Beautiful man made lake. A nice place to picnic at, hike to and fish at. Each person is able to take 5 fish. On this day in October, lots of folks were successfully catching rainbow trout. So pretty! Other fish species here include: bass, catfish, and bluegill. There is a dock with benches where you can fish comfortably. Plentiful parking above. You walk down stairs and down a short path to the lake. Good news...there are bathrooms. Bad news...they are smelly, fly ridden and disgusting. It was tempting for many to do just do their business outside in the wilderness. It was that gross.

This little man-made lake is easy to get to unless there is a road closure. The road that was most direct was closed. One part of the road was not paved. It was muddy so they closed it. We had to go around the lake to get to the entrance. Get here early when they open. The dock is the best spot to fish in the summer. It can get pretty full. There is no shade though. We started fishing out on one of the beach areas where we also launched our kayaks. Unfortunately, there are way too many reeds along the shore of the lake. We moved to the dock and wormed our way into a spot. Everyone is super nice and helpful. No one was territorial. Someone even gave us fresh worm bait. From the dock, you can see the fish swimming all around. People were catching fish of many sizes. We must have had the wrong hooks because everyone around caught a fish. We had some nibbles on the worm, but that was it. Overall, the $5 fee was worth it. The lake is pretty. The sound echos though so you hear lots of people talking or shouting. The bathrooms are rustic and dirty. I like that kayaks are allowed. I didn't know paddleboard were not. It is worth the short, windy drive if you don't want to go all the way to Big Bear.

Jenks Lake was still my favorite winter hike (view my previous post for the specific details of the hike). After 2-3 days of rain, it was the perfect opportunity to do a snow hike. Depending on how fast the snow melts, you may need snow shoes or micro spikes. Overall, a fun and easy hike in the low 30°F. Short video of the hike for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isD9qvLiZaM

Fun place to fish at, can be a walk sometimes if main gates are closed. But definitely the spot to be at. With beautiful scenery

This is a very pretty lake, especially early mornings when it's still quiet. While there is the peace you find in the outdoors there were some cons I'd like to point out: -Fishing wasn't too good. I only caught one tiny fish while here, and others down the way also had the same experience. -The bathrooms are gross! There are no sinks to wash your hands at their facilities. -It kinda got crowded by 11am too. SO many people! -You gotta pay for parking (which is filled by lunchtime). I know it's common to pay, but, I still don't like it lol -The GPS took us to some "hills have eyes" type of spot in the mountain. Don't trust it! Follow the signs or directions other yelpers have called out. Despite my gripes, it's still an awesome place to catch some peace for a while. It's also a nice area to hike. I need to find out the best time of year to catch some good sized fishies. I'll be back once I got that figured out.

Wow! Where do I start. It's absolutley beautiful! We came to visit during our winter camping. It is a winter wonderland here! They have a few trails. Now we hiked from another camp ground to get to the lake. The lake is so big and looks amazing frozen. There are so many beautiful photo opportunities. The family loved it. We can't wait to visit again.

Jenks lake was still closed mid-March, similar to many other national forests and campgrounds in southern California at this time. While the road was closed, that didn't mean that we were unable to see the lake. We parked at the entrance and walked. The best view may not have even been of the lake; instead, it was of the snow-capped mountains in the distance from road heading down to the lake. We arrived at the lake to see that it was low. I would've thought that Spring would be its peak level, a time when snow was melting and filling the lake. However, it appeared low with little sign of rising water. Based on the rutted trails on the dry lakebed, it had probably been low for a long time. If not for the other pictures online of the lake that show the lake full up to the pine trees, I would expect the lake to be completely dry by the end of Summer.

A beautiful little lake nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains. Jenks Lake is also a hiking trail from the Barton Flats Campground and roughly two miles to get too. We hiked to Jenks Lake from Barton Flats Campground and would not have done it any other way. The lake has a rim trail you are also able to walk around which we did. The lake has picnic tables and lots of shade. For those that are not able to hike to the lake you may also park in the parking lot for a small fee and a short walking distance.

