This place has been around downtown Van Nuys for four years. It's right on the corner of Van Nuys Blvd. and Sylmar Avenue so it's very hard to miss. There were times when I worried about it survival. Because being a cowboy hasn't always been popular. And that's what the general store specializes in. Cowboy gear for women, men and children.. Well, like a popularity certainly not the case anymore at the general store. They have incredible merchandise for both men and women and a few for kids. Their selection makes western wear look cool and stylish. There were definitely items in there I wanted to buy. They had some gorgeous clothes for women. Styles to put wranglers as a shame. These clothes are authentic and yet made of great quality fabrics and materials. I don't think I've ever seen a greater selection of cowboy boots for women and kids. The price goes from about $2000 all the way down to $200. So there's something for everyone. The clothing line for women is very western as you would expect. But the quality is absolutely amazing. Service is really funny. The people waiting on you are definitely a throwback from a different era. They most certainly aren't used to servicing women like me, but they did so graciously with a smile. It's kind of like having your grumpy old grandpa waiting on you, but you know he adores you no matter what. When I left, they were all smiling, and it was clear that they were proud to work there. I love the decor, the store and the vintage posters. It's like stepping back in time. Please go visit the general store and all the other merchants along that block. There are some Van Nuys, greatest craftsman and merchandisers and they need to be frequented and honored. read more

I came in needing a full western outfit for a wedding and ended up spending close to $2,000 here. Unfortunately, the experience did not match the amount I spent. When I walked in, there were no other customers, but I was not greeted or helped until I awkwardly approached the employees myself and explained what I needed. The service felt cold and unwelcoming, which was disappointing, especially for a store where customers may need guidance putting together a full look. I also later found the boots I purchased, which were priced around $900 here, typically retail for closer to $500 elsewhere. I understand markups happen, especially in specialty stores, but that kind of difference felt excessive. I only purchased everything because I was under time pressure and needed the outfit for an event. Had I had more time, I would not have chosen to shop here. Overall, the selection may be useful in a pinch, but the pricing and customer service left a lot to be desired. read more

Do NOT bring your felt hats here to get stiffened up. They charged so, so much and did a horrible and lazy job. I asked them to fix the job they did, and they barely made an attempt to rectify the situation. Meanwhile, they exuded terrible attitudes (all the older employees). Just rude and unhappy. I started coming here with my dad when I was a little girl. (I'm now 53.) I've gone several times with my daughter. Their boot selection is amazing with some of the best brands and craftsmanship available. They are not cheap, but you're paying for quality and a gorgeous pair. They have a nice collection of hats from reasonably-priced to really high end and expensive. It depends on what you're looking for. Lots of clothing to check out as well: from western shirts to rugged jackets and jeans. They have many accessories as well (buckles, belts, spurs, bolo ties, etc.) I kind of want to buy everything in the store. The staff is really knowledgeable, helpful, and they all support each other. The owner is a nice guy, a gentleman, and a cowboy. It's a great store. If you're looking for your next line dancing fit or what you need for Stagecoach, this is where you need to go. Country General Store has been in the valley for almost 40 years. It's always a treat to drop by here. They specialize in cowboy boots and cowboy hats. It's always so fun looking throughout the store at the different styles. My favorite thing about this store is their staff. So friendly and helpful. They can help you with any of their sizing and styling as well. They have a great selection of belts and buckles as well. They do cowboy hat cleanings too for $45. read more

Went in to buy a specific Stetson hat that I saw on their website. Stetson regular price was $330 and free shipping. Exact same hat, size, and color at Country General Store was $385. Now, I understand supporting brick and mortar stores, but $55 more for a hat is A LOT. The floor sales associates are not authorized to offer discounts or match prices, so he went in the back and asked the owner and it was a flat no. It was the first time I was in the store, and it will be the last. This owner would rather lose a customer than save a sale and gain repeat business. If there is a problem with wholesale pricing or margins, he should take it up with Stetson and not take it out on the customer. And that's why we'll be seeing their "Going out of Business" sign soon. I don't recommend anyone go there, but if you do, go in well informed of the market value and manufacturer's recommended price of what you're buying. read more

