I was referred to Oral Surgery by my primary dentist for a dental implant procedure. With my year-end benefit expiring, I had to get the first available appointment in Kaneohe, which is a much further drive than the closest Ala Moana location. Despite the driving distance, my entire experience with the staff there (Honey and Dr Hironaka) was magnificent. I mean you do not usually use the word magnificent for any dental procedure but they really handled me with care and the overall procedure was not that painful. Dr Hironaka spent a lot of time explaining the procedure and answering my questions to make me feel at ease. They also follow up with a phone call to make sure my recovery went well as expected . Today was the day I finally had to get my wisdoms removed. All I can say is, it went by so fast and it's not as scary as you think it is. I normally go to a clinic to get my teeth checked out and upon my last visit to the clinic they offered to remove my wisdom teeth, however, I turned them down because I would rather go to a place where they specialize in oral surgery! Hence, I came to Oral Surgery Hawaii and got a patient referral! I had two visits, the first being the consultation which was very informative and quick and the second visit was to get my wisdoms removed. Dr. Thomas Yamamoto ended up doing the extraction on my wisdom teeth and him and his assistants are super kind! During the whole procedure they always made sure I was doing okay! Since four of my wisdom teeth needed to be removed I opted for the nitrous oxide (laughing gas) because I get anxious around needles! Honestly, the whole procedure was so quick it was already over before I knew it! If possible I would suggest you bring earbuds! It helps take your mind off of the procedure. TLDR: Tooth cracked and infected with no way to salvage it. Total ~4 months between oral surgery and regular dentist, now I have my new fake implanted tooth! PAIN FREE under local anesthesia. COST: With my dental insurance for EVERYTHING was about ~$2200-2400 (forgot the exact amount) for doctor kitamura's portion (extraction and screw implant) , and another $1500-$2000 for my regular dentist (the crown) portion. too lazy to look back at my statements Disclaimer: This is only MY OWN experience and situation. Everyone's case will probably be different. CONSULT WITH UR surgeon/DENTIST!! HISTORY: My gum was frequently getting painful, red, swollen. Finally went to dentist, got an X-ray where they said my tooth was cracked at the root, causing infection literally almost to the point of periodontal disease. Hoping I could save my tooth I went to a root canal specialist where they told me I had no other choice but to extract whole tooth and get implant. Started googling the process and ofc getting mixed experience, some in particular saying they had to get general anesthesia cause they can't handle pain so they recommend getting put to sleep. EXTRACTION/PARKING: Free public parking for his pearl ridge & windward location! Absolutely no issues. Met with Dr. Kitamura. My main concern was pain. Told him I have a very low pain threshold. Dr kindly reassured me that patients generally feel little to no pain, just mostly pressure. Answered all my questions and literally my whole process was pain free (just pressure like he said) and I only did local anesthesia cause general would be more costly. I only took 500mg Tylenol once after the procedure cause I was worried, but literally had NO PAIN. Side note: I do recommend bringing a list of questions and WRITE THEM DOWN, because doctors will sometimes ask "do you have any questions?" And u won't have them at the moment but they come to you as soon as u get home. A week later went for my check up, then another check up for my final assessment. Thankfully my implant was good but just not fun living with a gap in my mouth for months. Overall I would most definitely recommend oral surgery with doctor kitamura! Office staff was nice as well! It was DEFINITELY a very costly procedure for me but I learned now how important oral health is and prayyyyyyy I will never have to go through this again. read more

It was my second visit to see Dr. Hironaka and as the first time everything went smoothly and he was very thorough and professional. His assistants, Honey and Carmel were awesome too! Honey was very friendly and made me feel really comfortable about the procedure. The extraction was really quick, only about two minutes for two teeth, the only thing was the shots were a little sore, but it was worth it. An old crown fell out, my only option was to pull the remaining tooth. Oral Surgery Hawai'i was great. When I was sitting in the dental chair waiting for my procedure I was showed an estimated statement & my copay. I was asked to pay at that time before my visit. I asked them to confirm that they wanted me to pay at that time. I just couldn't believe I was being asked to pay at that time. They confirmed that they wanted my payment. I have never been asked to pay my copay prior to a visit. I should prefice this by saying that I worked in the medical field for 40 years. I also have dual dental coverage, so certainly not a "cash" patient. Payment is usually collected after your visit. My credit card was not returned until after my visit. If I wasn't able to pay at that time, would they have refused me treatment? Perhaps this should have been discussed prior to the appointment. Brianna was my nurse before the procedure and she was so informative and sweet, it definitely helped me relax. I woke up Labor Day morning with pain on the left side of my mouth. Because I'm 5 months pregnant, I needed a medical clearance from my OB. I was referred to Hawaii Family Dental first, they concluded I needed my top left wisdom removed. They referred me to Oral Surgery Hawaii on the other side of the mall. So I walked over just to see if I could make an appointment. Not only were they able to see me that day for a consult, I was able to get an appointment the next day for the extraction. I had ALOT of anxiety. I've never had my wisdoms removed, nor have I ever had dental work done during a pregnancy. I met Dr. Hironaka for my consult, and explained my anxiety and concerns for getting work done while pregnant. He listened and did a fantastic job making sure I was at ease going through with