Stopped in for some old school candy for our 40th class reunion. Everyone was so Nice and welcoming. I did purchase a few charms suckers but needed more. They had some brought over from their other store and had me return the next day for them. I noticed some of the suckers I took home were quite sticky and well, not edible. The clerk assisted me in going through them all and making sure all 30 were ok. I ended up not being charged for the remainder. ( The issue was with delivery ) This place had ALL of the classic candies that we needed And I got some delicious chocolate covered pecans for myself (yum). Thank you! read more

Was looking for something specific Googled candy cigarettes (a prop for a party) and found this spot. Was greeted by a friendly young man who offered a sample of their yummy ice-cream, very good in such a hot day! Got a little more than the gum cigarettes (much better than the candy ones imo) and of course a scoop of ice cream. If I am ever in that area, will definitely stop again! read more

Came here on Friday only to learn that I didn't have my wallet and only a bunch of coins covered in coagulated soda. You ever just need chocolate? If so, you'll understand why I asked the cashier if I could use their bathroom to clean the slime off my change. A woman in back (the owner?) overheard and said, "Cup holder change? Give it here." I showed her how gross it was and insisted I would wash it, but she wasn't having it and made my $3.19 all sparkly again. On top of this, doofus here chose a $2.99 chocolate covered cheesecake slice that came to $3.46 with tax (did NOT mean to do that) which they gave me of course. It was a small act, but the whole experience kind of restored my faith in humanity. read more

Have been going to this place for over 20 years. Just starting using the store in Indian hill, same great service as the Berwyn store just smaller but still great chocolate. read more

THIS is the place to go for not only childhood memories and the best candy but also to meet some of the nicest people in the world. Paula, Lynn, Sandra and Donna make you feel like you are part of their family. The minute you walk in, you are greeted by any one of them and are transported back to a time when you could get candy for a penny or walk around with waxed lips. A time of candy cigarettes and flying saucers made out of wafers. Where you could drink a sugar liquid out of a wax bottle or eat an ice cream cone made with marshmallow. So many memories to choose from. Being a vegan, HOWEVER, most of those tasty memories are no longer available to me. BUT (and this is the best part!) the wonderful people at Old Fashioned Candies can make their homemade chocolates VEGAN for you! From Rocky Road to bananas, pineapples, peaches, oranges, strawberries and ORANGE PEELS, they will dip all of these items in vegan chocolate. If you never experienced nirvana before, wait until you taste these delicious chocolate treats! I highly recommend this place for young and old alike. The people who work there and the candy will make you feel like a kid again! read more

This is THE place to get chocolate covered strawberries! The chocolate and the strawberries always are delicious. The ripeness and flavor of the strawberries always outstanding! I've been coming to Old Fashioned Candies since I was a little girl. It's never wavered on quality or friendliness of the incredibly hardworking owners. They're just fantastic all around! read more

Often I come here to pick up some chocolate covered strawberries and also dark chocolate treats. They do not have parking but there is street parking right in front and it is free. They offer their own chocolate as well as others. You can order ahead for special occasions or just pickup at any time like I do, some treats. The girl at the register was not too friendly but the lady that has been there for some time she is. I really like their chocolate and I will keep coming back. One time I brought some bananas and they covered them for me so feel free to ask if they can do it and they probably will. I've tried different things and I've enjoyed all. read more

Terrific hand-dipped chocolates! You can buy by the piece so you can create your own mix.* They have hundreds of antique chocolate molds they use - holidays are amazing with a huge selection at Christmas & Easter. Dozens of hobby and occupation-themed items make wonderful gifts. You can have items personalized, too! *Hint: They sell small bags of "seconds", chocolates that don't look perfect at a markdown. They taste PERFECT . (don't ask me how I know...) read more

For someone that loves chocolate this place is almost heaven. Their chocolate creams are outstanding- both milk and dark chocolate. Their prices are reasonable, especially comparing them to the National brand names. The women that work there took the time to show me how to "read" the swirls on the creams so you don't have to stick your finger into the candy to insure that you pick what you want. I am now a "regular" and purchase a pound box for myself every couple of weeks. read more

Bleh. When I went in I was the only customer. I was approached immediately and asked what I wanted. I was looking around to see what they had. I got the impression that I was bothering him. That he was mad I did not know what I wanted. Just my impression. They did have much homemade? chocolate. I was looking for the old times candy. They did have a nice amount of that. All business and talking out in the open. I almost feel it would have been nicer if they had a back room. What does that have to do with the chocolate? I don't know. If yo are in the area I might go. Being farther away... nah. read more

This place is pretty cool. My coworkers and I ate at a taco place next door and thought, "Hey, let's pop in the candy store and see what it is all about." They had a really huge variety of not only fun nostalgic stuff (reminded me of my childhood and sneaking candy into the movies), but fancier individual chocolate pieces as well. I'm a sucker for Jordan Almonds, so I got some of those. I also hadn't had candy corn in many years so I figured "it's almost Halloween" and got a little bit of those too. Each person in my group walked out with something! It was just really fun to be a kid for 10 minutes and relive all of your candy fantasies! read more

