It's seen better and cleaner days for sure - But offers big bargains and many items all under the same roof. Laundry hampers, Blankets even. 88cents per lb for chicken quarters, 1.49lb for drumsticks. 2/$3 on Extra Large Eggs. That's a deal. Many items from various places around the world. Mediterranean, Polish, European, Mexico, Peru, Columbia. Prayer candles, piñatas. I don't recommend the bakery, as items were not fresh and did not taste good. I'd skip that. They were professional and spoke English for check out. Nice Michigan apples outside . A very large selection of fruits and vegetables. Was hit or miss on many fruit items. Good bargain shop, not the cleanest or most organized, but good items available. read more

Still love this store, madly. I know we are experiencing supply shortages and things are really messed up in retail right now. But how is it that this little independent grocery store can offer a beautiful bag of limes for under $3 When Mariano's was offering hideous limes for 79 cents a piece? This place still has amazing produce, friendly employees and easy parking. Every employee I encountered today was pleasant and friendly. Nothing like the angry union employees at Mariano's who scowl when you ask where the avocados are. We always like to get our meats here for grilling. The butchers are excellent and know their stuff! Have been shopping at Berwyn Fruit Market for over 10 years, the store is 5 miles away from me, BUT NOT GOING NO MORE! Bought tostadas that were expired they had a date of more than 30 days old, and the cashier forgot to give me my 2 banana peppers. Went back to return my EXPIRED tostadas and to get my 2 banana peppers. Manager Fernando had an employee view the security cameras to investigate regarding the cashier gave me .52 cents banana peppers which literally took them about 20 minutes to review, then Manager Fernando claimed they were given to me......I did not want to argue with him so I left the store upset, realizing I just spent more money in gas and my time going back and fourth to the store WHEN IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE IN THE FIRST PLACE! I dont expect food for free, BUT DON'T TREAT YOUR HONEST CUSTOMER LIKE CRIMINALS FOR .52 CENTS if I could, I would give them zero reviews for this not to happen to anyone else. Stopped in for deli ham while we were in town. We requested 1# packages of ham from the deli. Several were much heavier than we asked for. We were disappointed in the lack of cleanliness seen in the store. Paper was scattered on the floors, and items were stacked haphazardly. There used to be a lot more choices available in the food items. Several shelf stable items were expired. I'll skip this business next time I am in town. read more

Worse arrachera I've ever bought, I told the butcher "cleaned open and tenderized" he shredded my pieces of meat and left all of the fat on the ones he didnt, if i wanted this low quality meat i would have just asked for taco meat. Completely disappointed at this, beware, I know i wont be shopping for meat at Berwyn Fruit Market any time soon. At nearly $6 a pound I believe i was ripped off. Of the five pounds I paid for I probably had (after I cleaned the meat including the shredded ones) maybe 3 pounds. You should be ashamed to let this butcher do this! read more