the procedure. After looking at my X-ray and inside my mouth, he said my wisdom did in fact needed to be removed and with the way it looked, would be fairly quick. He also explained that at this point in my pregnancy, I was a perfect candidate for the extraction and explained why. I told him that at Hawaii Family Dental, they prescribed me amoxicillin, and he said he would recommend a mouth rinse instead because I'm pregnant. That made me feel better. I went in the next day for the extraction. Everyone, from the front desk to the dental assistants are all so welcoming, kind and professional. I already felt really good about having the procedure done because Dr. Hironaka explained everything well and assured me I would be in good hands. All my worries went out the window. I kid you not, after the numbing (which is the worst part), it took him 10 seconds to remove my tooth. I was speechless. I went home, didn't take any pain meds (again because I didn't feel comfortable since I'm pregnant) and I was fine all day. I scheduled a consultation here for my teenager's wisdom teeth removal. After filling out the paperwork and being taken into the exam room my daughter mentioned how nervous she was and that she wanted to be sedated for the procedure. The nurse returned to the room and said the surgeon didn't want to consult with us if she was wanting sedation because "he doesn't do that" and we would be charged for the consult. I replied that she hadn't been given her options yet (pros/cons or risks/benefits or cost difference... you know, the usual things you discuss at a CONSULT) so wasn't informed enough to make a decision yet. I was advised to reschedule for another surgeon in the office if sedation was being considered. Back at the front desk, I was offered to reschedule for another week with a different surgeon. I suggested that perhaps patients should be informed BEFORE the consult if even considering sedation would present a scheduling issue. You know, before wasting their time and gas, and scheduling their day around a needless appointment. She replied that the first person scheduling us was "kinda new". Then again I was told "we don't do sedation" but that was followed up with, "would you like to schedule with the other doctor; she only is available Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday"... which is pretty confusing, right? Like, who is "we" and how does this other surgeon fit in here and why are you running her schedule but she isn't considered "WE"... so many questions. I pondered the possible arrangement and finally said, "wait does your office have a whole different staff on different days?" and was told "yes". I mean, kind of pertinent information for continuity of care, follow-up, etc... I tried asking the sedation cost differences and again, "they didn't know".... I mean, I'm not going to base medical choices for my teen off of being entirely uninformed about anything at ALL, even price... Here's the deal; let me tell you what a CONSULT should look like: "Hello, I'm doctor so-and-so. I've taken a look at your X-rays and it's looking like your extraction will be (insert level of difficulty/ length of procedure / recovery time frame etc). Based on that and your past medical history, I think (insert level of sedation recommended). The cost involved will be (xxxx). If that sounds good we can go ahead and schedule, or we can discuss other options. I'm confident this procedure will go smoothly and you'll do great!" Ha! Now where's my $500?? I just did a better job than this office. This place is completely backwards; who ever heard of making decisions with zero information? Honestly I'm not shocked though... they are located INSIDE the MALL. I had an infected wisdom tooth that I put off for far too long due to fear and a busy schedule with work and kids. It got super bad (pain and all) and Dr. Sheizik and her team took me in the day after receiving my referral, THAT FAST. They were able to remove two wisdom teeth from my left side. Mind you, I was SO nervous due to a previously bad experience with another doctor extracting one of my teeth. They took me in the day before New Years Eve and I am so so so thankful for that. I got to enjoy New Years Eve with no swelling and VERY little pain. The pain I had with the infection was excruciating and the fact that Dr. Sheizik took me in last minute to take me out of that pain was a blessing. I'm on my third day of healing and I feel great with NO swelling. Her medical assistant, Brianna, is the fricken BOMB. I started having an anxiety/panic attack (your thoughts and nerves can take over sometimes) and she totally calmed me down. I'm so thankful she was there. PLEASE do not put off removing your wisdom teeth like me, I wouldn't wish that type of pain for anyone. It takes like 2-3 minutes for one to be pulled out and I felt NONE of it while wide awake. It may be scary, but go to Dr. Sheizik and you will be FINE. She makes sure you're numb so you don't feel a thing. I will be back to remove my two wisdoms on my right side. I recently had Dr. Yamamoto extract my teeth and it was quite pleasant. The team at Oral Surgery Hawaii were very detailed in explaining the process, pre and post operation. On the day of the extraction, Dr. Yamamoto was very attentive as to where the anesthesia was placed and if I felt any pain at all during the process, he would tend and resolve it immediately. My recovery was relatively painless and nothing like all the stories I have heard in the past about recovery. I now have 3 dental implants. The first two I had done in another state. The third one I had done recently by the amazing Dr. Kitamura and his awesome team! What a difference! Their Kaneohe office is beautiful. From the minute I walked in, the process was seamless and extremely professional. They have all the state of the art technology and equipment and it couldn't have gone any better. You are always going to have some discomfort with any surgery but I only experienced a little pain after the surgery which was easily managed by following through with their thorough verbal and written instructions. Dr. Kitamura also made sure I had all my questions answered and he also let me know he was available anytime if I had any problems (which I didn't but it was nice to know he was there if I needed him!).