Ok I'm convinced, this is my new sweet spot!! I'm new to the area and found myself looking for a great place to pickup some fresh tasty sweets. After searching a bit, I decided stop into the Old Fashioned Candies store and I'm glad I did! I was looking for a Carmel apple, but a good ones. Not only did I find the Carmel apple, I also had a chance to pickup a couple pieces turtle inspired chocolates. The customer service was welcoming and inviting!! Needless to say I wanted my family to enjoy the delicious Carmel apples before the seasons end, so I placed my order. They enjoyed every bite!!! read more

I LOVE Old Fashioned Candies!!! My ex-wife introduced me to Old Fashioned when we were dating (as she did so many other Berwyn / Cicero classics). It's the epitome of the corner candy store of years (decades) past. All the chocolates they offer are handmade in an "Old Fashioned" way, sometimes utilizing candy molds that are 50+ years old. Their chocolate isn't "fancy" along Godiva lines, but is simple, perfect, milk and dark chocolate. A GREAT bargain, if you ask for it (and there are a lot of things that you can ask for that aren't on the "menu") is the white chocolate "bark". A HUGE bargain, and if you like white chocolate, this is top-notch stuff. Also go for the milk chocolate covered strawberries, their signature item. When they're in season during spring and summer, they are absolutely amazing. Can't be beat. Seriously. Also during summer, go for a monstrous helping of cotton candy for $1 - that's right - ONE dollar. And they make it right in front of you in an old fashioned (sorry for the redundancy) cotton candy making machine. Just like at carnivals when you were a kid. Check out the wall of chocolate behind the main counter - solid chocolate greeting cards, letters, numbers, locomotives, cars - you name it, they can make it in chocolate - just ask! read more

Been coming here since I was a kid... I'd visit the bike shop next door then come here for a big bag of cotton candy which they made right in front of you.. I was so amazed by that for some reason, I also remember buying some big chew gum before my little league games to pretend I had tobacco in my mouth like the major league players back then.. Anyways..you come here for the chocolate covered strawberrys which are really fresh and tasty.. If you call a day before you can order them with white chocolate as well...On a special occasion for a loved one, you bet your arse I'm ordering strawberries from OFC... They have a huge variety of candies.. From homemade candies to candies you used to buy when you were a kid.. I think I might visit them today for some red fish, violet mints and gummie bears.... Again don't come here without trying the Strawberries... read more

My family has always been familiar with Old Fashioned candies. So when I wanted a sweets table I didn't hesitate to contact them. Even though they are working out of the Indian Head Store Lynn and Rosie have been nothing but patient and accommodating with my mom and I. Thank you so much Lynn and Rosie for all of your help and you will be hearing from us again soon. read more

This place is as consistent as they come and the candy tastes equally awesome every time, in Chicago or across the country. As in my previous review, I wrote that my husband thought this place has the best peanut brittle he's ever had in his life and it's his favorite type of candy. This past Christmas I surprised him with 5 lbs of it and had the shop ship it here to Washington. It was one of his happiest presents. He ate it all in 5 days. Before New Years. ...And all he wanted for his birthday a month later was more OFC peanut brittle. My dad who lived not too far visited the store and bought a few bags to send to him as a birthday present. He was so happy and this time he preserved the brittle as long as possible. It's probably a good thing OFC is far far away from us, for his sake. :) Suggestion to all: If you like Peanut Brittle, go here and grab some. You guys make great candy. Thank you for the wonderful moments you all help create. read more

The one-star review is based on customer service. We just moved to the area and saw this store on Cermak. I love supporting small businesses and buying good quality products, so it seemed like a great local find. The chocolate is fine. There was a chocolate covered cookie that was labeled as much, but ended up being a dipped Ritz cracker. The samples tasted ok. I needed three small gift boxes for a family event. I asked how much, and the worker said the smallest sets were 4 and 6-piece boxes that were sold by the pound. I ended up choosing five pieces per box that were $18.95 a pound because that's what fit. The boxes ended being between $3.40-3.60. The manager, who had been standing there the whole time, walked over and mumbled something. The worker then said, I have to charger you fifty cents for each box. And I said, why? She didn't know, but that's what the manager said. This lady decided to charge me once she saw what the candy weighed. And when I asked her why she didn't say anything before, she said they were $3.95. I told her that she needed to charge everyone the same thing, and that it would be the last time I shopped there. She said nothing. It's a shame. I don't appreciate being nickeled and dimed for arbitrary reasons. I also think having a repeat customer is better than the $1.50, especially at a time when small businesses are struggling. But she knows that. In any event, there are other candy stores in Oak Park and Forest Park. read more

Finally was near this location, so had to make the stop. This place had been on my bookmark list for quite some time. Upon entering....wow. All types of candy. Huge selection of made in-house and also a huge selection of old time candy from my youth that I did not think still existed. Now, I admit that I have a sweet tooth so this type of place can be dangerous to me since I want at least one of everything. However, showing some restraint, I kept it to a variety of a pound of in-house made chocolates. I can't tell you all the different ones that I picked but I can tell you that it was all delicious. I had different types of cream filled chocolates and they were the creamiest that I ever had. Vanilla, Butter, Lemon flavors were standouts. I also thought that the coconut haystacks were awesome. I'm going back for sure. Just typing this makes me want to go now. If you are in the area or even somewhat close you need to make a stop and check it out for yourself. Cheers to all read more