Cashiers are very quick in ringing you out. However, Make sure you WATCH what they are charging you for or they will OVERCHARGE you. I was buying peaches for 88 cents a pound and was being charged 99 cents per pound for nectarines. I cordially corrected pointed out the cashiers mistake (who by the way was training someone). She deleted the item and looked up code. She didn't find it and asked another cashier for the code. Once again she put in the wrong code and was going to overcharge me. I pointed it out and she got an attitude and told me to show her where it said the peaches were 88 cents a pound as she stormed off the register to the fruit section. (Granted 10 cents is not much but it adds up when you buy more than a pound of peaches). I followed her and pointed out the peaches and the sign that read 88 cents a pound. I asked for an apology and she turned rudely and said I had an attitude and began to speak to the worker who was stocking the peaches. I told her I would not be spoken to in such a manner and requested to speak to a manager. She was RAF. Told me he was over there and continued to insult me. I walked away from her. Fast forward I waited to speak to the manager and when I spoke with the "manager" I informed him of the situation and explained that I was not trying to get her fired but was concerned about her maltreatment and the example she was giving her trainee. The manager explained she has many problems at home. !!! I explained we all carry baggage but that doesn't give us the right to treat people with disrespect. I told him I would not be taking the groceries he offered for me to take the groceries and pay later. Did I appear to be a charity case??? (I was insulted again) I explained to him that not only would I not be taking the groceries but I would not step foot in the store ever again. He explained Berwyn Fruit tries to keep their prices low on meat and fruits for the community. I explained so does Pete's Market and Tony's and their customer service isn't compromised and therefore I had a choice on where I would shop. Keep an eye out on what they are charging you!! In the beginning, when I moved in the U.S I had to try lots of different stores. I was not satisfied with the quality of the food until I came across with Berwyn Food Market. First, I really recommend giving a try to their deli. If you go there the first thing you will notice is how clean their deli is. For meat lovers, their meat is very tasty and fresh. They will cut it for you as you prefer. I really love their steak. For the veggies, you will find a variety of vegetable that you can smell and taste the freshness. Also, in the store, you can find almost everything, without having the necessity ongoing in different stores and wasting your time. Second, I really do like to save and I always check on the difference in prices between the stores. Here you will find very competitive prices. That's what I love about the store, I can save and purchase the best quality for my food. Finally, the customer service is very good and efficient. People who work here are very polite and they will try to help you as much as they can to make your shopping easier and faster. After the quality of Jewel's produce started to go down and after they stopped carrying things like habenero chili's and serano chili's both of which are a staple ingredient in my chili I came across Berwyn Fruit Market. Their fruits and vegetables are very fresh and they have a BUTCHER in the back that will cut your meat the way you want. When I was a little girl, I would go to the butcher with my aunt and I'm telling you this butcher is old skool. I have had several very bad and expensive experiences with Jewel with respect to their meat and produce and also with them not carrying certain merchandise anymore, specifically habenero and serano chili's. Berwyn Fruit Market does and I'm a happy camper Their prices are amazing and the store is, in my opinion, neat and clean. I don't shop for packaged goods or dairy so I can't attest to those products, but I can tell you that their meat and produce is AMAZING. For the dog lovers out there, if your dog loves chicken feet, this particular market does carry them if you want to make them yourself. You can't get any fresher than that. There is also a Deli where the prices for lunch meat are almost $2.00 less then Jewel and WalMart. and that is going to be my next purchase. My inlaws and husband love when I make submarine sandwiches and I can honestly say that sometimes it is cheaper if we go out and buy them....well not any more if I buy my lunchmeat at Berwyn Fruit Mart. read more

Marcela M. I went today to Berwyn Fruit Market to purchase my 5 gallon water bottles, which I do once a week. This is the second time that they refuse to accept a return of one of their defective products. The water bottle top said Hinkley water, but not the jug so they refuse to take it, even though they all know me and they notice it when I bought it. What upsets me is that all the employees know, but they are so afraid to say something. The first time, I needed to argue with the owner because my carnitas smelled spoiled, and he claimed it was my imagination. All the employees knew they smell bad, but were just looking at each other. After a long argument, the owner game me a credit, but never my money. I used to just go for the water, but their customer service is horrible. We just moved to Lyons and our neighbors had suggested this grocery store for us! Store has literally everything and prices are just SO GOOD! Meat is fresh, great assortment of groceries and we got recommendations for the imported cheese from storm's owner (or manager) Jimmy! We just tasted it and it is absolutely amazing! I have been shopping elsewhere from my last review. Last night, on our way home, I asked husband to stop by Berwyn Fruit Market so I could pick up some fish for dinner. That was a bad idea. I come up to the fish/meat counter and see that they have a total of 3 types of fish. 3!!! One of which was sold in individually wrapped frozen patties. Of course, that was the fish I needed. I bought two and hoped that it would turn out well. While at the register I noticed that the package said "product of China" and "Farm raised". Great! I really want my fish coming form China. Again, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Came home, prepared the fish, and baked it for about 20 minutes (more than enough). I tried the fish and it was disgusting! I threw it out immediately. Honestly, I just keep getting more and more disappointed by the store. read more