As soon as you enter you're greeted with the country ambiance and view of wide array of products. There's a selection of everything from hats, boots, belts, to clothing. In regard to price, everything seems reasonable in accordance to the establishment you're in - it's not a small store, don't expect low-steal prices. I'm greeted by a team member asking if I have any questions. Within the first minute the experience is pleasant and I'm decided that this might be a spot worth coming back to. I'm then greeted by another team member confirming what I'm now keen on purchasing for the day. A few steps ahead, the additional team member joining in ready to guide me to where their products are. Attention to service, except, I didn't ask to be chaperoned. I understand the issues with theft but I never gave a sign of that being on my mind. Nonetheless, continued browsing and asked to try the item on in the fitting room. You guessed it, staff if waiting right outside once you're done. I wanted to check out more items but simply paid for what I tried on and walked away - if you can ignore things as such I guess it's worth checking it out. read more

I feel so disappointed after reading all the 5 star reviews. I expected, in the very least, a pleasant experience. I love supporting local small businesses with all my heart, so it pains me to write a 1 star review, but I want to warn others that despite the high average rating of this place, there's a chance the owners and staff will be very rude and unwelcoming. Several other yelpers wrote about how they were followed throughout the store, being leered at, made to feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. The employee who follows you around doesn't even ask you if you want help or even attempt to make friendly conversation. It's crazy, it's as if their job is to make sure that you have an unpleasant experience. They just follow you, stand waaaay too close, and glare at you. Why do that to your customers? It's just plain rude. They might have a great selection as others have pointed out, but I would rather support people who are not rude. What gives, Country General? Wife, daughter and I came here a few years back to get riding boots for horseback riding. Excellent service and great selections of boots, hats and western shirts. But I will say the staff, one in particular was a little off, what I mean is that this gentleman, sales rep I guess, didn't necessarily follow but the dude stayed in one spot the entire time as if watching me. After all that I tried on some button downs and this gentleman continued to leer and remained in the same spot watching me as I was in the fitting room and the fitting rooms are very small and not quite private. Being a guy, it wasn't too off putting but for a lady definitely not the vibe. Again great store but the staff yo, needs a little help on people skills and reading the room. I normally don't like to leave negative reviews, but I think it's only fair that future shoppers know what I experienced. The reason I decided to shop at this establishment is because I was told they were (movie) studio friendly (as they even claim to be on their website). Upon calling the store to request photos of two varying hats, I was quickly dismissed and told that I would have to take the drive and check out the hats in person, despite the current pandemic. The reason being, that they were too busy at the current moment. They didn't even offer to take my number to facilitate my request at a later time. The next day I visited in person to find an empty store with two employees on staff, including the woman who I had spoke to the day before sitting down behind the counter. She didn't even stand to greet me. It was my mistake, because I told the workers that I was there to pick up the two hats for a television show, which in retrospect, I never should have done. Never having taken the hats out of the box, I returned to the studio, placed them in a safe place and learned a couple of days later that we would no longer be needing the hats. I called the store and asked them about their return policy. I was told that as long as the hats were never used or never taken out of the box, and of course after a thorough inspection, that they would refund the items completely. Today, one week after purchasing the hats, I sent a driver to return the hats. The man working the counter refused to open the box or inspect them as he remembered me as being "studio folk," as he calls it, and told the driver in his harshest tone that they do not take "studio" returns. I proceeded to call the establishment and encountered what I can only imagine was a similar tone that the driver was met with. He repeated to me what he told the driver, and even insisted that I bought the hats two weeks prior even though it had only been 7 days. I had actually called twice regarding the return policy and never was a time limit discussed. After arguing my point, he proclaimed nastily that he would take the hats back, but at a 50% restocking fee, and proceeded to hang up on me. read more

I came across this place in an advertisement for R Watson boots and thought I would give it a look. Yesterday morning, my wife, daughter and I drove about thirty minutes to Van Nuys in hopes of seeing some boots that we have only been able to see online but not try on. Upon arriving we were greeted by Jose who was absolutely amazing. Of course he checked out the boots we had on and mine were nothing special, but he did not judge. I told him that I have pairs of Lucchesse, Anderson Bean, Horsepower Top Hand and of course my trusty Justin Ropers that I was wearing. I asked about R Watson which I had only seen online. I barely had to say anything and Jose was bringing multiple options to try on all while sharing his knowledge of what's selling and what's comfortable. He even brought boots for my wife and daughter to try on even though they were just along for the ride. I have to admit, R Watsons are some of the most comfortable boots I've tried on ever. While we left with only a pair of jeans because I was looking for a certain color boot, I am writing this review specifically for the amazing customer service Jose provided. He is top notch and knows how to give you all the information you need. While the prices are a little more than what you will find online, it is one of few places in the Los Angeles area where you can try on the high end boot and walk away with it. Thank you, Jose!
