There were times when I worried about it survival. Because being a cowboy hasn't always been popular. And that's what the general store specializes in. Cowboy gear for women, men and children.. Well, like a popularity certainly not the case anymore at the general store. They have incredible merchandise for both men and women and a few for kids. Their selection makes western wear look cool and stylish. There were definitely items in there I wanted to buy. They had some gorgeous clothes for women. Styles to put wranglers as a shame. These clothes are authentic and yet made of great quality fabrics and materials. I don't think I've ever seen a greater selection of cowboy boots for women and kids. The price goes from about $2000 all the way down to $200. So there's something for everyone. The clothing line for women is very western as you would expect. But the quality is absolutely amazing. Service is really funny. The people waiting on you are definitely a throwback from a different era. They most certainly aren't used to servicing women like me, but they did so graciously with a smile. It's kind of like having your grumpy old grandpa waiting on you, but you know he adores you no matter what. When I left, they were all smiling, and it was clear that they were proud to work there. I love the decor, the store and the vintage posters. It's like stepping back in time. Please go visit the general store and all the other merchants along that block. There are some Van Nuys, greatest craftsman and merchandisers and they need to be frequented and honored.

If you have a moment, go by to her little shop on Cahuenga -- trust me, make the time. Like Dr. Who's Tardis, the inside of Jo Ann's shop seems much larger than the outside, and it's full of beautiful things that must be seen (and touched) to believe. Her work has been in galleries and shows, and can be found in the hands (and hearts) of many people. Yes, I'm a great big fan, and have been for many years. Like many of the Yelpers here, I've been around the block a few times (and around the World, too, for that matter), and I've very rarely found such amazing work. In addition to beauty, Jo Ann's creations are incredible strong and durable; my first wallet from her studio is more than 35 years old... and is still beautiful. It's like silk. I don't know about one of the other poster's experience -- I've had only wonderful experiences with Jo Ann. I find her to be friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable. I tend to find that people will treat you as you treat them, however. She is also very thoughtful -- when you want something, but aren't certain exactly what you want, she will help you see what would work. And, she can also 'customize' her custom work, and help you make it exclusively your own -- you will simply not find more beautiful work anywhere else! Very, very highly recommended!

So, as a surprise for my sister, I went to Jackie's shop to look into getting a bag made for my sister. The shop was filled with her leather goods and she had a variety of leathers from which to choose. I decided on a cognac colored bag for her. I asked Jackie to make the exact bag style that she saw - the fold over triangle sling bag. Since I was there, I got one for myself made as well. The following week, the bags were ready to be picked up. They were beautifully made, despite an issue regarding the placement of the zipper. And, even without any specific treatment of the leather, the bags are durable and stains seem to disappear on them. My sister loves the bag and we get tons of compliments on these bags when we carry them. Yes, her work is expensive but it's unique and in my opinion, very well worth it. If you're in Burbank and looking for a wonderful leather creation, go and visit her.