We camped at Barton Flats and walked the trail from there. You cross the street which is a little tricky with smaller children The trail was a switchback going back and forth with an nice incline some shady area I found the trail here on yelp pretty accurate information they said it was like 2 miles and it was We took a three year old to 50ish and in between we had one in a back pack. There is a little bridge to cross for the kids they thought it was great. Keep the kids in the middle of the trail the edges are soft and unstable The littles got tired but once we got to the lake they got lunch The lake was super crowded my husband went earlier like 7 :30 in the morning to fish in his float tub there was already like 24 people in the lake although he didn't catch any keeper others did as he enjoyed his fly fishing and meeting other fishermen floating around about 9ish the lake was full of people canoes floaters blow up boats By the time we got there 11 ish it was crowded the doc was crowded the shore was crowded the parking was crowded in fact there was a line people waiting to park way to crowded. If there is space it's a Nice place for a picnic take chairs blankets there is some benches in the shade down side is dirty smelly pit potty

First thing first, before you head to Jenks Lake Use this coordinate on your GPS N 34°09.927' W116°53.052' Or go to this website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/sbnf/recarea/?recid=26537 The address that's listed on some search engine display as 34701 Mill Creek Rd. Mentone Ca. or Yucaipa Ca. is incorrect. Following this route will end at a Ranger Station House. You're here no problem. One of the helpful friendly Ranger will direct you to the correct destination and provide you with traditional paper map. Can't read the old fashion paper map ? Follow this direction: From the Ranger Station parking lot take a Right , continue on highway 38 for another 25 miles, make a Right into Jenks Lake West . Drive another 2 miles to the parking lot . Parking Fee is $5 per car, or $20 per bus, CASH ONLY. Parking lot to picnic site /lake, there are 32 steps of stairs before you head to your destination . Or take the cement paved road down a slight hill . Restroom is a hole in the ground with a raised toilet seat, toilet paper provided, no sink or running water. Bring your own soap and water to wash your hands. The attending Ranger on Sunday May 15, 2016 maintained the restroom fairly clean. He was friendly and informative. Picknic sites with tables and grill, charcoal only or propane stove. No fire wood. Hiking trail is pretty easy around the lake. My three girls 4-6 yrs. & puppy did half way. Going to Jenks Lake trail some sections are tough , some path can be rough step 80° incline. Watch your kids and pets going off track can be a very steep drop off. Fishing , no license required for kids 16 years and younger. ( Not sure if an adult need fishing license if they don't plan to fish, accompanying kids 16 or younger) . California Department of Fish and Wild life offers two free fishing days each year. Free fishing days for 2016 are July 2 and September 3. www.wildlife.ca.gov Rainbow Trout 5 per person , unfortunately my boys didn't have any luck . Can fish near the river or on the newly build dock. Hand powered small boats are welcome in the water . No motorized boats allowed. No swimming , you probably wouldn't want to, water looks murky.

Jenks Lake has beautiful views as the pictures show. We tried fishing from the shoreline but became challenging because of the algea. We decide to move to the dock and try fishing there. After several hours, we decide to call it a day after seeing other also with no luck We didnt catch anything but had fun anyways. FYI- No swimming aloud and dogs need be on leashes. 3stars for algea over growth and low stock. Would come again with family for picnic and hiking.

To reach the ponds, after you park, you'll need to walk upwards to the left where there is a dirt foot trail to the ponds. There are two ponds. The first one that you'll see, is the smaller one. There are a few ducks that were here when we arrived. We saw several people fishing in this pond because the park recently stocked up the pond with fish. Although, when I spoke to someone who was leaving, they caught 3 fishes and were heading home. Another person who just arrived an hour earlier, still didn't catch any fish. My advice is to go early in the morning when the fish are hungry to catch the fish. To see the larger pond, just keep heading upwards to the right and you'll immediately see it to your left. This pond has most of the ducks congregating here. We saw less people fishing at this pond maybe because there were more ducks. The main reason to going to this park was to feed the ducks. You're not supposed to feed them bread. We brought bird seeds and sunflower seeds (with no salt) with us. When we went, there were three types of ducks: Mallards (The males have the pretty green colored feathers from their head to their necks while the females are covered with different shades of brown. I like the light tan feathered ones. You may see the all-white feathered Mallard which is pretty too.) Muscovy (they look like they're wearing red masks lol) The ones here were rather large compared to the other ducks. American Wigeon (they're smaller than the Mallard & Muscovy with green feather streak from their eyes going down their necks. At the top of their heads, the feathers are a white streak going down their necks as well. The main part of their body is covered with brown feathers.) Overall, we had an enjoyable time here feeding the ducks and relaxing in the park. Great free activity to bring along your kids to see the ducks. Just remember not to feed them bread because it lacks nutritional value and can lead to health problems for the birds.

