I ordered from Jeans through Uber eats this evening, I ordered at 6pm and now it is 8:30pm and I have not received the order. There is no estimated time of arrival on the Uber eats app and they are not using an Uber eats driver. I did not know this prior to ordering, I would not have used this place if I had known since I was on the Uber eats app for their service . How this place consistently wins The Coast's Best of Halifax is beyond me. I understand that it's cheap but surely that cannot be the only thing. We ordered last night, skipped the terrible delivery and picked it up in person. The dining room isn't just shabby, it's filthy. The food was clearly "old" and barely tasted of anything. I was highly impressed with the Lo Mein. It was my first time ordering the noodles. They were really good. The bbq pork in them seemed old, but it was tasty. It's no secret that I firmly believe that there is no good Chinese food (authentic or Americanized) to be found in Halifax. Even Fan's really doesn't get me all hot and bothered the way a great restaurant with a blend of veggie, meat, healthy, and fried dishes should. So you should keep in mind that I arrived at Jean's with my usual grumpzilla mindset the day after Chinese New Year in hopes of turning my frown upside-down. Oddly enough, where everyone else mentioned that the food far outshines the service, on my visit it was the complete opposite. Everyone I interacted with genuinely went above and beyond to be friendly, polite, attentive and helpful. Actually I think it was their service that got them up to three stars in my books. The menu is pretty big and carries all the staples along with a couple twists. My dining partners went with a chicken dish and a lunch combo that were both jaw-droppingly big for the price while I went with the fried veggies and tofu. The food was ready in no time - in fact, I think we were in and out of there within 50 minutes making it ideal for work lunches. And sure, it was tasty-ish, but certainly nothing to get too excited about with the exception of maybe the spring roll that was bordering on Pringles can in size. I suppose I'd come back if i had a hankering for Americasian cuisine but I certainly wouldn't rush if you're expecting to be blown away. (Grump grump grump.) read more

I'm not a Chinese food person - doesn't normally sit well so I avoid it; plus, just not to my tastes. However, a rainy day sometimes pulls out cravings, right? Went in and ordered the Buddhist Delight (vegetables and tofu with sauce) and it was, indeed, delightful. Not too strong of a taste (I love the strength and spice of Thai food), yet it hit the spot and you get what you pay for. It's nice if you order the side steamed rice to go with it! One thing I learned as a paramedic in this great city is how to find a great meal on the fly. Jean's fits the bill to a T! Food is wonderful, hot and delicious! Portion sizes are out of this world!! Jean's certainly isn't the best chinese food in the city, but my god, the portions! The amount of food that you receive in a standard combination plate is astounding. Each plate is literally heaping with piles of pseudo- chinese tastiness. The restaurant itself is nothing to speak of. Its small and tends to be warm in the summer, even with the air conditioner. The service is friendly enough and the food arrives quickly. I think they bring it out as it is ready, which means that sometimes one person is eating before the other's dish arrives. We've ordered both a la carte and from the large selection of combination plates. As far as value, I think the combination plates are the way to go. The selection includes all of the standards, but I like to go with the Hunan chicken, as it has a nice little kick. I usually request a veggie egg roll because to be honest, I am scared of the weird cat food mystery meat in most meat versions. Jean's is neither the best, nor the most authentic chinese you will find, but if you are in the mood for heaps of hot, fresh, tasty food with enough left over for a late night snack, Jean's is your spot! read more

Standard fare...they made it with what looked like pad sew noodles! 0 for 1. It had absolutely no taste - seriously, breathing in the stench of dog crap would have been more flavourful. Actually, it tasted like Hamburger Helper which is worse than dog shit. 0 for 2. Food arrived barely warm. 0 for 3. This shit - with maximum four bites taken out of it - will now sit in the back of my fridge for God knows how long. When the day comes that I finally get around to throwing it out, I no doubt will have an awful flashback, a terrible terrible memory of the time Jeans ONCE AGAIN charged me for shitting in my mouth. Jean's Chinese Restaurant is our office go-to for Chinese delivery. It's not my favourite, but it's adequate. The food is good, but nothing to write home about, and the prices are quite reasonable. Jean's does a couple things well that help them stand out from the other Chinese haunts in the area. They offer debit at the door delivery. Not only that, they will divvy up individual receipts so each person can pay for their own meal by debit (or cash, credit, etc). This makes life so much easier when ordering in a group and is probably THE main reason we choose Jean's for our usual Chinese fix. Also, the portion sizes are enormous. The last time I ordered, I got 3 meals out of one combo and eventually threw the last of it out. The delivery people have always provided service with a smile and never seem overwhelmed by dealing with the multiple payments and receipts. We rarely end up with mixups, which is notable, considering how many of us order. read more

