market in West Loop. Different location but same great service and item selection, probably more spacious too.

So be advised that this is a little out of the way, but really just a little or you can take the "L" and get off at Central Park. If you make your way to Riot Fest, you can find this easy peasy. The payoff, you get to support a jobs and teaching program. It's a partnership between Lawndale Christian Health and the Chicago Botanic Garden's Windy City Harvest. What else do you get, a bevy of freshly grown (most there) vegetables, tomatoes, lettuces, kale, radishes, peppers, beets on and on. If it's not grown on site they tell you where it came from. They had some pineapple and grapefruit, we know those weren't grown here. Pricing is very reasonable, better than you find at some of the neighborhood farmers markets. I bought a healthy bag of stuff for 16 bucks, and that includes one of their reusable tote bags for 2 bucks. Luckily, it was open until 6:00 PM the Saturday of my visit or I would have prolonged it until who knows when. Farm on Ogden stopped me while enroute to a restaurant the evening of my visit; offering me a much healthier choice to eat in comparison. I visited with an interest of purchasing a salad similar to one I had purchased days ago at Green Tomato Cafe, a cafe attached to Lawndale Christian Health Center. But more importantly I wanted to see what produce items were available for purchase. My introduction to Farm on Ogden was at the 2018 Lawndale 5k where it was mentioned that the proceeds from the race support the farm, which at the time I had no idea of. In time I learned about it after visits to Lawndale Christian Health Center - Fitness Center & Green Tomato Cafe. This visit felt like an adventure because rarely do I encounter or let alone visit an indoor farm. Highly intrigued by the presence of its greenhouse and aquaponics system which I will have to sign up for a tour in the future to learn about. As much as I wanted to ask questions about it at the time of my visit, the time was limited and I was quite positive that I would learn about it in the future eventually. Anything that contributes to the growth of a community by offering healthier foods, jobs, and education I am all for. And Farm on Ogden does so with its partnership with Lawndale Christian Health Center and Chicago Botanic Garden - Windy City Harvest. There are opportunities for anyone including veterans and adults with criminal backgrounds. If you drive, there are no worries about parking because it has its own private lot with street parking available as well. And if you do not drive, yet familiar with Chicago Transit Authority the farm sits right outside of CTA Central Park - Pink line making it an easy commute to-and-from. I made it no secret to one of the employees that I would be returning in the near future after what I discovered. Even though I live outside of the Lawndale community, it is heartwarming knowing that my contributions to not only Farm on Ogden, but Lawndale Christian Health Center are meaningful. ~Blessings~ Thomas G