They took away the fresh donut/pastry racks!!!! :( There are only packaged baked goods, including stale, glazed donuts. Boooooo. I'm very, very sad. Recent improvements in local competition make this grocery store less attractive than it once was. So I'm updating my review. PROS: Competitive pricing for meat and produce, and very cheap prices for bulk goods, such as beans. If you are cooking for a family of 12, this is the store for you. Small but very broad selection of international foods from around the world, reflecting the area's multi-ethnic population. Always easy parking. CONS: The produce here is not very good quality. It's not spoiled, but does appear to be very cheaply sourced. With newer stores in the area and a drop in pricing for fruits and vegetables around the Chicago area, you may want to go elsewhere. The meat prices are good, but as with the produce appears to be cheaply sourced. And i would not trust the seafood counter. If you are in the area and looking for fruit and vegetables (or dry beans) this is still a good store to visit -- especially if the Jewell is your alternative. But if you live close to Tony's, Costco, or even Meijer, those stores may be a better option for you. read more

If you're looking for exotic fruits, vegetables or canned items you're likely to find it here with great prices to boot! This store has an awesome selection of fruits and vegetables and bulk items. Like those seasonings in inexpensively packages in bags, so that an ounce of sage doesn't cost you $5, more like $1.50. And lots of nuts and candies, dates and seeds. The deli offers authentic Mexican salsas, green, red, pica de gallo, guacamole and hot meat items; lechon, carne asada, chicken. Delicious, stuff. You can also buy prepared taco and fajita meat with green peppers and onions. Go down the canned and bottled vegetable aisle and you'll find things you've never seen in English, Spanish and languages you don't understand but you can tell what's inside by the pictures. I needed veggies and some fruit so I hit the fruit market I got lucky and also got a beef roast and all the trimmings to go with it, and I got out for under $20 can't beat that, yeah some stuff is less expensive than other places and you have to know how to shop around for the good deals I use about 4 or 5 different places for groceries and this place has never let me down on veggies and fruit, the meats are a little different that what I like most are cut too thin for my taste read more

I was not happy with the tall young butcher that pushed me aside so he could help a young female customer. He was very rude and I did not appreciate being put on the side so he could hit on the younger customers!!!! The owner needs to create a number system so his employees can serve the customers as should be done since it is supposed to be first come first serve service. Now it is a full service grocery store and after reading the reviews I would not think to buy my dry goods or dairy here, but the produce and meats are a great bargain. I still love this place. The fruits and veggies are great, as is the lunchmeat and meat. However, be very careful of the frozen foods. Checked out the cheese pies today (tiropita) and some of the dates on the boxes were Nov 2011 (and it's Sept 2012 now) which means they are nearly a year out of date. Watch the canned goods too. Just came across some that were about 18 months out of date...and guess what? They were on sale! So, while you can find many great bargains here, be a mindful and careful shopper. read more

I will NEVER come here again. I ran in this place for the first time to pick up some water bottles and soda for new years (trying to avoid the madness of the Jewel parking lot) Where do i even start. Ok the employees attitudes kinda stink i basically chased this kid who worked there down after spending 15 mins trying to find where this place keeps their water bottles. Oh by the Beer and wine?? ok good place for it...... But the kid totally ignored me for a good 3 mins. So i get my soda and water bottles the cashier was less than happy about being there. As i struggle to get out the door with my many beverages all of the employees just stared instead of helping. I dont know maybe they just wernt born with manners or something. Now here is the best part. I get home and notice this nasty smell coming from the water bottles as im unpacking them. I open one up to investigate and the lid of ALL OF THE WATER BOTTLES smelled like straight ROTTEN SEWAGE. GROSS! where were these things stored?!?! I feel like they were moping the nasty floors and stacked the water bottle cases on top of one another while the bottoms were still wet going on the lids of the other cases. I dont know either way GROSS. i had to throw all the water bottles away along with the $5 i paid for them. Went there all the way from LaGrange. I like their products, unfortunately there were shopping carts all over the parking lot. I brought one in and informed management about the risk of one rolling onto Harlem. To my disappointment one had struck my vehicle. Love this place! Fresh veggies, fruit and meat! The deli is great as well. I ended up putting WAY too much in my cart, I thought for sure my bill was going to be at least $150 (it would have been at Jewl) but it was only $55!!! I was shocked! I had to ask to make sure she rang everything up. I got so much for my money! I cooked everything, made salads with the veggies, fruit, etc and everything tasted great! no complaints.