Jean's gets top marks for the food and only the food. But hey, even the Soup Nazi had a line up. I've eaten in their dining room twice and stood in line picking up my order half a dozen times. This means I can relate to some comments people have about the service and decor. To say the room is dated would be kind. The service is far from great but the food makes up for it all. Instead of crying about the lack of royal treatment in regal surroundings, I started taking advantage of delivery. Tadahhh !!!!!, problem solved. They are pleasant on the phone. The wait time is under 30 minutes. The food is always piping hot. What you order is actually in the bag. Well, I am not sure what is going on with Jean's, but if you are reading this, Please Take Some Of Your Profits and Buy a Vacuum Cleaner. This place just turned me off the other day. This is my second trip but will be my last. There was more food and dirt over the floor than I have ever seen in a restaurant. I am not sure how the Health board can allow this, or who ever is in charge of that department. But Jean's clearly does not care! The waitress came over to take our order. We ordered a #2, Chicken Balls, Chicken Fried Rice with Egg Roll , we also ordered one Singapore Noodles with Two Drinks, one being water and the other an ice tea. The place only had our table and one other person eating. So not busy. Our drinks took 10 minutes to arrive at our table. The waitress was too busy chatting on the phone with a friend. Next, our food arrived, 15 minutes in, that is not bad, But, and I use this strongly. They only brought one dish, the combo meal. So after waiting another 15 minutes, I asked the waitress, are the noodles ready, she was completely unaware we did not have them. Maybe that was because she never came over in 20 minutes to see if we needed anything. So, all of a sudden she wakes up and checks, there is about a 5 minute conversation in the kitchen of strong Chinese dialogue. But no one tells us what is going on. There was a definite problem with our order. Again we sit and wait, she then pops out and says, they are on their way. That is almost comical! After waiting another 5 minutes , they arrive. At this point, the two meals are about 30 apart. Oh but wait, it gets better, not once did anyone come to refill our water. We had to ask one of the 6 staff that were having lunch for more water. Now with the lack of service , poor communication , dirty floors and complete negligence of our waitress and owners, we were offered nothing of compensation for all their errors! So, Jean's, Get Your Act Together, Clean Up your Restaurant and get some staff. You can get better food quality and far better service elsewhere in the city and not feel like you are sitting in dirt! read more

