Recently moved back to Hawaii in September so needed to find a new dentist for my family & I. Found Kaneohe Family Dental Care here on Yelp and luckily they happened to take my insurance (Tricare). I've actually been putting off finding a dentist because I've been so busy with other things, but I had a tooth break off (it was actually a newer crown I had put in, I think, in May 2016 or so) and Bobbie was able to squeeze me in the same day but I ended up needing to go the next day instead which wasn't any problem. She recognized me right off the bat with my missing front tooth and was just as friendly in person as on the phone. I waited about two minutes before a technician/hygienist (I never know what anyone's job title is!) brought me back, I think her name is Allie and she's also very nice, she talked to me a little to get a short history and not too long after, I met Dr. Keller who took very good care of me. I never felt rushed and he gave me his recommendations and made sure I understood all my options but did not push anything on me. This happened to be a few days before the New Year so he and his wife were just about to fly to the mainland to spend the holiday with their daughters so I felt very fortunate they could fit me in as I'm pretty sure I'd be hard pressed to find another dentist at that time. I ended up needing to get a retainer thing they call a flapper, kind of like a denture I think, which took about a week to make -- though I do really want an implant, my mouth needs a LOT of other work (I've got several molars missing and other nonsense due to lack of dental insurance in the past) so before setting me up with that he's working out a treatment plan for me so we're not just jumping around my mouth and ending up doing something unnecessary (I appreciate this though I hate having to use this retainer!) Since my initial appointment I think I've been back twice, once for my retainer fitting and another for a routine cleaning and new patient X-Rays. For my cleaning I worked with Donna who was VERY informative; I learned more during that one cleaning than I ever have about taking care of my mouth and now my gums are looking & feeling better than they have in a long time. I've also had both of my sons in to see Dr. Keller just today and they had a really great time. They were able to take them back without me and I guess it seemed so fun my mom (who came as back-up) wants to switch dentists now. They made balloon heads out of rubber gloves and gave them each a toy from their "treasure chest", both of which they are still enjoying. I'm really happy with my experience and definitely recommend Kaneohe Family Dental, their name may suggest they treat patients of all ages but in my opinion I think it's also because they treat their patients like family.

I found the billing process to be very stressful and poorly handled…read more Before my appointment, I requested that the office submit a predetermination (pre-treatment estimate) to my dental insurance so I could better understand what would be covered before moving forward with treatment. My request was declined, and I was told I needed to pay a large estimated amount upfront as a requirement to book my appointment. After my insurance processed the claim, I learned that my actual out-of-pocket responsibility was significantly lower--more than $1,000 less than what I had been required to pay upfront. I had to contact my insurance company myself to understand the claim, and they advised me to contact the dental office because I had already paid before my insurance claim was finalized. After the office reviewed my account, they confirmed that I had overpaid and issued a refund, which I am currently waiting to receive by mail. I appreciate that they corrected my account, but I don't think patients should have to request a refund themselves after paying a large estimated amount upfront. I also believe there should be more transparency and confidence in the billing process so patients fully understand that the amount collected is only an estimate and may change once insurance processes the claim. If you have dental insurance, I highly recommend reviewing your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) after your claim is processed and comparing it with what you paid. If something doesn't seem right, don't hesitate to ask the office to review your account. Overall, the dental care itself was decent--though not the best--but I believe the billing process and communication could be significantly improved to make the experience much less stressful for patients.

NO ALOHA, NOT OHANA…read more I asked for help but I was disregarded. I asked for flexibility because it wasn't part of my original treatment plan and was denied. Poor communication, lack of accountability, and zero regard for patients. I'd been complaining about my tooth for months and was told nothing was wrong. Enduring the pain, turned out to be fractured....causing an issue that could have been avoided. Staff informed me that this nearly $1500 procedure where I was responsible for at least half would be "no problem" when I asked to pay monthly, so I agreed to the amount where they said we can work out the payments after. But in the end they demanded full payment immediately and refused any partial payment. To me, it's insult to injury when this was an inconvenient bill that could've been prevented. The fact that I've ALWAYS paid the full amount no matter the cost and asked for them to work with me tells me they DON'T know their customers and they are NOT a family oriented business. Unless my mind is changed, help me find a new dentist!!

Mutha! So it all…read morestarted when I was snacking on some Gardetto's Garlic Chips. Yes, those chips are very garlicky, but on the downside, the chips are very hard in texture. After chomping on some of those garlic chips then swallowing......I noticed something odd had happened in my mouth. What happened??? I basically cracked a tooth! Ai-yai-yai!!! I texted Dr. Steve & showed him what I was eating & told him - "I either chipped my tooth, or that the cap/crown fell off". There was no recovery because I ended up eating it. Lol! Dr. Steve immediately asked me if I was in any pain (luckily I was not in pain). He then gave me dates of availability on when I could come into his office to see him. Got a quick appointment with Dr. Steve, and while visiting Dr. Steve, it turns out that I cracked a tooth. I was assuming that the tooth I had cracked had no nerves, but when Dr. Steve took an x-ray of the area where the cracked tooth was, it turns out that the cracked tooth actually had nerves inside, so luckily the way my tooth cracked, it didn't cause me any pain. What next? Dr. Steve was able to save my tooth & put a crown over my cracked tooth. His hands are truly magical, as when he had to numb my mouth to clean up & prep my tooth for a crown, I barely felt anything when he stuck that needle in my mouth. A mold was made of my mouth, then a temporary tooth was made to protect my cracked tooth. After getting the permanent crown made, I went back to visit Dr. Steve so he could install my new crown. No pain at all installing my new crown, and the new crown looked like my real tooth! If you ever need any dental work done, see Dr. Steven Kumasaka, as he is highly skilled & very knowledgeable!

I don't like teeth cleaning per se, but after trying several dentists in town, enduring excruciating teeth cleanings, I was amazed how easy they make it. They have all updated equipment, including x-ray machines where I can just sit in my chair and they swing it over and snap, done. I forgot her name, but she had red hair. I implemented the routine she recommended, and 6 months later, my oral health seemed to have improved a lot. Dr. Oka also was the first dental professional who informed me that there is a connection between bruxism and sleep disorders. He recommended I get a sleep study in February -- and he didn't just recommend it; he asked which medical group my PCP is part of and informed me about how to get started. I did a sleep study, and I did end up being diagnosed with a sleep disorder! The treatment that followed was life-changing, and I wouldn't have prioritized this without this info from Dr. Oka.
