When coming to Maui to finalize our wedding venue search, I decided that doing our engagment photos there would be best to test out someone for Hair & Makeup. I did my research, and thought that Jessica's pricing was very reasonable, and that her work resembled what I was looking for. With less than a week heads up, she was able to coordinate a time for my hair and makeup, and was so accommodating! I was very happy with the results after she was complete, but the real test came for the actual engagement shoot where we were on the beach getting splashed with ocean water, and battling wind. I have VERY fine blonde hair, and every piece stayed in place (and it was down in loose curls!), and my makeup look like it had just been put on despite hours in humid/wet conditions --- I was floored! Obviously with such a great experience, I booked her and her team for our wedding date once we settled on a venue. The results on our wedding day were nothing short of what I expected. She guided me through the process of how to do multiple (1 bride, 5 bridesmaids, 2 moms, and a groom's service) people's hair/makeup within tight timeframe, and even was able to take on an extra person for hair, and a groomsmen for a touchup last minute! My five bridesmaids are seasoned bridesmaids, in weddings spanning from Napa, to Palm Springs, to Italy and beyond and they all unanimously agreed that was HANDS DOWN the best hair/makeup experience they have ever had. The airbrush make up worked in humid Maui conditions all day, and with a variety of hair lengths/texture everyone was pleased with the results. Not only did I look and feel beautiful, but Jessica was very sweet and helpful as I was not feeling well that day and the A/C broke in my hotel room. It speaks to her expertise that she could put on my eyelashes all while the hotel staff climbed ladders to fix the A/C, room service fluffed the pillows and bedding, dropped off a celebratory bottle and chocolates. I needed help deciding between "glam me up "and "keep it fresh", so I requested she share or link me to photos of engagement shoot that they had done. I was only able to find highly stylized editorial shoots and bridal shoot photos on the website and Instagram. In the end, I decided to proceed with booking anyway, but Zoe left me a message saying that she is refusing to let me book with them because we are not a great match. I am in disbelief. How can she determine that? Because I asked to see some examples of engagement photos? I wonder if it's because my name suggests that I am clearly not white? If not, then it's simply the worst customer service experience I have had. Where to begin . . . It goes without saying, the most challenging part of a destination wedding is finding vendors who are a good fit. I had a make-up/hair trial run with another person on Thursday before my Sunday wedding. Shall we say, I was super disappointed with the results. This isn't a review about the other vendor, so I'll stop there. Cut to Thursday afternoon, picture me, Yelping the island of Maui for alternate options, making phone calls from the car in between airport pick-up runs. The island spirits must have been on my side, because somehow I got in touch with Jessica who was super responsive, calming, took charge, and hooked me up with two amazing people. Both Eboni and Leah were amazing. And yes, even after my questionable trial with the first person, I felt confident that I didn't need a trial with Jessica's crew (that, and I didn't really have time for one). My makeup was perfect, exactly what I wanted -- natural, enhanced, a prettier me. Hair was soft (not sprayed into a hard shell) and pretty. Both withstood 12 hours of heat, humidity, wind, dancing (and who am I kidding, lots of sweat). Jessica is an amazing person. I did not have my makeup done by her, I was the photographer for a wedding and she provided makeup for the bride. During her makeup session she was very warm & outgoing. The thing that blew me away was her generosity. The shuttle driver did not want to stop and take photos on the way to the ceremony location. He burned the very top of his forehead two days before because he didn't go all the way up to his hairline with sunscreen.