I've reviewed this before, and really liked it. That was a delivery lunch review. This is a sit-in-dinner. We were just finishing watching a hockey game at Dal and were looking for cheap eats. My Aunt suggested Jean's as my cousin loves Chinese. So we went and sat in as we all had different directions to go in afterwords. I know Jean's is the quintessential "hole-in-the-wall," but I did expect a little more. We ordered. Then the lady came and asked if we wanted a drink. My Aunt said water, and she just walked away and came back with three orders of water. My cousin wanted chocolate milk... she never got it :-( Then, my Aunt received her order of thai noodles ...... 15 minutes later my cousins and I received our not-so-hot-anymore Combination #2's. Before I get into the bulk of my review I have to confess: I have NEVER been inside Jean's. We always get delivery or my husband goes to pick it up. I literally do not know what this place looks like on the inside and I'm okay with that. Their food has always been good. It's always hot and tasty. Jean's sweet and sour chicken is awesome. I love it, my husband loves it, anyone we've ever fed it to loves it. It's just delicious. No it's not healthy, but it's freaking good. Their Cantonese Chow Mein is probably my favourite with yummy noodles, lots of fresh veggies, different kinds of meat (pork,chicken,shrimp, scallops and more!) and enough to feed yourself dinner and lunch for days! The prices are reasonable, considering the HUGE portions you get, and we've always had very quick service. The food is usually ready before my husband can get downtown to pick it up. If there were a poll that collected votes on the best of things in the city, this wouldn't be my choice for the best of Chinese food. Having said that, this is a pretty good place - I've eaten here a few times and I'm pretty sure I'll eat here again. The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired - it's really no frills - but the service is good and the food is pretty tasty. I come for a combo plate of completely North Americanized Chinese food - chicken balls are totally my bag. Anyway, you get a ton of food and you get it for a good price. Even my husband, who's kind of picky, is able to go off the combo menu and find something he likes. The food is good, but I don't dream about it. My only real mishap here is when I burnt the roof of my mouth with a piece of broccoli. But I admit, that was my fault for stealing a giant piece of broccoli off someone else's plate the minute it hit the table and then shoving the whole thing into my mouth. I have noticed a sharp decline in the quality of the food from Jean's. This used to be my go-to restaurant before becoming hooked on The Great Wall. In comparsion to their food Jean's just doesn't cut it anymore sadly. I ordered kung pao chicken and will likely be tossing it, the amount of sodium (MSG?) in this dish is probably like 100% of my daily recommended intake. The old standard for when I first started to order out, living close to the Halifax Shopping Centre. Jean's provides a reasonable priced, over sized helping of Chinese food. Well I use Chinese food liberally. It's the North American version of the stuff.. Heaping helpings of rice, and depending on the combination plate.. they have at least 20 of them.. plenty of the other options to go along with it. As far as chinese food in Halifax goes, my experience is limited. I've had some that's been terrible, and I've had some that's been ok. BUT, 6 years ago I had the opportunity to try a little spot at the top of Spring Garden called Jean's Chinese, and since then I've never looked back. Customer Service: 5/5 I've tried the in person dine-in service, and I've had the phone-in delivery service. Friendly, quick, and accommodating. When it comes to Chinese food, it's important that substitutes in orders can be made, and easily, and they do make it easy. Delivery can take a bit, as I live in Clayton Park, but that's part of the greatness. Most business in the downtown area (Spring Garden is downtown to me, and no one will ever change my mind on that!) won't even entertain the idea of delivery to someone in the Clayton Park or Fairview areas, so it's certainly appreciated. An hour is a bit of a wait for delivery, but understandable in this case. Food: 5/5 Delicious! Great selection of tasty foods, and they don't leave me hungry an hour later, nor do they give the stomach ache some chinese food tends to do. I usually go for one of the dinners (for 2, 3 or 4) and get some combination of Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Chow Mein, Jean's Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Beef and Brocoli. All of which are delicious, and are made even more so if you mix them into a bowl together! Their egg rolls are not the absolute best I've ever had, but their spring rolls are definitely tops! Chock a Bloc full, and not at all greasy as some can be. Cost: 4/5 Reasonable, and not at all out of the question. A dinner for 2 (which will either feed a party of 3 for one full meal, or a party of 2 with lots of left overs) will cost about $25, and the dinner for 3 and 4 will move that up to about $40 and $50 respectively. Whether you are going dutch or one paying for all, it's still a reasonable price of about $12 to $15 per person when all is said and done. It will almost always feed 1 or 2 more than is needed, or will leave some tasty leftovers for tomorrow. If you're looking for a dine-in chinese place, this may not be the best choice, as they have limited seating, and it's not very comfy, BUT, if you're looking for some of the tastiest, most affordable, and overall best chinese food delivery experience at home, make Jean's a consideration at least once, and then move it to the regular choice! read more

My co-workers are forever ordering from Jean's and I'd heard many great things about it, so I decided to give it a shot one day. I placed a take-out order for curried chicken. I'm glad that I didn't choose to eat in, as this place is the proverbial hole-in-the-wall. Nevertheless, my order was ready in a short amount of time and the price was fair. The menu described the curried chicken as hot, and I was pleased to discover that it was true to its word. Generous portion (I was stuffed after eating the whole thing), which meant tons of chicken - always a bonus. My only complaint was that it doesn't taste like authentic Chinese...but, in my honest opinion, that's a very difficult thing to acquire in Halifax. Worth trying! read more