My husband planned a wonderful trip for Labor day and even though this is one of the most popular trails and on a 3 day weekend, it wasn't crowded. We saw a good number of groups but there was very little passing along the trails. This particular trailhead is located only about 1.5 hours from West LA and really easy to get to. Just past the town of Mentone, continue along highway 38 about 20 minutes past the ranger station and arrive at Jenks Lake where the trailhead begins just past the paved parking lot. To summit Mt. Gorgonio, which is the highest peak in southern California at 11,502 ft is the ultimate goal and starting from this particular trailhead it will be a trip of about 24 miles. It can be done in one very long day or campsites are available for a more leisurely trip. Permits are required but are free. To park you need an adventure pass to display on your car. To get a permit you need to send in for one using the website listed above. Parking passes can be purchased in advance at REI. The trail head at Jenks Lake starts you off at 6,900 ft. After 2.5 miles is Poop Out hill where the trail will split to Dry Lake or Dollar Lake. We took the route towards Dry Lake. It is about 7.5 miles from the trail head until Dry Lake at 9,000 ft. Dry Lake is where some campsites are offered, it is also the place to stop and refill your water. As with all backpacking, you have to carry in everything you need including water. You can refill here using your preferred sanitation method. There are two campsites at Dry Lake and the next site is Trail Flats about 1.3 miles past Dry Lake, which is where we camped. From Trail Flats, you can begin the summit at Sky High Trail and will be another 4 miles to the top. This is incredible scenery and remember to bring plenty of water as your last water source was Dry Creek. Also bring a hat because at this elevation, you probably don't want the sun beaming down on you. There are a good number of switchbacks but I didn't find it to be that strenuous but at that point, I had put down my 25lb pack at the camp site. It will take about 2.5 hours and affords incredible views including the wreckage of plane. The main perk of taking this trail is that the ascents are gradual. The scenery is just amazing and the trails are well maintained. It's incredible to see entire hillsides and trees just flattened due to previous avalanches. The trees are just beautiful and even uprooted are interesting and intricate. Overall I really enjoyed this trip as it can be taken as leisurely as you'd like or as quickly (and much more strenuously) as you'd like. The air is thin but it feels wonderful to get away from the smog of LA. The view a the top includes Mt. Baldy, the San Bernardinos, Mt San Jacinto, and various other things I probably can't identify. The hike goes through mostly tall shaded trees but changes to rocky meadows and falling trees, and some small streams to cross. It's anything but boring! Be careful of altitude sickness, it can hit at any moment, be prepared for possible rain, and enjoy this beautiful wilderness. Check out this great blog for more detail: http://www.modernhiker.com/2009/09/22/hiking-san-gorgonio-mountain-via-south-fork-trail/

The second half of the trail looks more normal, right around Dollar Lake, then soon after that the trees eventually thin out as they're starved of oxygen at higher altitudes. Unfortunately this place will take a while to fully recover, but it will be fun seeing it come back to life. My dad really loved the meadows and ferns and lush greener that used to be here, but I didn't get a chance to see it, and now it's gone. If you want a longer hike and gentler incline to the top of San Gorgonio, this is the one for you. If you want scenery not devastated by a fire, and a little shorter with a more rapid incline, I'd recommend starting at the Vivian Creek trailhead instead.

We hit the trail going clockwise and felt the burn as we headed up the mountainside. It's listed as "moderate" on the All Trails app but we both felt it edged much more into the "hard" category. There is one section where we literally were scaling the steep trail -- taking 3 steps forward and slipping 2 steps back (or so it felt like!). The trail eventually takes you up to the top where you'll get views of the lowlands below. It's truly beautiful. It's also one of the less popular trails so you won't likely see many people along your trek. After wrapping up your hike, head back to the car and make the side trip to Keller Peak Fire Lookout. During our visit, the lookout tower interior was closed due to COVID-19. But it's still worth making the journey to chat with the lookout ranger and hear what it takes to be a volunteer. In one word: peaceful. Though our ranger volunteer was very chatty. Clearly, he didn't see many people this weekend besides us! It was well worth the journey!