Got yelp so I could write this review. We waited an hour to get our food delivered. When it got here the Chicken Chow Mein was a soup. We tried to call back to let them know what was wrong but they're phone system horrible. We called back at least 50 times and no answer. When they finally did answer we were put on hold for 10 minutes. We explained that the Chow Mein was very soupy and the lady on the phone laughed and said that's how they make it. Jean's was the first restaurant I ever ordered take out from when I moved to Halifax almost 4 years ago. Keep in mind that back in those days I lived in a dorm room, was always starving cuz Universty food sucks, and poor. Jean's was the go to place because they delivered and had good combo's for decent prices. The food is good! Except I can't think of a single person I know who likes their egg rolls which are made up of some sort of meat paste. I enjoyed them at first, but now that I live in an apartment and have options other than University food...I realize I was probably just starving. They're really not great and if possible you should probably swap it out for a spring roll or something instead. I love the sweet and sour chicken and I find their food is always fresh! I've never had the problem of the rice being crunchy or anything being cold, even after delivery. And speaking of delivery, it's great that Jean's delivers out of the immediate HRM area! One thing worth mentioning about the combo add ons, however: it gives you more variety, but not more food. For example, I ordered a #1 with an add on of beef with broccoli so they took away some of the sweet & sour chicken and replaced it with beef & broccoli. This isn't a bad thing if you just want more choices but it is if you're hungry and expecting the 'add-ons' to give you more food. Also, please note that this is a Chinese restaurant so you should order Chinese food when you order from there. The Canadian dish options aren't that great. I ordered a poutine from them one night when my boyfriend wanted Chinese and I didn't and it was basically a crap ton of fries with a piece of cheese and a drizzle of gravy in the centre of the mass. I took a picture and to this day we still laugh at this hilarious excuse for a poutine. Order anything other than the Canadian dishes and you likely won't be disappointed. I'm not especially adventurous when it comes to Chinese food. Don't get me wrong, I 'll try anything, but when eating Chinese there's a certain standard meal that I like more than anything else. Ladies and gentlemen, that standard is "Lunch Combo A" at Jean's Chinese Restaurant on Spring Garden Road. Sweet and sour chicken, a huge serving of chicken friend rice, an egg roll and a drink. I'm a sucker for the classics. Jean's has a lot of good things going for it. It's cheap, they deliver and the portions are huge. It's not the nicest looking place, but there is some standard Chinese Restaurant material to be read (Place mats discussing the Year of The Rat, pictures of the Great Wall, etc.). Wait times are generally short and I've never had trouble getting a seat. The staff is friendly and the food is great! So what's not to love? Call me a tree hugging hippy, but is the giant Styrofoam container really necessary for the take away food? Is there no better packaging out there? I would not have a problem paying a little extra for a biodegradable container, but maybe that's just me. Jean, despite the Styrofoam, I love your cheap, filling and tasty food. read more

For a chinese food fix Jean's gets 5 stars. The veggie (or chicken & veggie) spring rolls are delicious. Crispy, crunchy, and stuffed to the gills. The shanghai noodles are so good, a little greasy at times but delicious with lots of meat and vegetables thrown in for good measure. The general tao chicken is a can't miss and as with all of their dishes you get really nice portions at a very nice price. Really good... *ahem* hangover food if that's your thing. read more

The fact that Jeans is conveniently located and is one of the very few,if not the only Chinese place in town that delivers cheap,value for money food, it keeps getting my business when I have a hankering for instant chinese. The food is pretty run of the mill, the combo dishes are the ones which sell most - I suppose mostly because the proportions are good, the price is low, and the do a fantastic delivery service. The food is mediocre but you already semi-guessed that. The fried rice is usually a little too burnt, the beef dishes taste a little too similar but their Cantonese chowmein is to die for. I have had this one particular dish in literally every chinese place in town and Jeans simply is head and shoulders above anyone. Jean's Chinese Restaurant has a near-perfect location: only blocks away from the hub of Dalhousie University, it attracts students and profs alike, as well as the rest of us who drive from over the city to partake of Jean's tasty menu. Jean's boasts that they serve only Grade A meat (which raises the question: who isn't?!). Their menu is varied and expansive which perfectly suits groups. Speaking of groups, you might be better off with take-out or delivery if that's the case - Jean's seating is a mite small, and it doesn't seem as though tables could be combined easily. Jean's offers all day delivery and accepts cash, credit cards, debit on delivery and DalCards (a boon to students but perhaps not so much for their parents?). We've always been very happy with the food from Jean's. They are quick and always happy to discuss variations from the standard dishes. Try Jean's - while it's not the best Chinese restaurant in Halifax (Coast readers may disagree with me), it's tasty with good portions and friendly service. Keeps me coming back! read more

The best cheap fake Chinese food place I've ever been to. Been here on a weekly basis when I was at school at Dalhousie a block away. One star lost because the tables are always greasy and sticky. I don't think the cloths they use to wipe the tables are ever washed; just wet and wipe, then wet and wipe, over and over again. 4 stars for the sheer volume of food though.
